Ok so maybe I understood it wrong, but the kit includes two plates, a brass and an alu one?

Will the board feature a weight? You mention "paired with the brass plate, and weight it would be an absolute stunning case", but it is not obvious if you refer to overall weight, or an internal weight. :)

I've felt a melody keyboard before, hefty for a good price! Looking forward to more details for this one as well!

Voted 60% HHKB layout.

Yes by brass weight, i meant a polished brass weight screwed into the bottom

For this GB we have stuck with acrylic for all boards.
Sorry about that.

Melody96's GB was very smooth.+1 for this!

Would it be possible to receive a raw aluminum case?

We are have had some issues with the software when making the design, but jkaos has estimated that in about 2 weeks the design will be done.
I will make an update when it is done, and hopefully, get samples made asap.
Thanks

Speaking for OP since i'm doing the design and i'm the reason of it being late.
Design is kinda done, i'm waiting for pcb sample with daughterboard  (which was shipped) to test it with the 3d sample (which will be printed soon).
If everything it's ok at that point, renders will be posted and a real sample in alu/acr/brass will be requested.

Great to hear that you guys pour so much time into this. I am really curious about the first pics.
How is the prototyping coming along? Also, mind me asking what about the design proved to be a challenge?

1. making the typing angle 7 degrees while having the acrylic diffuse evenly
2. power outage, causing jkaos to loose quite a bit of work
3. Wei taking a while to respond as jkaos needed the pcb file to even get the design started
4. Work and family being our first priorities

Hope that answers your question

At this point, with the design finished, we are waiting for Wei replies about colors (for eventual rendering) and for other info about options that we can do with him.

Again, we are very close, just need to (1) make a 3d printed prototype. (2) sort out the exact color codes. (3) design the packaging. (4) order a sample. (5) make renders.
This may seem like a long list, but most of it can be done at the same time.

Hope that helps

This is by no means the final product, but its close. We will be needing to make the aluminium top again, do to some sizing changes.

I have made another google form for you to be able to tell me if there is anything you would like to see changed/improved ---> google form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1H0yox12-HrlICf0zmx340sJAia9Vka67BosGdjSaACU)
No response, means no improvements needed.

Thanks, Dion

FUARK those bezels are beautiful. Pretty much perfect except for the spacer for the arrow keys, feels like I'm in the minority in the community that dislikes it though. How much space is there between the pcb and the acrylic bottom? The r1 Chiwi boards had a lot of space between them and because of that the sound was kinda bad.

Damn, the design looks really nice, especially from the side. Can we get a fully built one where the underglow is visible?

Also what was the design decision regarding the usbc port? Normally this one is a little "sunk in" if you know what I mean.
Sadly I am not a fan of the brass plate design. I know this might be controversial but the font would be better in a more simplistic design like the keyboard imo.

Looking forward to the gb.
P.s.: can we get a typing test too to hear what my predecessor has asked about? Reallt curious about that sound :)

Unfortunatley not, hopefully soon though. We are making some minor changes to the bezels, font, and some other sizing changes (there were some issues).
When thats done (and if all goes well), we should be ready for it.

So we are in the process of getting the new font authorised. Jkao has edited the font and made the bezels slightly smaller with very slight curves on all edges and corners.
The second sample along with small samples of each colour will be made pretty soon.

Great to hear you're still on track. Would love to wait for it but due to the lack of pics for decision making and funds for 2 keebs I will need to go with the M65-B Rama.

Will follow the GB though and maybe double tap once it's out. Best of luck to you two.

Again, both Jkao and I have been busy with life. I'm trying my best to sort everything out by the end of the year. The new design has been finished for a while now, however we have just been waiting on Wei (kbdfans) to answer some of our questions. Now that he has done that, all we need to do is to;
1. send the new design to Wei and get it made
2. choose the purple colour (reliant on the manufacturer to quickly get it done)
3. send the keyboard to the custom packaging warehouse and get the packaging made
4. finally if all is well, we can make the GB public
The main things that will take up time is choosing the colour and the shipping time from Wei's warehouse to the packaging warehouse
I hope that helped.

Thanks, Dion

Hi everyone. The design is going to be sent to KBDfans to hopefully make our last sample on Thursday. And Wei has a new purple anodize so I was wondering which purple you like more.

