Ceraclack Service Complete, no more orders
« on: Wed, 16 January 2019, 16:28:47 »

This is my Second time ever running a service I have learned a lot from when I first started doing this! Thank you everyone that has followed my journey of cerakote. I'm mixing it up with round 2 and running the service a bit differently, after talking with the shop and a few users I learned that more boards can be completed faster if they all get the same color, the shop doesn't have to constantly keep changing colors to work on all the boards. With that in mind I am going to run 1 colorway at a time, I have already selected the first color based on a poll I ran in the Ceraclack discord. Graphite Black will be the first color that we will run with. I will allow 50 boards for this color. Once all 50 are complete we will run the next color and so fourth. Kind of like artisan fulfillment colorways. Periodically I will allow a few commissions on the side to allow for people to go crazy on whatever colors they want, but it will definitely be far less than Round 1.

I will be posting pics of more boards that I get cerakoted in a album on imgur you can find that link right here: https://imgur.com/a/eIy8SsM

What is Cerakote?

Cerakote is a ceramic based finish that can be applied to most metals, plastics, polymers and wood. The unique formulation used for Cerakote ceramic coating enhances a number of physical performance properties including abrasion/wear resistance, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, impact strength, and hardness. Cerakote will also remove most blemishes from whatever surface it is applied to.

The specific shop that I will be using uses all the cerakote colors. Here are all the base colors: https://www.cerakote.com/finishes/

The Shop is able to use any series colors along with guncandy colors: https://www.guncandy.com/collections/all-colors

The H Series (Oven Baked Series) is one of the toughest series and is very durable.
The C Series (Air Cured Series) is used for Plastics and will be used when plastic boards.
The Gun Candy colors are air cured colors and will work on both plastic and metal.

Please be aware that in order to cerakote the keyboards the shop owner will sandblast the anodization off the keyboard then coat the board in the ceramic finish. This won't effect tolerances all that much. I have tested that out with my Noxary X60, along with a few other boards and everything seems to fit just fine.

$35 + return shipping to get a 60% cerakoted? Count me in. When my Grid600 gets here I need to get that baby sprayed silver.. I'm in Memphis so im sure shipping will be minimal as well.

Definitely a cool service and prices seem almost too good to be true! Might give this a try.

In terms of the Cerakote process, does this process and price include the removal of other finishes like anode, MAO, etc?

Yes, the cost covers the removal of the finish on the board!

After talking to the owner for a bit it seems like a lot of these places charge a lot more because of all the amount of work they have to preform on the guns that come in. They need to open them up, degrease them, then take care of all the little individual parts along with having to use the proper tools to take apart the guns. When it comes to keyboards they are a lot simpler and I already bring them unassembled.

I've been wanting to cerkaote one of my TKLs for a while now...

Edit: holy cow that's a lot of available colors. Choosing one is gonna be a challenge.

This is awesome. Is there any chance the actual cost might come in under 35? Not that 35 isn't super reasonable, more curious because I'd be interested in only the top half of a 45% which is probably much less surface area than a full 60%. The answer 'same price for my trouble' is also perfectly reasonable :)

Damn that X60 looks good.  Almost exactly what I was thinking of doing to mine.
Your price is definitely better than what the shop by me quoted,
but then again I'm in south FL where everything is overpriced  :))

$35 is super cheap anyway. Any cheaper and I imagine the shop is either giving away the materials or some portion of the time/labor.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I had a package stolen from me on Tuesday from my current address. Unfortunately that package was GMK Monochome, so I'm hurt that one of my favorite sets was stolen from me but at least I can learn not to have packages shipped to my address anymore. With that being said All keyboards sent for cerakoting will be sent to my parent house which has a Nest Doorbell so I will see all the deliveries. My mom is also retired and is home all the time so your keyboard will be in good hands! Luckily they only live 20 mins away from me so I can stop by on my way to the cerakote shop to pick up the boards.

