[strike]Plus $34.80 shipping.[/strike] Never mind, it's set with a default shipping location of Canada. Still, the switches alone would cost close to $100 from Mouser.

For the record, some of them might be willing to ship if you ask and then make arrangements for the extra cost. I would, but I never set that because I just guesstimate what it would generally cost me to ship it to the other side of the country (where I seem to only ship things to) and put that as my shipping. I don't have a scale and auto-shipping-label-priniting ability, and I bet neither do alot of other sellers. So I have no way of saying that I would do it upfront, so I don't. I've only been asked once, and that person didn't win whatever it was.

The key-caps on this board are NOT double-shots.  I'm pretty sure they are just pad printed.

@DRG Yes, they will fit on Filco and other Cherry MX switch boards

@RickyJ All the boards this seller currently has a Cherry Clears.  I confirmed this with the seller.

My Review
« Reply #7 on: Mon, 25 April 2011, 23:48:37 »
WARNING: All of the boards from this seller has been painted.  The top half of the case has been painted.  I bought one from him and discovered this when it arrived.  I'm assuming whoever painted them disassembled them first; as there is no paint on the keys, track-pad, or bottom half of the case.  The paint is also a little gritty.  Overall the paint job is pretty good.

I e-mailed the seller (Rawko) and ask him about it.  He checked and all the Cherry G80's he sales have been painted.  All of the Cherry G80's he sales also currently use Cherry MX Clear switches.

Other info:
1.  The board does have NKRO.  You can see a diode under each key.
2.  The switches are PCB mounted.
3.  Some of the switches on my board were a little more worn than others (less tactile).  They are used boards so wear varies.
4.  The credit-card reader is interesting to play with for a while.  It outputs the credit card info as key presses.  So just open up a text editor and swipe away.
5.  The track pad is fairly decent.  It's not the best I've used, but not the worst.
6.  The key-caps seem to be laser printed.  They are NOT double-shots.

US Ebay link for those interested: Cherry G80-8113LRCUS

Picture of the paint job.  Around the indicator lights is the best place to tell they have been painted.  Whoever painted them masked the Cherry logo and lights off first.

I wasn't expecting double shots at all, the part number indicates laser but I don't care on a parts board.  I plan on using it for a bit, see if I can go back to a non-clicky board.  Interesting to hear about your experiences!

yea, for the price I'm not disappointed.  I wanted to try out clears and the credit card reader.  Since the switches are PCB mounted, I also plan to use the board to test out other switch types (Reds, Ergo-Clears).  I also bought a few other items from Rawko and he combined the shipping.  I just thought I would let everyone know about the board being painted in case anyone cared before they bought it.

They may just need to be cleaned out. I bought a G80-8113, and after cleaning and greasing the switches they're all quite nice. Equipment in a business simply doesn't get cared for the way personal property does.

I've only spent a few hours with mine, but they all seem to be alright so far.  I'm still getting used to the clears though, my first Cherry switch board coming from Alps.  I am finding that I instantly don't bottom out the keys like I would on my Alps board, which is quite a nice change.  I'm quite liking these so far!

I wasn't expecting them, the Cherry part number for the board didn't indicate NKRO at all.  The diodes look like they'd just pop out of the switch bodies when they're desoldered.  Alternatively, since they're PCB mounted, you could just pop the switch tops off and take the stems....half the amount of desoldering!

If by CA you mean California and not Canada, you can use the US Ebay link.  The seller also allows you to make an offer.  You can offer less than $20 as most of us have.

The software ("Cherry Tools") ist the same for almost all Cherry keyboards with a programming function, and for most of them does not distinguish between the last two digits. When programming, you can choose your keyboard model from a list specifying for example "G80-81xx".

So just have a look at another keyboard on the Cherry website, for example G80-8116.

I have the software installed on my computer, never had any problems with it and it works fine - my OS is Windows XP, though ;-)

Ah, yes that worked. Searched for another version of the G80-8113 and found the Cherry tools. Latest version is 5.8 and supports all versions of Windows from 2000 onward. English language here, also have French and German. Play time, poeple!