1. New Purple
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/466477018658111488/652350236060286986/unknown.png)(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/466477018658111488/652350510266974254/unknown.png)

Or

2. Old Purple (referenced from Tofu)

If you like the new purple comment 1 or if you like the old purple comment 2. This will help us move forward into the final stages of setting the GB up.

Thanks, Dion.

Just a quick update. We have send the design to wei and he is going to make the final sample. The pcb has been finalised. The packaging is fully planned out (not done yet though). The sample is going to take a while to make unfortunately, as Chinese New Year is coming up and the factories close early. Hopefully wei can finish it before then, but if not we will just have to wait.
I have 2 questions. Do you want a full polycarbonate/acrylic version. And also which purple colour do you like more (shown in previous post).

Thanks, Dion.

So the top part of the case is aluminum, and then the bottom is frosted acrylic? Is that to allow RGB to shine through?

Brass bottom case is going to be around $100 USD extra. I am not 100% sure as it is going to be very very limited, so it might cost more than that.

Hi !

I'm considering my first DIY keyboard and and i'm very interested in the melody65 but I'm a fully noob. I would like an iso french layout, is it possible with this kit ? I saw in this thread that the hotswappable option is not possible for an iso layout, does it means i have to solder the switches on it ? Also about the led's mounting (on switches and underglow) if someone could explain me how to it or indicate a thread that explain it for a very similar product it could be great.

With experience of the first melody productions, how much time between order and delivery should I expect ?

Thanks :)

Wei said is around 5kg the FE (brass bottom, alu top). As far as i remember i quoted 4-4.5kg months ago so the 5kg of wei might be actually true
The bottom is thicc af and the angle of 7 helps to make it heavy

1. Yes, hotswap will not have underglow, but will have per key RGB
2. Non hotswap has underglow, but no per key RGB. You cant add RGB yourself but you can add static LED's, such as white, green, blue etc.

Hope that helps.

2. If your talking about the 2 pin LED's i was talking about earlier, You can find them here (https://kono.store/products/1-8mm-keyboard-leds-100-pack (https://kono.store/products/1-8mm-keyboard-leds-100-pack)), and if you want to know how to do it, i'd recommend you watch this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQj9y16OmlE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQj9y16OmlE)) by TaeKeyboards.

I will get back to you soon with answers about your layout and expected delivery.

Hope that helps   :)

Thanks :)

Din't mind about the layout, I will go with ANSI, way easier to catch keycaps for this layout and I really want the hotswap' feature.

No, not a dumb question at all. There are no renders including each colour available for the case, because the colours are going to be the same ones as KBDfans uses and we do not have the exact colour codes. So if your interested, you could go onto the KBDfans website and look at some of their cases and you will see the colours (Black, e-white, gray, silver and purple).

I hope that helps

Thansk for your answer. I have an other one, is it possible to add underglow to the hotswap (ainsi layout) following this guide : https://gist.github.com/tusing/b9e58480d67a9f3e5932ba27096643c6
This is the last "noobish" question I have i promise.

Most of China is on holiday until the 5th of May. But they have told me that the brass sample's will be ready some time in may. So once they are ready we will be very close to starting a group buy page on their site.

Loving this! Definitely jumping on board after enjoying my 96 so much.

Just a quick question, the brass housing for the case isn't the same shape as the acrylic bottom?
I really did enjoy the multiple layers from the 96, and i'm glad to see it in the acrylic version of the 65! Sadly i'd definitely prefer a full aluminum housing with the same characteristics.

Yeah, so the brass bottom is slightly different in desgin and is more simple. We are considering doing an aluminium bottom option using the same design as the acrylic one.

Yes different bottom.
The brass one is flat with the top, example here: https://i.imgur.com/oA3HCjB.jpg
The Standard one is "angled" on the edges (similar to melody96 edges), example here: https://i.imgur.com/4LYaONu.jpg

The brass pieces have been sent over to the factory to get finished off.

And extra PCB's can be available, we will decide these kinds of details once we are almost ready to create a GB page.

Sorry for the late reply, but at the moment the PCB does not support VIA firmware. There is still a chance we can add it for the final PCB though.