That really sucks that you got your stuff stolen.  Damn porch pirates.

I had a question about your first board you had done, which I also ran across on the cerakote website :)

https://www.cerakote.com/gallery/detail/43297/Cerakote-custom-key-board-in-h143-benelli-sand/

Did your dude mask anything on the board before proceeding?  That's all.  Thanks

Ayy the guy was able to post a pic of it to the site! Awesome! As for masking he didn't need to he coated all the surface area of both halves. So both the inside and the outside are Benelli Sand. He even cerakoted my screws for the X60!

Filled out a form for Cobalt, though I was really thinking Sniper Grey would do the trick. Is the blue weight or base of your Pearl also Sniper Grey? That's the main thing that stopped me. My SO is looking for a dark grey, but not too dark, and certainly not blue or bluish. She really likes Charcoal.

e: After doing a bit of white balancing in Lightroom, it looks like Sniper Grey is lighter in color than what she wants, and close to the render that is posted on cerakote.com. "What you see is what you get" looks pretty true in this case. Their examples and galleries all just have terrible lighting it seems. We'll stick with Cobalt, assuming the 40-person cap hasn't been met. (:

Spoke with the Shop Owner (Abel) and he let me know that MAO can be sandblasted off just like normal anodization. Him and I will be testing PLA to see if it can be cerakoted, I have recieved a few messages regarding trying to get a dactyl cerakoted, I would rather test out a cheap 3D printed Planck case before people start sending theirs just to make sure it will work. He is also going to get me a color ring with every single H Series color on it. As of right now I can say that each color texture will vary, some are smooth, some are a little bit rougher!

Yeah, this service is really awesome! My SO was disappointed in how light of a gray, almost silver, her KBD75 case was when it arrived; and they don't sell dark gray cases. Now we have a chance to fix it.  :thumb:

I have a question regarding this -- is every "wave" of boards a lead time of 2-3 weeks?

So 2nd wave will happen 2-3 weeks from now?

I'd like to have a board cerakoted but it seems I'm late, and I'd have to wait months if I submitted an entry now.

I'm trying to run this service as best as possible, but since it is the first time I am running it I am trying to see how well I manage with 5 boards at a time, if the shop owner can manage 5 boards I will talk to him about bringing more boards in batches, I would hate to have an incorrect color be put on a board because there are too many boards and the owner was getting confused. Please be patient, the cerakote process alone takes about a week to a week and a half, my estimation of time is 2-3 weeks because I am factoring in time for the owners to ship to me, time at the cerakote shop, and time for me to ship back to the owners.

I just added a public spreadsheet with people's positions, boards, and colors. People who have filled out the form can look over what board and colors they selected for the top and bottom colors. Here's the spreadsheet

Oh dang I'm #12! Wave 3 ftw. Only thing that needs to be different is the change from Cobalt to Magpul Stealth Grey H-188Q.

Only the top and bottom are cerakoted? Is it possible to cerakote other parts of the keyboard?

Of course! It's going to cost more and we can talk about it when I send you a private message when it is time for your wave.

I was able to get 7 boards for the first wave so it looks like you will be part of wave two! :) I'll also update that for you on the spreadsheet.

Just passing this along from a Reddit post. You can order color swatches of the  H series colors for free. May be smart to try different colors next to your board in different lighting conditions.

You can get up to 5 per request:

The owner of the shop already ordered me a color ring of all the colors so I can compared them and post pics of them for whenever someone wants to see a specific color. But yeah if people on the list want a specific color and you are having to wait a bit, might as well as order the color you want to see if it's exactly what you want. :)

Just finished labeling all the pieces for the first wave. I will be taking them to the shop tomorrow afternoon. Here's an example of how I label each part of the boards.

