With Linjär in progress and soon concluding, I want to move on to my next project - a N9-U9 GMK set! This is heavily inspired by Carbon Boneyard, and I have made sure T0mb3ry was OK with it.

Surprisingly enough some people still respect others' efforts and rather try and ask if they mind them using a colour scheme that's similar/the same as something done previously, in order to foster a nice environment between everyone involved. Imagine not asking for permission and proceeding to be fully discredited by 80%+ of the community instead of having the foresight to just be respectful in the first place.
I wonder which one of the two outcomes is more desirable; that said and on topic, good luck with the set Emir! I was quite fond of the Boneyard look for Carbon but I went with Ivory instead, now I can have both when you choose to run this. Good job with the execution!

Not here to express interest but I like to look over kits for errors and this one has a <>| key next to left shift, but that's not the UK key which is another \|. Also the ' on '@ is upsidedown - I would imagine GMK would correct this, but if somewhere uses that legend and they have a mold maybe they wouldn't... The ISO-key is on purpose, the other one is one of many flaws in the render. :) Don't worry, I will get it right - thanks for pointing out the mistakes!

It's not done simply because the interest isn't there. As a whole the community doesn't buy icon bottom row or nav clusters. If you have icon mods the general consensus is text bottom row/nav.

Ha! I did the same thing! I think N9/L9 might read better than N9/U9
N9 is great. It works better than CR on most black cases b/c CR is darker than most anodized black aluminum and CR is also has quite a bit more natural shine to it.

You can definitely tell the difference between the L9 and CP legends on the mods and alphas in the photo. I kinda dig the L9 legends as opposed to the U9.

But seriously, I do understand that it's not the most popular choice for GMK sets but they aren't really offered that often either. And when they are they can end up being very pricey because they are in a side kit (GMK Carbon for example), which lowers interest even more. There's healthy support for icon mods in other profiles but it never really took off for GMK sets. But, it never hurts to ask.

As for color, I don't think N9 is too close to black. If you compare GMK Terminal next to WoB there is a pretty big difference (and why I'm not a big fan of terminal despite black / green being my two of my favorite colors together)

Well, if people just want ISO and are used to legends being wrong, then ISO-US is the cheapest option (2 keys only). ISO UK is 6 keys.

Legends are all wrong anyway.
Just add 4 keys:
- 1.25 shift and 1u R4 key (<>)
- 1u R3 key (# key)
- Iso Enter

My friends tell me, a 1u key is about 1 euro, so these 6 extra keys will add maybe 10 euro to the basekit pricing. I will look at quotes before deciding, but I guess it's ISO-UK or nothing for the majority of you, huh.

Yes, I agree. I rather remove ISO than raise the price for like 5% of the purchase base. In this case, to me it feels better to offer the necessary 4 ISO-keys (Enter, short lshift, and the 2 iso keys) in a real layout than half. In that case, ISO-US would be the best option - even if many don't use it in real life by own choice, it will still make the most sense if you just want to put it on an ISO board. R4 Pipe and R3 #~ are from ISO-UK, so I would change these to ISO-US ones to complete the layout. If all other legends are wrong for ISO-UK anyway, then I personally feel ISO-US makes more sense as in the legends across the board will be correct and aligned with each other.

Aesthetically more pleasing than having half a layout of something else IMO, and since this is basically the only way to have a correct layout with as few keys as possible, it's OK IMO.

Mykeyboard.eu is confirmed, pricing will be this (or similar!):
MOQ 150: 129 Euro
MOQ 250: 119 Euro
MOQ 500: 109 Euro
109 Euro for this base kit is very reasonable and good, IMO. At MOQ 150, it's a bit more expensive than I hoped - but nothing is final yet and I will try to get it lower. If I am being realistic, I do really believe at least MOQ 250 should be very possible, 119 euro is OK in my opinion (comparing to other GMK sets out there with similar compat).
I am also in talks with Wei from KBDFans, but it's a bit difficult due to high chinese tariffs (explains why zFrontier is always more expensive...) and some US proxies too.
I will keep everyone up to date!

But comparing this render (which I love), to the original base set render, I’m a little concerned there might not be enough contrast between the U9 legends and the background N9. This newest render looks great in terms of legibility. But the base set render, as well as the photo with the gmk sample caps makes me worry that U9 won’t stand out as well as it does in this render. To my eyes, the legends here look closer to L9 (based on the GMK stock colors photo). I haven’t seen either of these colors in person, so I’m relying on those more experienced here to weigh in.

