well, i guess we'll never find out about that new board series

It's so secret and exclusive, the keyboard designer never shared it with anyone.

People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Gundam said in September they’d be a new board, but nothing came from it. Post is somewhere in this thread :))

Still blows my mind that half-plates never took off in the western community, they're so good. Westerners just like their solid blocks of metal I guess.

More "lively" and interesting than something rock-solid like brass or steel. More ergonomic IMO, less harsh on your fingers if you use lighter springs. I think my personal favorite part is feeling a keypress on an alpha on one end on the keycap of an alpha on the other end (rest your finger on the D key, press the K key and see how much you can feel the keypress vibrations from the D key). Half-plate is more bouncy than even a full plate with a more flexible material like polycarbonate.

Keyboards are far more interesting to me when they're less rigid.

I agree, i like more flex, wish more boards had half plates or polycarb plates. Probably why i enjoy typing with G80 3000 cases and HHKB a lot.

I realise this is old but Vegs necro'd so I thought I'd add my tuppence.

The Cheat I bought has an alu half plate and I absolutely love how it feels, it's just a shame I still haven't managed to flash the PCB so I can't actually use it.  :-[  It's definitely waaaay flexier than  both of the poly plated boards I have. Seems like the OTD PCB is particularly thin as well which I guess is a significant factor.

One day I'll get this thing up and running properly. It really is super nice feeling.

356 series plates should be the same thickness as lal cherry plates, 1.5mm. I think the flexy feeling comes from the shape of the plate.

Yeah the plate is the same thickness but the PCB is thin and also is a particular material - at least for my Cheat and 456 - which I presume have an affect on flex a fair bit. Kack has delved into this a lot on discord but I forget the exact details.

Yup, OTD PCBs are indeed (intentionally) thinner than most of the modern customs I've seen.

If you have an Atmel ISP you should be able to flash it I think. I used an Atmel ICE 2 for my mini, but there are lots of alternative models.

It's my impression that a bunch of the later OTD boards have very similar firmware, but I'm not sure about the Cheat. Might be the case, if you need hexes. The 456GT, DGE, Corsa, and maybe some of the others all share firmware I believe and I wouldn't be surprised if the Cheat was also compatible, but idk what controller it uses.

Cheat uses some wacky version of AIKON. I remember yuktsi being fairly well versed in it, throw him a message.

Yeah it uses Aikon. Yuktsi did actually offer to sort it for me but I didn't take him up on it. I had a lot of help from MxBlue as well but to no avail. Just got too frustrated with it so it's gone back in the box until I feel zen enough to tackle it again. I think it's having to use a VM that's making it more difficult than it needs to be.

It's not normal AIKON, let me see if I can find the translated version of the flashing guide for you. Have on for a few days.