All boards have been dropped off and I have been given a quote of next friday as the completion date for all of them. I ended up taking more than I expected for this first batch and took 11 keyboards, but thankfully since I labeled every single piece for each board the shop isn't going to get confused. Once this first wave is completed I will take the next 10 boards and we can definitely shorten the waves down to 4! I'm going to leave my expected completion date and set that as my challenge to beat! I hope everyone is happy with these little updates. I also got confirmation that the shop can indeed cerakote brass along with any metal you have. I have a few pics of a custom red samurai Jetfire brass Weight that they are currently trying to match colors for. I told them it needs a little bit more red in the mix, the current mix seems to be too brown/maroon. Almost like a Aggie Maroon.

This advice was golden. By doing so we found the perfect grey for what she's going for. I'll try to get some decent photos, but judging the slight nuances is best done in person. Anyone that is really picky with matching shades perfectly should get on this as soon as possible before your turn. I filled out the order form on Tuesday or Wednesday and got them on Monday without the rush service.

Thanks for the link to order samples.  I had no idea that was there and I've browsed the colors for about a year now.  Ha!  Ordered some!

Tyson, how much does your guy charge for custom colors? I assume it costs more?

I got a quote back from him on custom colors on a normal sized 60% with just a top and bottom piece and he let me know it was going to be about $40. So not too much more. I started talking to them about making a custom Bento color for a board of mine. But since we don't have anything to show the color in person I'll just have to wait.

Stopped by the shop to drop off a my 60XT along with a friends board, the owner said that most of them will be ready for pick up tomorrow! We talked for a bit and he mentioned that they can also do some pretty cool designs if anyone was interested in having a design on a board. He also mentioned that they can do some special pearlescent colors and told me to check out Gun Candy if anyone wanted to see what those colors look like. No pics yet, my visit today was very brief. I'll post pics when I get the boards tomorrow.

Those "gun candy" coatings look sick. Are they similar to cerakote, or something completely different?

I took a picture of some of the various greys, with a white balance card (your monitor might have different color calibration than what the colors are in reality). It was fun comparing each with my SO to see which matches her board...like picking the paint color for a kid's room or something.

1. Stone Grey
2. Glock Grey         4. Cobalt
3. SIG Dark Grey    5. Magpul Stealth Grey

Some notes:

*The Glock Grey had a bit of a bluish tint.
*Cobalt has a slightly rough, fine texture, with tiny sparkles.
*Magpul Stealth Grey is hard to distinguish from black. It's the most charcoal of all the greys.

We went with SIG Dark Grey because it was a true grey, and was darker than Stone Grey. Beautiful colors all around.

Definitely Cerakote, their just mixes of other colors. I'm getting my 60XT cerakoted in Blue Steel to match Nautilus colors. Should be really good!

That’s very cool to see the colors compared.  I have some swatches coming soon and I can take photos too. I’ll put some common keycap sets beside them.  Do you have anything with N9 gray to put next to those?  Maybe Dolch or hydro or coniferous?   Or maybe a lighter gray like in hyperfuse or Honeywell?

Good idea! Here it is:

Clockwise from left: SA Oblivion, GMK 9009, GMK Terminal, GMK Dolch. You might need to go into MS Paint and move some of the caps around to compare them to each swatch.

Just spoke to Abel from the shop, gloss black, graphite black and zombie green boards are all done. Which means my Nightfox, Japanesehorrorwriter's Pearl and Poblopuablo's Lunar AEK are done.  I will try to pick these up today on my lunch break! I also created a discord for the service! I'll be posting updates and everything in there on top of keeping this thread updated. Hope to see you in there! https://discord.gg/sgcqgWK

Small roadblock for the few boards I have that are ready to get mailed out... I apologize for not printing out shipping labels today. I bought a printer with intention to print out labels to mail out some of the boards tomorrow. I set everything up then realized I forgot to buy paper... I'll print out the labels at work tomorrow and drop your stuff off. As for the rest of the boards from Wave 1, I will be going to Dallas on Friday for the meetup and for the Red Velvet concert up there, I will be getting back on Monday night and should be able to ship some if not all the rest of Wave 1 out. Friday morning I will be stopping by the shop to grab the rest of the boards that are still there, expect more pics and if you haven't already I suggest you join my discord, I am making sure to keep updates on here, but am on discord for 90% of my day so more updates are posted there first! https://discord.gg/sgcqgWK

That board in the middle, what color is that, Graphite Black? (Asking because I've currently written down Graphite Black for my board's color)

Also that green one looks awesome

It looks like the right hand side of the board at the top might have some imperfections, it might just be the lighting or something though. Can you verify?

