A new switch type from Datacomp?
« on: Thu, 11 June 2009, 17:41:56 »

"
Compared to the fairly-uninteresting news we featured earlier, this news could be an explosive insight for keyboard fanatics – datacomp may develop from scrape, a brand new switch for mechanical keyboards.

We are eager to bring you the details we have learned, however, the manufacturer is less keen on releasing the details to the public yet. For those who are interested in this may wish to drop by to try out the engineering sample.

In the demostaration unit, the manufacturer actually mixed a bunch of different switches together in one keypad. Although similar, there are certain chances we can feel the subtle differences in between (if we are allowed to release the detail, it wouldn't be difficult for keyboard fans to guess the design orientation of this new switch.)"

From here.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Given that article was posted seven days ago I'm surprised I'm the first one here to post the news, especially as I don't read chinese.

Now, let the speculation begin!

Oh yeah! The new axis Mingzhe a!

http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.iqmore.idv.tw%2Farchives%2F675&sl=auto&tl=en&history_state0=

so does anyone want to translate the translation? :

"This is the first burst point, that is, to a new axis Mingzhe a! 這數字鍵盤上有Cherry 青、黑、茶、紅軸+ 明哲新軸,最後我只有紅軸跟新軸分不太出來。 This figure Cherry keyboard has blue, black, tea, red axis + Mingzhe new axis, and finally I have only red shaft axis with the new hours do not come out. 並不是說兩種軸相同,手感算是比較新近,沒分出來是因為我還沒長期打紅軸,兩種的手感還是有些微不同。 Two-axis is not to say that the same hand is relatively new, no sub-out is because I have not red long axis, two or a slightly different feel.

As for the new shaft look like, I can only say with Cherry MX Cross-axis is not different, but a font, but the overall appearance and ALPS different axis. 由於這還算是商業機密,所以圖片我就沒拍來放上,等當產品上市就會知道嚕。 As a result of this be regarded as trade secrets, so I have no picture to put pictures, and will know when to market chatter"

By the way, has anyone tried the red axis cherries yet?

Sort of (I'm not entirely sure, though). Basically they're black MX switches with the lighter spring. They do feel a bit like blues, only even lighter. Somewhat nice actually, but just resting your fingers on the keys can produce keypresses, which is a bit strange at first.

Font on the keycaps looks exactly like the italicized FILCO font. Which isn't going to fly in any production unit. This might be a cobbled together mod someone is playing Engadget with...suspicious description as well...I'll believe a new switch when I see it :suspicious:

The experience I have with "reds" are modified blacks, i.e. blacks with the light spring swapped in. So I might be completely wrong, but let's just suppose I wasn't.
I think they're lighter than browns, for they have no tactile bump. They might be quite exceptional switches if you can get used to them, but I think they're a bit too light to press. With browns, the tactile bump keeps you from accidentally pressing keys all the time, but I'm not so sure with reds ... the board they were swapped in is currently a bit disassembled, and since it doesn't feature any pointing devices, I'm not all too eager to use it as a daily driver. I suppose all hope is lost with me, keyboards with integrated pointing devices are just perfect. It's a shame the pointing stick on the Endurapro is so crappy, though.

Translated version :
Mingzhe (Datacomp TW)'s selling point today is that they are going to release a new type of mechanical keyswitch!
On this numpad, there is a mixture of a few different Cherry-type keyswitch (Blue/Black/Brown/Red) plus Mingzhe's new keyswitch.
I was able to distinguish between all the different Cherry keyswitches but  it was hard trying to differentiate between the red Cherry and the new kewyswitch, even though the feel of these 2 keyswitches were still minutely different from each other.

The physical difference between Mingzhe's new keyswitch with other mechanical keyswitches on the market is that it is not cross-shaped like the Cherrys but rather "-" shaped. Even so, it is vastly different from the ALPS keyswitch as the overall appearance do not resemble each other.

Since the details of the keyswitch is still considered an industry secret, I have not taken any pictures, so just wait for the product to launch instead!

thanks!!!  yay for bilingualism :)

I want one of those numpads...

too bad the new switch isnt much different from an existing switch... although I have yet to see any board (avail to US anyway) that uses the reds... not that I want one, it sounds too light to me.  Cherry makes them either too light or too heavy (blacks) for me.

I always hate to rely on Engadget as a news source

Well I saw it at iqmore first but the machine translation only hinted at a new switch and didn't provide any details so I went looking for somewhere that had reported it in English but engadget was the only one I found.

Mingzhe are obviously just Datacomp.

The slot on the top of this looks like it accepts alps keycaps. I was hoping for a new Alps switch more refined than the reports of the fakes, but if it's like the red cherrys then it sounds like it'll be linear, although if the keycaps are tightly held then it might be like the filco linear rather than the usual wobbly cherry keyboard ones.

if the unit price is cheap, you could make a decent per-unit profit selling it as a "cherry sampler". You'd be the only guy probably who would have them for individual sale.  Just advertise your services on gh and those japanese keyb sites and I'm sure the 1000 units would fly off the shelf.

Welly, you MUST teach "Capitalism 101".

lol. you want to hear something funny? I consider myself a socialist ;D hahahaha!

But I do "get" that capitalism thrives on perpetual optimism, and I'm all for small enterprise.