With that said, I have asked GMK for an updated quote with accents, and asked oblotzky to render it for me. :) Thank you for the feedback! Please note that this will raise the price, however.

I think it offers flavor to the set personally, and I already voiced earlier in the thread that I do agree that any other beige mods could pass as accents... I think it might entice more people to buy it, while 3ish USD won't turn off the ones already interested - fair trade-off, no?
In any case, not everyone will be happy regardless. Let's run with the accents for now - we still have time until GB to remove em if so, or even add more - so please keep discussion open. I am open to all feedback.

Might be a bit late here, BUT... please don't remove ISO. I think retaining the four keys of USO-US support should be sufficient to satisfy the budgetary needs of the kit and keeping the maximum appeal for as many layouts as possible. Otherwise, we could start talking about making an even smaller core kit and then several extra "mod kits" - one for TKL, one for 75%, one for 65% (A), one for 65% (B), etcetera.
YMMV.

Well, if people just want ISO and are used to legends being wrong, then ISO-US is the cheapest option (2 keys only). ISO UK is 6 keys.

Just add 4 keys:
- 1.25 shift and 1u R4 key (<>)
- 1u R3 key (# key)
- Iso Enter
I agree with this, except the R3 key should be \ |. No point in having a single key coming in from the UK layout.

This was, until the removal, a guaranteed purchase for me.
Adding minimal compatibility is frankly worse than not adding it at all (obviously my opinion).
Totally understand that this is your call, but I find this gradual eradication of a previously standard GMK offering to be a terrible community decision.
If it's not feasible to add into the base kit, due to community pressure, at least offer it as a separate kit for those that would like to support it.
The fact that this is made available in the EU makes it far more likely to reach MOQ than of it were sold via a US store alone.

I understand not including ISO-UK will make me lose out on a few purchases, similarly not offering ortho support does the same - I understand this. :( I would like to please everyone, but on a whole, this is the best solution in my opinion and the basekit will stay as is for this run.

I don't think N9 is going to give the same effect as what the renders show. The renders show a gray closer to GD (same as Space Cadet gray). N9 is just going to look black. Agree N9 will look much darker than the renders. The renders seem closer to Oblivion mod color which I believe is color matched to GQM not GD.
I'd be really excited if I can mix this set with Oblivion. GQM monotone and Oblivion with Icon mod will be possible.
EDIT: I believe SA Carbon mods are GQM as well. Inline with the OP's inspiration.

It's been around for decades but I still don't get the rationale. This set isn't for me since it lacks nordic support and AltGr, I was just curious since it seems a recurring theme.
I'm a bit peculiar when it comes to keycaps... I'd rather have no legend or something completely different than something that in my mind is "wrong". If it said "blah" instead of a down arrow I'd be more interested lol. Same with Alt and AltGr, but even more irritating since it's so close to being right. Could never use Alt where AltGr is supposed to be. I touch type and everything but keycaps legends are important for me, for purely aesthetic reasons.
What this set does better than most though is using only symbols on Backspace, Tab, Enter and Shift. And ÷ instead of / on the numpad. That in my mind is the "correct" way.

N9 is one of those colors that will look different depending on lighting, maybe more so than most. There is no way to depict it perfectly, but I belive Oblotzky has rendered it well - he has access to it in real life as well. In poor lighting, it will look almost dark with no other pure black sources around, in other environments with good lighting, it'll look a lot brighter.
Here's a cap in good lighting shopped onto the basekit render, it's not far off.

However, as these are stock GMK colors, there are many sets utilizing both colors - please look up references for these colors before deciding to purchase if you are not sure what they look like in real environmkents. I would hate to have someone disappointed, especially when there are so many resources for these. :'(

Personally I find N9 to be grey, maybe a bit darker than the render but clearly grey. Especially when compared to GMK black
Most of us have N9 caps somewhere. Dolch mods, Terminal, Violet Tendencies, etc.
Take a look. IMO, N9 is nice, but GQM is significantly better.

GQM raises MOQ to 250 (currently 150 since all stock colors). Also might as well have bought Carbon Boneyard at that point.

Using custom colors does not raise price, just MOQ. To my understanding, using more colors overall will increase the pricing, but doesn't matter if they're custom or stock.