That is from the owner bringing it out with wet hands. She had just washed her hand and handed the board to me. The color being Gloss Black kept the smudge on it when she sat it down. I wiped it off right after the pic.

New update! I have quiet a bit of news! I've received 8 of the 9 boards for Wave 2, I have been trying to contact the owner of the last board to get him to mail it out, but unfortunately he has yet to mail it out. Instead of waiting for his board to come in I'm just going to take all 8 to the shop tomorrow. They will be working on the boards as fast as they can as Tara (the shop owners wife and assistant) will be giving birth on Monday. Because of this wave 2 might take a little longer to be completed, or all the boards might get completed faster and be done by Sunday. Either case, I will be contacting Wave 3 people when the shop is back up and running. Hopefully that doesn't take too long. I will keep everyone updated on this situation! Thankfully we are head of the schedule that I set in place.

Do you want the board disassembled when mailing it to you?  Do we keep the screws or send it with the board?

That would be best, I don't mind if you send your board with the screws in it to keep everything in place in transit, I've been putting screws in baggies and labeling them so I know which screws go with which boards.

Update 11 (2/14/19): Went to the shop today, none of the boards were done.  I did walk into the back of the shop and saw the QKL on a table along with THE50's getting prepped to get media blasted.
Tara was the only one there Abel (The Shop Owner) had left for the day, she said that she was going to stay late today and hopefully get everything in the oven.
There's a chance she will have her baby tomorrow, it would be better if she has the baby tomorrow because that would mean Abel would be able to come back to work on Monday.
If she has the baby on Monday Abel will be out the whole week.
Meaning the shop will be closed for a week. This probably isn't the update anyone wanted to hear. Wave 2 is going to be slower than Wave 1 it seems. Please refer to the spreadsheet for updates on the status of Wave 2. I will update in here as always.

Update 12 (2/26/19): Went to the shop yesterday and today to deliver all the boards from wave 2. I also picked up some of the last remaining boards from wave 1. A few of them are still there. I talked to Tara about all the boards that were being dropped off and she mentioned to me that her and Abel are probably going to have to start raising the price on the next wave of boards. Unfortunately they underestimated the amount of time and effort that it takes to make sure that all the boards get coated perfectly and are up to customers satisfaction. A lot of these boards are having to get recoated multiple times to make sure the coat is just right and isn't too light, she also mentioned that this price increase is due to the number of boards now coming in. Because of that the starting cost is going to be raised from $35 to $50. It's just a $15 increase. If anyone is not ok with the price increase and would like to cancel there spot please let me know.  Again I am sorry that I will be having to increase the price, I hope you will be willing to continue using the service, I know so far most of the boards have come out fantastic and everyone is seeming to love them!

Still a great price and below market prices for cerakote here in LA. And to have you QCing the boards before they are shipped back...both worth the price hike, imho.

These all look great! Would it be possible to get an aluminmum knob cerakoted? Very hard to find a nice white one. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Quality-1pcs-17-16mm-Aluminum-Potentiometer-Knob-for-6mm-Round-Shaft/32744496347.html?spm=a2g0s.13010208.99999999.259.44d93c00vkYY3I This is the one I have. Will the cerakote be thin enough to preserve the knurling?

Keep up the good work! Really cool of you to provide such a great service.

No new updates?

My bad, I forgot to update this thread with the update from last month.

