UPDATE MAY 14TH 2021

THE PROTOTYPE

268362-12

After feedback from the IC, we made a few design changes for the next prototype (Which has been ordered!)

Multiple small details were changed in the second version, the biggest of which being the removal of the feet.

Some of you might be worried that the keyboard will tilt/wobble when typing.

This is NOT the case - for the keyboard to wobble you would have to press way harder than you ever would in a real-world scenario.

Other changes include multiple small changes - primarily larger cutouts to make the tolerances more forgiving.

NEW DISCORD SERVER

Join here! https://discord.gg/74G844zanU

If you want to get to know the BEAK 6.5 better, we highly encourage you to check out our new Discord server!

IN OTHER NEWS

We are working on getting an estimate for the BEAK 6.5 pricing.

We are also talking with multiple vendors around the world.

And last but not least, we would like to thank you all for the support, it has been amazing!

Looks really good! Deffinately in. Though I really wish for it to have an extra column to the right. Other then it's amazing, really like it! Cheers for the months to come.

+1 for the prototype, looks very unique compared to the 65% gasket mounts that have flooded everything.

If it comes with ISO it's probably instabuy. This, and Rotwitt's... DK design sure is leaving a mark.

I am not sure this board is quite for me just yet.
But I appreciate seeing something new and different.

The only things I would point out:

-The feets. I understand they are necessary, but they do feel like an afterthought and aren't quite as integrated into the design as I would like.
-I am not quite sure it is a 65%, that might require a small column somewhere to add some extra keys. But  I am not sure how that would be possible without changing the design.

You should consider adding a "notes/comments" section to the IC

I think it would be a missed opportunity not to have the eye of Horus at the top of the pyramid.

That is certainly a good idea - might do something like it in a future project. Although for this project I am going for more of a minimalist/industrial design.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I feel like having a cable come out vertically from the top of the pyramid might ruin the aesthetic of the board. Obviously a usb port on either the left or the right isn't possible. Would bluetooth be a possible option?

Blacksimon, we know this is you, nice try...

Jokes aside, it actually looks interesting. Kind of has a modern vibe to it.

Some thoughts:
Not a fan of how the ledge of the pyramid that faces you has been flattened, feels/looks unexpected.
I think it would look much better if the knob and entire pyramid was brass, not sure why the bottom is brass but the top part of it matches the case.

For the first run, it will probably not be Bluetooth compatible.

I think it would look much better if the knob and entire pyramid was brass, not sure why the bottom is brass but the top part of it matches the case.

The reason for it being flat is due to the limitations of the manufacturer.

As for the knob there is a poll in the IC form which is there to gather interest in a brass knob.

The reason for the beak being brass on the bottom, and another color on top is due to how the case is assembled.
In the image below you can see that the top part of the BEAK is aluminum, and the part you are referring to is in the same block of aluminum - therefore it is not possible to match the colors.

Picture:

Although a possible fix would be detaching the part, and having it machined in brass, and screwing it into the side.

Filled out the form! I must say this is pretty cool looking. As another user above posted, a part of me would love to see some additional keys on the right side. I feel like an additional column would just make this thing bigger than a TKL so maybe a knob that spans 2 rows vs 3, and then have a triple key section for function/toggles or page up and down. Just a thought but I like how it looks now. Great work and I do appreciate having prototypes already. GL!

-I am currently experimenting with the feet, it seems that they may not be necessary at all!
-As for the layout, I am not sure how else to categorize this.

I'm sure you have your own reasons for the weight/foot stand design,
But it's so obviously gonna be a dealbreaker for many,
I think you're just making things harder for yourself.
Best of luck though. I love how you position the knob. Might reconsider this later.

I am aware that the design may deter some people from buying, and it would maybe be easier to make a "normal" design.
Although I have also heard from a lot of people that they love it because of the bold design.

If people want a "basic" looking board, they don't need to look to far because there are a dozen new rectangle "regular" looking keyboards out every other month.
The design is different and bold, THAT is why people are gonna buy it, and thats why I personally love it. (hopefully I can spare the money when this goes into gb)

EDIT:
Also, are there going to be vendors for different regions?

I am currently talking with multiple vendors, there is a chance that there will be an Eu vendor, a US vendor, and possible others.
But i cannot confirm any vendors at this time.

This is BADASS! My one suggestion is making the feet little triangles to match the weight? I think that would look awesome.

Thank you for the interest.
After some testing we found out that the feet are not necessary at all, since brass weight is heavy enough so that it won’t fall.

Very nice concept. A pity that doesn't have ISO

The final version will include ISO support!

what if one hand is leaning on the keyboard on one side and weighing one side down in some manner, would it fall over in that case?

For the board to fall over, you would have to try and make it do so.
The only way for it to fall over, is if you press a lot harder than you would ever do in any real scenario.

Love this design. Has all the things that I would like in a board especially if it comes with ISO support.
I might be going against the grain here but per key RGB or at the least, backlit would be nice. Looking forward to see how this progresses especially if you can source decent international vendors (UK my preference is Prototypist). GLWIC

This rotary dial trend is going out of bounds. From one rotary to two rotary boards and now into making 65s effectively TKL sized with less keys.

Not for me but it's certainly something new for the community.

Pretty sure this is a sign that people are getting sick of all 65% looking the same. Knob meta is real and i'm sure people will tire of this soon as well.

To me the design is so wild that it works. Intentionally different & refreshing. Not for me as well but supportive of those who love it.

An HHKB layout for that 60% section would be beyond dope.

Digging the design, though I feel like you missed the opportunity to present this as origami themed.

An LED ring around the knob that turns with you and fades out after a few seconds would be cool.

I wish it had at least white underkey lighting. And I sort of wish it was an integrated spacemouse which would make the knob more useful although maybe uglier.