I think in general, Americans prefer text + icons, while Europeans tend to like Icons more. Because the larger userbase is in the US, most sets tend to be icon + text. Text only is the least popular one, so not many try to go that route.
I could be wrong, but if I am right, I hope Americans start to like how elegant and clean icon mods looks - and we start seeing a icon mod dominated market. :D

With that said, with RAMA I believe we have came up with a solution that even I would consider using! The whole idea is to have it be as close to N9 and U9 as possible, so we will be using Brass with their Moon PVD, with a cream enamel fill so that it doesn't stick out too much from the rest of the set.

I like this design a lot more. The infill looks a bit funky in renders and the reflections play with the appearance, but I have a feeling it will look SICK in real life! :) I will be getting more renders, too - on keyboards - so let's wait for those!

The beauty of designing is making a "simple" set look sophisticated, I think Nine does that. Making a very muted and laid back set attractive is what makes me love classics such as Skidata, WoB, BoW, 9009 Etc - I hope Nines will be up there one day. :)

Basically, the RAMA team asked me what to engrave the cap with, and I really had no idea as I don't usually like branding. So out of nowhere, randomly as a joke I suggested this:

This is a lot cooler than the '9' artisan - that one I could really only see being used in place of the 9 key itself. This looks a lot nicer as an artisan IMO.

I can already tell that this is definitely going to be one of the best GMK sets of this year.
Also I'm pretty happy this is going to be available on KBDfans since shipping from any country that's not China to my country is pretty expensive.
Looking forward to buy the base set if the final price tag is 100 US or anything close to that. :thumb:

congratulations for the project, you have decided not to follow the current trend of dividing the core kit into multi kits, you have managed to keep a really competitive price considering also the accents with inverted colorway.

Not sure why some are saying the price is high? $130 for US/Asia/Intl, 120 Euro for EU is right in line for what I was expecting for an all in one lower MOQ GB like this. I think some may see the smaller number for EU customers & not realize with exchange rate the set cost the same for everybody give or take a couple cents. For me at $130, plus probably another $10 for shipping, I'm definitely still in for this set & pretty happy with the price TBH. Think about it even with the buying power of of MD the now continuously stocked GMK WoB is going for $100, so I'd imagine MD is paying $70 to $80 per set themselves. $130 for a decently comprehensive set that only needs 150 orders to run seems fair enough to me.
The only thing I take a little issue with is that GMK is not offering any price breaks at all for this GB. I can understand not doing a price break structure like in a Zambumon or Mito GB, but damn give us a price break at 300 if it doubles MOQ & maybe another at 500 if it does real well. I could be wrong, but using standard GMK colors/fonts & having just a single all one set should make the manufacturing cost at least a little cheaper for GMK vs sets with custom matched colors, multiple kits, dual legends on the alphas, etc. Admittedly, I'm not sure how much of the costs for stuff like that get put on the designer/GB runner & how much of it GMK absorbs.
Anyways getting excited for this set now that is for sure going live. Great work on this set Emir & I look forward to getting one of these bad boys in my collection (hopefully one of those Rama caps too! :p)! So much better than WoB in my IMO! :thumb:

Either way I'm glad this set isn't spinning the numpad and ISO keys off seperately, because GMK child kits are punishingly expensive.

Regarding price breaks, GMK offers quotes at 150, 250 and 500 MOQ for every set using stock colors (to my knowledge). As far as I know, custom colors don't cost more than stock colors - they just raise MOQ. However, adding colors increases the cost - so a 3 color set will cost more than a 2 colored set (to my understanding). Regarding sublegends etc, I am not sure about that as my set doesn't offer any, but if GMK got molds for it, I don't think it increases cost significantly.
The reason many sets don't offer price breaks is because vendors, aside from Massdrop, don't have an automated way to refund each price break. This means there's logistical cost for vendors to refund orders, and if it's over 500 then that takes quite some times to manually refund each order, which means labour cost. For a set with very low margins, introducing price breaks might actually make the GB lose money when adding all the logistical cost of manually refunding. I hope that clears things up a bit!
For Nines it was a concious decision not to introduce price breaks, I hope you understand. :(

If you really would not want to order from Kono, you always have KBDfans to fall back to, their international shipping is smooth regardless of where in the world you are (and well priced). It might be a bit less convenient than a local proxy (which is why we have Kono), but it's better than missing out. Please consider talking to kono, or worst case use KBDfans. <3

Fast shipping is included in the price, so it is still 129 but due to how the vendor portal works it had to be included in the price.