And I'm not sure about the update to the Melody96. Jkao would have to answer that one

This is a separate project with Jkaos and I.
All the designing was done by Jkaos as he knew how the melody96 was designed

Yeah I did the keyboard, basically Dion asked me to reproduce and evolve the melody96 design into a 65% keeb (making the design more advanced while trying to keep it affordable)
Dion is the OP/GB leader, the guy who organized the whole thing. Regarding the producer, it will be KBDfans, not YMDK.

Adding VIA support to existing AVR-based boards is quite straightforward. I'll be contributing VIA support for Melody96 soon.

As for the new PCB, you don't need to do anything special other than support QMK if it's AVR-based.

There will be photos soon, but we've had some issues with processing the brass that have delayed the photos.
And the GB is going to be limited (every colour is going to have a limit)

IMPORTANT
Wei (KBDfans), is getting a quote from a new factory for sandblasting the brass. Because we weren't happy with the brass.
And we are making another PCB sample which will support a 7U layout, and hopefully support VIA too.

Im genuinely sorry about the delay, I would love to get this GB up and running as soon as possible, but we want to make sure everything is perfect before the final production.

We will be sending it to Taeha soon, we just need to verify that everything is perfect. After we send the sample, we would need to figure out when Taeha would be free to stream the build and as soon as we know the date, I will notify everyone.

I hope that clarifies it

Yes the group buy will be a little after taehas stream.
As for the estimated date, I don't really want to promise anything, since as you've already seen, many things can pop up to delay it. And since we also don't know when Taeha will receive it due to COVID-19 affecting delivery times.
Just keep an eye out for any updates. I will update everyone as soon as I have accurate dates.

Thanks

Hi I am fully aware that underglow is only possible for solder version but just wondering whether or not if it would be possible to solder hotswap sockets by myself and turn it into a hotswap pcb but with RGB?

Just realised that this was a thing. Was considering M96, but this... this is so much better. In ISO, it's close to being perfect, by 'perfect' meaning that it would be available in rose gold as well. :) But definitely taking it in any colour.

So, don't know if I read this wrong;
But only the soldered version will be able to have the underglow?
If so, will the hot-swap version w/bras bottom cost approximately the same?
Anyways, looks great and hopefully I'll get my hands on it!

Please read, as there are some new details.

Some specifics are still not decided - The exact GB date, the sixth colour, the exact price, and whether we will do a full polycarb or full acrylic version.

I hope you guys enjoyed the stream! If you missed out, you can still watch it here -> https://www.twitch.tv/videos/763498687

We Will be looking into decreasing the height of the case, after receiving Taeha's feedback.

Whenever there are new updates, I will update everyone on this thread.

If you have anymore feedback, I would love to hear it!

Thanks!

We are going to get more for the GB, probably around 300 pieces in total for the standard kit (no limits for individual colours).

As for the foam, I'm 95% sure we will include the foam in all kits, but we may not be able to for the ISO/universal plate.

These are the details we will be finalising before the GB goes public, so I will update everyone when we have all the details.

No there arent any O-rings on this board.
And there arent any between the plate either, so it will be a firm typing experience if you choose the brass plate.

Hope that helps :)

Gotcha.
Will the plates be available in different colors? Also, the brass will be brushed and not polished like in the main picture, right?

Unfortunately I don't think we will do a 'Hot Pink' as we are trying to keep the colour options low.

We will be doing; red, navy blue, dark purple, e-white, dark gray, silver, black, and the option for a full polycarbonate/acrylic case (you will be able to choose whether you want acrylic or polycarb).

Bruh, I'm kinda glad this took so much time. Because I just found about it!!!! AND IT LOOKS LIT!!

Pun intended because I'd love a full polycarb case for that light to shine! More RGB more fps, everyone knows that.

Two questions of a newbie. Whats the difference between polycarb and acrylic? And with the underglow pcb can you still have per key led?

Definetly looking forward to this and to know the price of the options.

polycarb is more expensive and sounds better. i heard it doesn't diffuse rgb as good but idrk. also the pcb won't support both so you'll have to pick soldered with underglow or hot swap with per key

Hmmmm... Choices choices...
This board looses half the charm without the underglow with the clear bottom to me, so I'll probably go for that. Plus if I get the clear plate light will shine back up provably.

