I ended up ordering these keycaps from WASD.  (Plus some spares/alternates.)  The "Function" and "Function Lock" keycaps are in red; the "Fn Key" keycap is in blue.  I am going to try a locking switch for the Function Lock key, but if that doesn't work, I'll swap it and deploy my second Function keycap.

Now all I need is that PCB and plate set to get here...

Here's the tentative layout for my SmallFry:

75205-0

I was hoping to use the Green Tea Set for it, but I'm not sure it'll work for the bottom row  :(

Freshly assembled JD40 base kit from CtrlAlt

- Vintage MX Blacks
- Home Depot supplied the awesome stick-on, stackable rubber feet for $4
- I sanded both sides of the bottom plate and the outward facing side of the top plate with 320 grit sandpaper
- The key caps I'm using are a hideous mess of 3 sets combined from a Filco, a vintage Wyse terminal, and a bunch of lasered Cherry PBT's from an old point-of-sale board
- I really dislike Cherry plate stabs ... even if they are lubed I can never seem to "tune" them to feel even remotely as nice as Costar stabs

I created an imgur album with a bunch more pictures here

Realforce EK45 (Silenced)  |  Realforce 87UW (45g)  |  Realforce 87UWS (Variable)
Filco MJ2 TKL (Cherry Clears)  |  Phantom 87 (78g Gateron Clears)  |  Phantom 86 (67g Zealios)

Nice, strict! Can't wait to get mine.

Was the sanding really necessary?

Also glad the feet worked out.

Thanks! I'm sure you will love it, the design of the kit as well as the quality of the components are all top notch.

I definitely wouldn't say the sanding was "necessary". The only noticeable blemish on the plate was some metal splatter from the laser and I was able to clean most of that up using just my fingernail or a plastic razor blade. The biggest reason I chose to sand mine was because of the finger prints. The plates arrived with sort of a cloudy-mirror finish on them that makes finger prints very noticeable. You still get some prints with it sanded, but not nearly as much or as noticeable. I think a coarser grit sandpaper would help with this.

Heh we're complete opposites. I hate the Costar Stabs, but they were all I could get for my JD40.

The JD40 is great but it doesn't work with dvorak so I made my own 42%.  :thumb:

I'd love to see it next to a JD40 at some point!

Is there any special size caps on those 40% keyboards?

According to JD these are the modifiers:
Row 2: 1u Esc, 1u Del or Backspace
Row 3: 1.25u Tab, 1.75u Return or Enter
   Row 4: 1.75u Shift, 1.25u Shift, 1u Fn
   Row 4 (SA Row 3): 1.25u Ctrl, 1u Win or Del, 1u Alt; optional layout: 1.25u >., 1.25u ?/

7Bit put together a Round 5 40% Kit which uses Signature Plastic's SA profile. Since I'm a visual person, seeing an image is usually more helpful.

How do you guys like your 40% board for practical purposes?

I mean they look nice and compact and all that but the reason I skipped these is I have hard enough time adjusting to 60% so I thought 40% would be practically useless.  Can you guys type efficiently with these?

Just curious! Why is it so insanely cheap?

because we arent doing it to make money

so we purchased a ton of boards, and sold everything at cost ( a dollar or 2 is added to a couple bits just to cover ourselves against any issues)

really im a big fan of the project, wanted to support it and help get them out to people

about 15 of them will be shipping in the morning, so lots will start showing up soon

Anyone interested in selling theirs? i really want one but have no way of making it!

https://ctrlalt.io/store/items/jd40
Thank you! <3

My eyes are not misleading me, but thats $125 for a fully build JD40?!

that is correct, ther eis a bit of a lead time as we have about 40 + custom builds right now, but should be about 4 - 8 weeks max

all you will need is keycaps and a cable
Just curious! Why is it so insanely cheap?

because we arent doing it to make money

so we purchased a ton of boards, and sold everything at cost ( a dollar or 2 is added to a couple bits just to cover ourselves against any issues)

really im a big fan of the project, wanted to support it and help get them out to people

about 15 of them will be shipping in the morning, so lots will start showing up soon

Awesome, as the muppet i am i forgot to add the switch type so submitted a ticket :P

This is incredibly kind! And thank you for making me have a chance to get this board! Followed all threads about it but was sad that I couldn't get it (can't build keyboards so I couldn't joint the GB) but then [CTRL]ALT put up a complete build. My dream come true! :D now I just need to wait for my beauty to be build. :)

Edit: looking forward for the programming guide. Could be handy because I have never done it before :)

The JD40 is great but it doesn't work with dvorak so I made my own 42%.  :thumb:

I'd love to see it next to a JD40 at some point!

i really really want one of these

After the firmware is mostly final I'll try to put something together.   :D
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

I got an "on the go" cable that is mini to micro USB, and planned the JD40 layout for one-hand typing.  Then it was indeed plug and play.  A locking switch for the Fn layers helps a lot,  So do the arrow keys.

The steel base is too heavy, so I will make a plastic case for it.

I planned the layout for one-handed typing, including a locking switch for Fn.  Then I bought an "on the go" cable and it was then plug and play.

Kills battery life, however.
