Sockets for Kailh Choc V2 switches?
« on: Thu, 07 September 2023, 10:34:17 »
Hi,

Do any of you experts know of any sockets compatible with the Choc V2's? I've found several vendors selling sockets for V1, but none state if they are compatible with V2.

Any help is appreciated!

The Kailh choc v1 socket is part number CPG135001S30. The data sheet indicates its slots are 5mm x 2.2mm apart. https://github.com/keyboardio/keyswitch_documentation/blob/master/datasheets/Kailh/CPG135001S30-Choc-Socket.pdf

Choc v2 is part number CPG135301Dxx. The data sheet indicates its pins are 5mm x 2.1mm apart, plus a third pin on the opposite corner. So the choc v1 socket is not compatible. https://github.com/keyboardio/keyswitch_documentation/blob/master/datasheets/Kailh/CPG135301D01.pdf

So your best option is probably Mill-Max 3305. https://www.mill-max.com/products/pin-receptacle/receptacle-with-no-tail/3305

You can use Kailh choc hot swap sockets:
https://www.kailhswitch.com/mechanical-keyboard-switches/box-switches/choc-type-hot-swap-socket.html
However, the PCB and top plate must have footprints (slots) that are compatible with choc v2 switches. In particular, you must have a larger center pin.

The mill-max sockets must be lined up very exactly and tend to result in bent pins. The Kailh OEM sockets are much better.

That page says the sockets are only compatible with choc v1, which agrees with what I said based on the data sheets.

It has been done. The Corne DC keyboard fits both Kailh Choc V1 and Choc V2, in Kailh Choc hot-swap sockets.
Here's a picture of the PCB.

That keyboard had been designed with custom component footprints that support both types of switches.
A Choc V2 switch will not fit in a keyboard that has been designed for Choc V1 exclusively, or vice versa.
The keyboard must have been especially designed to fit both.

Also, Cherry MX Low Profile, or TTC low profile switches will not fit in this keyboard: only Choc V1 and Choc V2.  Cherry's and TTC's low-profile switches have centre posts that are too wide and pins in different places.
It would be possible to make a footprint for soldering switches that would fit all four types though, as you can see in this diagram.