I'm not particularly worried about the software doing anything nasty, either. I read the posts from the other guy when he had the trouble, sounded pretty ridiculous to blame the problem he had on Cherry Tools.

Good buy at this price.

Hmm. I got turned down for $5 each.

They are trying to charge me more liek $24 for shipping for the two boards though, even though I live an hour or two away. So that seems really fishy to me; especially if you got shipping for all of it to be $15.

Well I just ordered one of these yesterday, should hopefully arrive by the end of the week and I already own a TG3 so I can give impressions then if you can wait. If I had to guess though, just from pics, I get the impression that this is more a "real" keyboard whereas the TG3 feels like some kinda terminal device that someone like a cop or ambulance worker would use out in the field or something. On the otherhand, one gripe I know I'll already have about the G80 board is the size, it looks huge.

And yes, before anyone asks, I did have to pay that ridiculous shipping fee for outside CONUS ($34) but I made a $7.50 offer for one so at least there's that. I figured it's probably still a cheaper way for me to get a MX Clear board since looks like they don't really make those anymore besides Deck Legends but those seem to run $170+ new.

I made an offer for 2 boards for $35 and he accepted. Hopefully one of the two comes in good shape. Although I really want them for parts. I would love to throw these clears into a compact board.

Is there a decent space saving pcb mount cherry board that I could use for this mod? The only board that I can think of is the PLU-87.

These are in much better condition than I expected. The switches don't really seem worn, and the keycaps even look pristine. The paint job is good.

I can see this being a very nice beginner's mechanical keyboard, especially for MMO players. full NKRO plus a crapton of extra keys that could be programmed (with stuff like auto hotkey, I would think) to do anything including macros. There are more extra keys on this thing than there are macro keys on a blackwidow.

Call me a pansy but I'm afraid to screw around with the switches in a plate mounted board. I couldn't look at myself in the mirror after ruining a filco. I love my Filco with cherry browns.

I just asked Obook for a quote for a PLU ML-87.

It looks like my boards have shipped out. Hopefully I'll have them soon.

Just got mine in. So my impressions are that it's pretty heavy, though I kinda guessed it would be from looking at force graphs. I'm surprised how subtle the tactile point is, it almost feels linear. I think I heard the tactile point in clears is more similar to browns than they are to blues so does a mx brown feel like a very light clear?

Straight hammering on the keys I have to focus to feel the bump, but all of my keys follow the force graph closely.  The post-bump ramp keeps me from bottoming out the keys, so I'm always riding the bump and actuation point at my normal speed.  Even when tapping on the same key over and over, I don't find myself going very far up the ramp.  If you don't feel it when pressing the key normally, I think there's something wrong (crud in switches perhaps).

Definitely. My G80-8113 had all sorts of crud in the switches. After opening, cleaning and re-greasing them they feel smooth and tactile. One great way to tell if there is crud is if all the keys feel different. Some will be dirtier then others, some have lint in them making them feel soft or fuzzy and other may have dirt in them for a gritty feeling.

Again it's not the lack of a bump I'm commenting on guys, it's how subtle it is compared to mx blues, the same way ppl compare the bump in browns to blues. Or difference I feel in white alps to black alps, even though they're both tactile.

For the record, this is (left to right) about as big as a standard keyboard. In my keyboard tray, it comes to about the same spot on my mousepad as anything else would. I'm not sure why that's such a big deal. It's also got NKRO, unlike probably alot of the things you'd be putting the switches into.

As far as the trackpad/whatever thing, I just didn't plug it in. I hate those things. Especially if it's gonna be that much in the way of the arrow keys.

Still the cheapest source of clear switch stems for mods!  I really like mine as it is, but I've got a Leopold brown coming soon that is begging for clear stems.  Makes me wish I bought two!

Good to see so many people jumping on this as well.  Helps the guy out, despite the lowballing, and we get mod-fodder!

Is the Leopold plate-mounted?  If so you will have a lot of de-soldering and soldering to do.  I might do that to a Filco to mod it to ergo clear.

He says that it does (well, says that they are "white sliders with black surrounding" or something equally just descriptive), but the picture he has as proof is actually a picture of an example from the previous board. I sent him a question already asking him to do one of this board.

I wanna see if this board is NKRO as well.