Update 13 (3/13/19): I hadn't heard much from them since the last update, I did stop by last week and picked up a few boards that were still part of Wave 1. I just got a text from Abel letting me know that a lot of boards are done and that I should come pick them up today. So I plan on going right now to see which boards are done and which boards they are still working on. I am also waiting on a few more wave 3 boards before I take those to the shop. Tara mentioned to me that she was having trouble coating boards in white colors and purple colors and mentioned that they could potentially need to double the price for those colors specifically, I am hoping to find out more today as I looked on the list and it looks like only a few people have been requesting white and purple colors.

I haven't posted an update 14 yet. All of Wave 3's boards are in the shop, I'm mailing out Wave 2 boards right now. I have the Austin Meetup coming up this weekend so that's going to put a stop on shipping for the weekend. The cost for white and purple colors will be a $10 increase from normal colors. I'll  post update 14 when I go visit them this week to go pick up my 60XT.

After doing some thinking. I will not be proceeding with running a Round 2 for this service. I have been having issues with the shop keeping there lower prices and have had to start paying out of pocket for peoples boards, along with shipping. I will continue finishing round 1 boards as those are all almost done. But with these price increases I have been having I have started losing money and it is taking a toll on my car. I am sorry for coming to this conclusion. I understand that people were really looking forward to getting there board refinished. I suggest anyone still interested in getting their board cerakoted to please look for a shop close to you in your city or surrounding area. I will still keep this discord open to help others out and help people decide what would be the best colors to go with for their boards. Again, I apologize about having to call it quits on Round 2. I started this service to help others, once it started forcing me to pay money out of my own pocket it started to get tougher then I imagined. I will keep updating the progress for Round 1 boards to make sure everyone is in the loop on those boards.

3rd wave still being cerakoted?

Yeah, they've been on a spree of gun shows and haven't had time to complete all the boards at the shop. I've been texting them about once a week to ask how progress is going. Expect pics hopefully next week or the week after. I really want to get this done as fast as possible. Sorry this third wave is taking so long. A few things have changed on it as I have stated above. I'm hoping they don't take this long on the last wave. They are really dragging it out now. :( Once I get pics of the boards being mostly completed I will contact and invoice the last wave.  Here's the previous update that I posted in my discord.

Update 14 (4/17/18): The shop is currently closed this week while the owners are out of town. They said that they will be getting back to work on all the boards and have them all done by the first week of May. There was a miscommunication with shop on when the boards would be finished. I thought it was going to be this week but looks like I was wrong. I apologize for the delay. I am working on completing the service, I unfortunately will not be looking into running a Round 2 at this point. Most of Wave 2 boards have been mailed out, there are about 4 that I am working on getting out this week. Everyone who is part of Wave 4, be on the look out for a PM from me at the beginning of May.

Got my board back last night. As far as tolerances go, the only thing I noticed was the brass weight was slightly tougher to get into place. Everything else seems fine - plate fits, all screws go in w/o issue, no gaps between the top & bottom piece, and the usb port still fits through the slot. So I don't think it's something that you need to be worried about :)

Update 15 (5/17/19): Got a Text from Tara yesterday letting me know that 3 boards were done. Those 3 boards were a Lunar, a Noxary 268.1 and a TGR 910. All of them came out perfect! While I was there Tara and I talked about how much work they currently have in house, and how big their backlog is. She also let me know that most of the boards there will be completed by next week. She also explained to me that she would love to work on more boards and that all these keyboards have caught Cerakote.com's attention, they personally emailed Tara asking for more pictures to showcase their work on keyboards! All of your guys support and reception has been amazing! Tara let me know that they would like to continue working on boards, but the only issue and reason why these boards take forever to get done is that they have to mix and prep so many different colors. There will be a new plan in place for round 2 and future rounds of this public service, I will have a more detailed plan on what how Round 2 will work in a future post. For now I wanted to give everyone an update on Round 1 and a thank you for the support!