PC will be not-frosty but is more like whitey, maybe an image would make sense more than my words. I believe it will show rgb nicely, and since we believe PC is superior to Acrylic, we will use PC on the rgb option (pic below is not a melody)

Can you already tell by how much lower the case will be (i.e. actual mm)? Love the board - I'll go with the blue color!

It says "Acrylic/Aluminium Bottom Piece", as far as I understand it, you can get it as fully aluminum, no acryl/PC? And have we heard anything new about the height?

Love the look of the product, great job!

There is no longer acrylic bottom, we will use PC instead of acrylic which we find superior, we will update the post.
You can get full alu, full PC, and a mix of them (alu top, pc bottom) as standard kits

Don't know yet,but it will be most likely 2-3mm i think. Considering that now, with the bumpers installed, should be around 25mm, so considering the edit, it will still be pretty high.
I definetely suggest to use it with a wrist rest (well i suggest to use every keyboard with a wrist rest tbh)

So, I have a potentially stupid question to ask here: If I pre-order this kit, when should we expect these to be shipped? Like within a couple weeks? Or is this wayyyyyyyyy later next year like I've seen with other neat keyboard kits?

Should be expected to ship early next year.
We don't have good estimates at the moment, but it should be around January-Febuary ,considering that you will have up to a month to purchase a case (most likely mid-late febuary, but it could be sooner/later)

Wei will give a better estimation later, there will be the chinese new year aruond febrary so i guess it's like 5 months or so, so more like March.

Has the actual revised height of the front end been given yet? I know it's 2-3mm lower now but I can't find the original dimensions so I don't know what that equates to.

The current height of the case is slightly under 25mm, so after the height reduction, it should be around 21.5-23mm

Around 21-22, also that's not a straight wall, it is 14mm of vertical wall and later is starts the fjell-like edge.

probably dumb question, but will the hotswap version plate work for the standard ANSI layout with universal PCB?

Is the universal pcb the standard kbd67 pcb or the one with the flex cuts?

For anyone wondering I couldn't add the foam and the keyboard at the same time.  If I picked the board and the foam the only thing in the cart was the foam, had to go back and actually add the keyboard again with no foam.

yep, but you will have some extra 2mm holes for the standoffs (there are to clip the hotswap pcb), photos here: https://imgur.com/a/6l1P6Ws

It's a custom one that is a re-iteration from the last kbd67, so we don't know yet to be honest

I tried to add the Navy Top, PC bottom, Universal Soldered + Brass, plate foam. When I did Add to Cart the only thing there was the foam. I went back and added the board with no foam and the cart was then correct with the board and then a separate listing for the foam. I tried like 3 times that’s the only way I could get the board and foam in there.

It was the plate foam. I also was in right at 10 so not sure if that had anything to do with it. At any rate I paid around 290 and it has the keyboard and the foam listed in my order so I’m good

Any chance for an "official" wrist rest? KBDFans has done that for a few other releases previously.

Sorry man, we had to limit this a lot. I'm sorry that someone who followed the IC for the whole time didn't got it, but there are many people asking this.

is there a rendering or picture for the dark grey? Also, is the silver polished, brushed, matte, or does it just have speckles in the paint?
I am stuck between these 2 colors.... thanks!  ;D

Sorry they forgot the render.
Regarding silver, it's the typical anodization silver. I would personally go for dark grey, more matches with keycaps.
Probably you can find other boards made in the past with silver and dark gray on kbdfans store. It will not be exactly this, but this is a comparison on the tofu https://i.imgur.com/JS7FO48.png

I just ran into this and found that if you have multiple tabs open, this happens. For me, it was adding multiples of everything because I had added it to a cart in one tab and then in the other tab, I removed them but still must see some session data from other. I also saw the issue of just the foam added. So, to resolve this what I did was close all other tabs, refresh the cart, delete everything and then hit the Continue Browsing here link.

Any chance of a FE style alu bottom? I prefer the flush look, but I grabbed a full polycarb if not. Seems like the type of board that would be interesting as polycarb.

Multiple people asked this, but it won't be available for this GB.
If this would go very well, we might consider but it will be years from now  :D
