Geekhackin' #1 – Mingsanity: Gucci Edition (Out now)
« on: Wed, 27 November 2013, 18:05:53 »
So, mkawa has decided to be the first person to be interviewed in the all new GH Podcast series type things. As of right now, It'll be myself, Binge, and mkawa in a 30 minute Q&A on December 1. We are planning on livestreaming it and taking questions from both this thread, and live chat. We'll try to announce 30m before we start so people can join the chat and stream (audio, not video as of right now). Also we're thinking of a better name for the interview casts, someone has suggested "Getting Personal with ___" so if you have any ideas about that, let us know too.

So post questions below, and mkawa stay out of the thread!

There were some audio troubles :x

Just don't get ming started talking about making pizza.

If there was a dearth of other information you could do a special pizza episode.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

And you may want to consider posting a reason for your opinion and a viable alternative?

justin as in justin.tv justin???

I'm pretty sure twitch has completely separated itself from justin.tv iirc, but I guess he would still have some kind of pull.

Interesting...When is the auction debate coming since the subject was not covered? I didn't think the vendor forum was such an important topic. Most of the controversy I've seen has been around auctions/blatant ripoffs. I did, however, enjoy the part where mkawa explained how EK, feng, and qtan became vendors here.

the vendor 'origin' stories were great; feng's was hilarious.

I'm pretty sure the auction was for the main podcast, not this interview 'special.'

is the vendor forums something users have problems with?  or is it just an admin concern?  I always liked systems that showed 'top 5' forum out of a larger group.  everytime a vendor would make a new topic for a new product/sale/other type of promotion, they would get sent up to the top and enjoy some advertising; any vendor not committed would just suffer.

i used to do yoga with justin's mom. i'm pretty sure i can get us allowed on twitch if some sysadmin has a fit.

justin as in justin.tv justin???

I'm pretty sure twitch has completely separated itself from justin.tv iirc, but I guess he would still have some kind of pull.
yah, that justin. i've only met his mother, not him, but my understanding is that he is hugely focused on twitch at the moment, as it has the biggest viewerbase to work with. they both run on the same more or less the same software stack. twitch started as a branding effort to focus on esports, gaming livestreams, etc. and as you know grew into a bit of a behemoth.

the proliferation of vendor forums are an admin concern because i feel that they negatively impact user experience. there's just kind of a hodgepodge of these little subfora in various states of dis/repair and the end result is that most people ignore them unless something really big happens with a vendor. as a result, many of our vendors advertise in the more popular classifieds and group buy forums, which contributes to the general clutter of the place.

i think i expressed my view on auctions and so on with the statement about where most moderation incidents come from: it's the money. that's an issue that we're going to have to come together and address as a community, and not one that the admins can just wave a magic wand at.

A few people offered a few ideas in that thread, which you didn't bother to answer or address.

As BroCaps has stated, I don't think much of the issue has been touched on at all in this radio cast. Unless, you've touched on these on the forum. Either way, the members who wanted to express their opinions on auctions (and flipping of items, mainly CCs, for $$$) already have. I feel that I have been one of the more vocal in the discussion which took place, so I'm really looking forward to see what the admin staff decides to do. You (the admin staff) have heard all kinds of opinions and views on auctions and flipping, so it's time to make something out of it.

I listened to it yesterday.  Thanks for the shout outs there Mkawa.  A link to my keyboard project is in my signature for future reference.

Also on my trebuchet phase.  I never actually finished my project.  But it should have been able to hurl a golf ball about 300 yards when properly tuned.  And it was only going to be about 4 feet tall.  Might have been able to throw a little farther with some of the modifications I had floating around in my head.  There were a couple reasons for me abandoning that project.  Mostly it was due to either having time and no money or having money and no time.  Plus that was when I learned my wood working skills are severely lacking compared to my metal working skills and it would have gotten fairly pricey to purchase that much steel.

But if anyone is interested in that hobby the best site by far would be www.thehurl.org

The large rigs that hurl pumpkins are very expensive.  The only one that I have actually seen a dollar figure for regarding build costs was the one by team merlin.  It is a very hybridized floating axle whipper and it is also set up with hydraulics.  The owner/operater just backs up his trailer to his spot, unhooks, levels the trailer, fires up his hydraulic pump, throws some levers, and his rig is set up with the exception of setting the carriage.  But just the raw steel for that machine cost in the realm of $50,000.  And no that is not a typo.

That mispronunciation of Topre drives me nuts... that and Kirk's theme choice. <3

disputes over money are always complex microeconomic and social issues that the admins cannot and will  not "fix". what will happen is that the moderation team will step in when needed to keep discussion civil and community-positive.
