are those the actual extended sliders from that silent realforce keyboard? And if they are, is there any real difference between the extended realfforce sliders and the extended hhkb type s sliders?

They are actual silent sliders from Realforce. The base of the slider is thinner to prevent travel reduction. From what I've been told by many, the Type-S has a slight travel reduction, causing for a difference in tactile feedback and a lighter press as the dome is already slightly depressed in it's upright position.

They were harvested from a Realforce Silent keyboard from another member, and then traded to me :)

I didn't notice any reduction in travel when I swapped the silenced purple sliders into my realforce. Even to compare the non-silenced, goofy left ctrl key to the silenced keys feels the same to me.

Realforce EK45 (Silenced)  |  Realforce 87UW (45g)  |  Realforce 87UWS (Variable)
Filco MJ2 TKL (Cherry Clears)  |  Phantom 87 (78g Gateron Clears)  |  Phantom 86 (67g Zealios)

Exactly. That's what I'm trying to say. The Realforce silent stems are designed to PREVENT reduced key travel, which is why I wanted these rather than a Type-S.

Excite!

Isn't it the purpose of the Type-S sliders as well? IIRC, I saw a picture with a normal slider and a Type-S one side by side and the last did have a thinner base as well.

I just got my Nissho KB106 DE in the mail today from Byker
This thing is an absolute beast. Not only does it have a metal backplate, but it also has an additional steel plate as the bottom of the case.
It came with 35g topre domes however I modded them to 55g instead. Spherical caps and 55g is a match made in topper heaven.

Split spacebar on topre is also just so good ;D

I had to go look at the original eBay posting for this to see if the spacebars were inverted when it was sold or if you did it.

So tonight, I converted my HHKB to Type-V... huehuehue... "Type-V"... so lame...

I modded my HHKB with the Realforce Silent Purple plungers tonight :)

Open sesame...

Time to get you suckers out...
One of the lil' clips flew off and hit me in the face... they ain't going down without a fight

...But in the end... I won...

Relubed the sides of the housing, and also the legs on the plungers with Krytox-mix.

Humpty Dumpty's back together again...

Quick typing video I made... sorry for the really bad quality... I kind of set the camera too close so the sound is kind of way off...

Nice mod! But I guess you were lucky to get the realforce quiet sliders without harvesting them from an actual board. It may feel pretty intense when typing now, especially knowing this is one keyboard of a kind. I must add that it is gorgeous! I love it.  :thumb:

I believe there are a few others who have done this mod (like Bro Caps), but it definitely feels and sounds like a one of a kind <3

The current video I have uploaded is kind of a crappy representation of how it sounds. I'll try to make another video that has a more accurate sound sample soon ~

Well you obviously wouldn't be able to fit all the normal keys on the jp layout.
However they are the same profile so there won't be any weirdness in mismatch.

Alright, alright, alright  Hope you're enjoying them man, you were my inspiration for trying 55g/HHKB so I'm glad I was able to have an impact on your Topre experience.

And I see you took my advice and used an Allen wrench to remove the sliders :D

Now we need a type-s vs HHKB with purple sliders comparison. I must know if they feel different :)

My last concern: how is the durability of Topre? Since it's not easily repairable like Cherry or ALPS boards, there will be a lot of troubles when it fails. Also does the feeling of keys change over time? In my impression rubber domes are not as durable as plastic and metal. I tried my friend's brand new HHKB and it feels great. Will it still feel the same after say 5 or 10 years? (That's kind of what I expected out of a $200+ kb)

There are a few people around who have had topre boards for years and they perform just fine. Normally the only wear is on the keycaps and even then just typically the spacebar.

I can't think of anyone who has had a topre board outright fail.

I'm still waiting to see if someone has domes that have worn out and are cracking. Still haven't seen any reports of it, but I want to know how long it would take.

Good to know. In my impression cheap rubber dome membrane keyboards feel different after some years of use. It is just because they use some cheap, nondurable material for their domes? I hope Topre does not have this problem.

After doing an assload of gaming for 3 years on a Realforce, I firmly believe that they really don't lose feeling. I still have the same domes from that Realforce in my HHKB and 23u.

I have heard some people say that the older domes can feel stiffer, but not sure if this was quantitatively measured, or just by feel. Never heard of any damages though.

It isn't really fair to compare a topre board to cheap rubber dome keyboards.

And I don't think you will find any  keyboard that won't change some after years of use.

And I just got done reading an old thread about topre switches feeling lighter after many years.  :-\

Hell yeah man, I did that before. Purple sliders, 55g domes. Nice job man! Feels great doesn't it?!

Definitely does :)

Youtube videos don't seem to pop up for me (like there's no embed video for me to watch without leaving the page), anybody knows how to fix this?
By the way, nice mod and video Vesper

/heads to lurk again

Thanks, dood!

Embedded Youtube videos don't work for me either, but I do it anyway because I know it works for some people. It actually works on Tapatalk... just not on PC browsers :(

Alright, alright, alright  Hope you're enjoying them man, you were my inspiration for trying 55g/HHKB so I'm glad I was able to have an impact on your Topre experience.

And I see you took my advice and used an Allen wrench to remove the sliders :D

Yeah, dood~ It was a lot of fun <3<3<3

The Allen wrench idea was a good one! Made thing so much easier!

Now we need a type-s vs HHKB with purple sliders comparison. I must know if they feel different :)

Hehehe~ If only I had a Type-S.... HUEHUEHUE.

Don't forget vesper also used lube. :D

You would be correct. Also means the Type-S would have to be 55g too.
