Bearing Goofed*

Applied krytox grease to a ball bearing fan,   Now it makes this wet licking noise, like someone handwashing cloths in the river...

Yeah not the right grease to use in a bearing based fan, 105 would've probably worked better - unless it was 105 - then the bearings were probably done as it was (races could've been bad).

The balls/cage/races were free-moving when I was cleaning out the old grease.

I did hear it make kind of a grinding noise before from cold bootup. Maybe it is done. or at some point seized.

Easy comedy for the audience,  but Tp4 was traumatized when he turned the machine back on.

I'd say time to source some Noctua Redux or Industrials and things will be better.

The adda Hypro bearing fan (fluid bearing) on the gpu is great, popped the blades off, input krytox, perfectly smooth.

The bbear cpu fan is the original though, so it's sentimental, Sighhhhhh

this reminds Tp4 of why he h8s ball bearing fans.  Fluid bearings FTW.

i have a few server fans with ball bearing that came from a 1st generation compaq proliant, still working flawlessly something like 40 years later, i do not think the hate is deserved. although fluid bearing are more efficient and silent, so yeah overall better, but good ball bearings can last a long time

Still a loving the Corsair ML fans I have in one of my rigs.  Bearing based fans are finnicky if not in the proper orientation that prevents premature failure.

they keep working, that's not the problem, the problem is they get noisy.

Noisy is a sign of failure - it's the way a bearing warns you it's on it's way out.