Didn't join in for the first wave but recently got a board I'd like to have coated so happy to hear that you're starting another round!

edit** wanted to get my LZ CLS ms done in a green but not really digging the green options on the cerakote website. I'll have to do some more thinking...

Exciting news!

Any updates on R2? :)

Soon, now that the shop is working faster on all the boards I'll be making a post about R2 very soon, this month for sure. I just want to complete everything and mail everything out before I continue. Need to finish R1 so I don't get ahead of my self with round 2. lol

I was wondering - what is that cerakoting process? What is the difference between this and powder coating?
Is it stronger? What kind of finish can you get?

I have most of your questions listed and answered in the original start of this post. Cerakote is different from powdercoat as it is a ceramic based material and is a lot more fine than powdercoat. It's stronger and can resist more chemicals along with it being more durable in outdoor environments. I have all the finishes listed in the original start of this post. Please feel free to go back and read what I wrote out along with the colors that are listed. I am going to be changing up round  2 and will not be offering all the colors at once, but will be having one color per wave. The First Wave will be Graphite Black, the Second Wave will be a Custom Olivia Rose Gold color. The rest will be put to a vote at a later date.

Update 20 (7/24/19): Going to the shop today to pick up most of Wave 4. The only remaining boards from wave 4 are a Canoe and a HHKB. I am also going to drop off a few things to test out a couple of colors. I am dropping off 8 REDACTED boards to test out a new GMK Olivia Rose Gold color, and my TKC1800 to test out a GunCandy Chameleon color, it's a color that has multiple tones in it and changes color in certain lighting! These boards are not part of the Wave and will not hinder the start of Round 2. Not too sure if you have noticed yet but I have rebranded the service, it's not Tyson's Cerakote Service anymore, I've become Ceraclack! Thank to OneCreativeMind for creating the logo and some sticker ideas for the service! He won the logo contest and has decided to give his free spot away. I will be running a giveaway at the start of round 2 for a free coating, more news will come on that in a few weeks, I promise! In the mean time I will keep mailing everything out to get everything back to everyone that has submitted a board for cerakote! If I have completed you board please post a picture of it in #gallery it seems nobody ever posts their pics in there even when I ask. Hope everyone has a nice rest of their week!

The form says graphite black.  Is that the only option this round?

Yes! I am running the rounds a bit different now and will run them kind of like artisan colorways. To start off I will be doing just graphite black for the first 50 boards, once those 50 are complete I will do another 50 in a different colorway. The shop let me know that they can work on larger volumes if they are all the same color. That is why these waves will be single colors. I will open commissions every once and a while when time allows it just in case you were looking at doing something a bit more wild than one color. :)

I just got word that the shop has made some progress with the boards that are still there. They worked on them Friday morning and finished a few of them around noon. I am going to try to go there on Thursday to pick them up, the Canoe, and HHKB are still being worked on. As for Round 2, I will close entry for Graphite Black next Wednesday night and start invoicing people so they can start sending the boards to me, I will give them two weeks to mail me their board before I refund their order. The weather will have cooled off just enough for the shop to work on boards throughout the day. I'll hopefully get those done in a month. Once those are done I'll start mailing them back. Just like the usual I'll keep everyone updated and post pics

Just dropped off all the boards that I have received so far!
The shop told me to hold off on bringing more until they finish some up. I will have to wait to take the remaining boards, I'll be updating the spreadsheet shortly. If yours isn't at the shop that means either you didn't send it to me on time or your package is arriving late.

I am also running a giveaway on my discord for hitting 200 members! If you aren't in it and would like to join the giveaway feel free to join and react to the post!

I am also running an IC for GMK Ashes right now, along with prepping everything for the Austin meetup! If you are interested in a nice keyset that will work with almost any color please feel free to look at GMK Ashes! I plan on making some renders with cerakoted board colors!
