[IC] Paw - Arrow Cluster Macropad
« on: Mon, 12 October 2020, 07:00:12 »
Introducing

Paw
A project by dingusxmcgee and KnoblesseOblige

Paw is an arrow cluster macropad, aimed at expanding any desk setup with increased functionality, sleek design and convenience.
With onboard Bluetooth, brass accents and a sandblasted polycarbonate case, Paw will be a standout piece no matter where you use it.

Let's skip right to some renders prototype photos

I brought this idea to KnoblesseOblige (Taylor) back in May, and what started as a meme, grew into reality. After 2 rounds of prototyping, many hours optimizing and brainstorming, we are ready to bring our project to the masses. The goal was to fill the gap left by moving to smaller and smaller boards: missing arrow keys. With Paw, you can bring your arrow keys anywhere and effortlessly expand the possibilities of big and small boards alike.

Specs
Sandblasted Polycarbonate Top and Bottom(frosted)
Sandblasted, Top mount Brass plate
Sandblasted Brass weight
Approximately 81 grams built
4 Onboard RGB LEDs
PCB includes ESD protection and Hotswap
Onboard Bluetooth functionality

Note: Due to licensing conflicts, Paw will not ship, nor be compatible with, main QMK. It will ship with ZMK, and Bluetooth-first firmware that has more permissive licensing and better battery life optimizations. A QMK fork will be available to self-compile if you would like to pursue that method. Please note that ZMK will not have feature parity with QMK, though it is being actively developed and maintained. You can find more information here: https://zmkfirmware.dev
150mah battery (approximate usage rates: 30 days of active use and 60 days standby)
Note: values are approximate and subject to change based on usage and firmware used

but how do you type numbers

It's programmable so you could make each key an FN when held so hold left and up becomes 1, down 2 and right 3.  Hold down and left becomes 4, up 5 and right 6.  Hold right and left is 7, up 8 and down 9.  That leaves up to switch the bottom three keys to be FN's to switch the default actions between arrows, page up/down home and end, and ... maybe some media keys?

Methinks anyone who can get their head around this would be using a layer on their main board for arrows instead

I'm curious if there are plans to release one that's not of an arrow key variety? I would love one that's like a 2x3 format. Of course, that's on your creative direction to decide :)

Can't wait to snag one of these ;D

Hey! Glad you're excited!
Method of purchase for the artisan is currently planned to be on the same website. While we may not be able to get photos of all possible artisans, you can check Pseudoku's Instagram for a great look at some of his previous casts. We will absolutely try and get any pictures up that we can :)

Removing the switch will reduce unnecessary complexity, and will largely go unnoticed anyway. Battery life is already pushing two months idle. If you're not using it for that long already, chances are you're going to want to recharge it anyway to ensure a full battery. On top of that, once deep sleep is fixed/implemented in ZMK the idle battery life will increase considerably.

Ah, makes sense. Thank you for the clarification. This seems useful to have on my desk when I'm using a 60% and need my arrows for some specific task
