Bought a desoldering station

I told myself the boards were getting out of hand, so I didn't need that camp225.  Spent $300 on a desoldering station... makes sense to me

PS: What did you get?? Need more details....also....this would really fit better in the making things subforum.

PPS: I've heard filco solder can be a nightmare to remove so be prepared and don't overheat the pcb.

I got the Hakko FR300 gun with the kit (stand, cleaning tools, and case)

We'll see on the Filco.  It's probably like my CM boards.  I think they use lead-free solder or something.  It's always sticky and blobby.  I've added flux in the past to help it flow, but I always get the best results from adding a touch of rosin core solder on it.  Probably just need to invest in better flux

The reds are so bad.  I can't imagine anyone would want them.  Super scratchy.  I suppose I could break down and lube them.  I've avoided lubing switches for 3 years now.

Yes, be very careful not to overheat it. You will run into big problems. I use a pretty low temp and take my time. I had just said elsewhere my Grandson whom is an EE with very high end equipment can desolder a 105-8 board in 25 minutes. Took me like 2-1/2 hours. This is why people will be sending them to you lol. Old decks are horrible. The solder goes right through the hole onto the front. Just be careful.

Noted.  I have desoldered two TKLs and a 60% just with a pen pump, so I have some experience.  Solder through the hole is the worst.  Hoping that won't be as much of an issue with this new equipment.

Well, I have to wait until Tuesday now.  The gun came with a 1mm tip.  Not really big enough for anything.  Ordered a 1.6mm tip.

The new tip came in.  1.6mm and it's perfect (well, you don't hear that every day). I got 10 switches out in roughly 45 seconds.  Amazeballs invention.   I'll have to see if that 1mm tip will work on LEDs.  Gotta go find some more stuff to desolder!

On a serious note, I'm super jealous. I'm going to spend a few hours desoldering boards, but this would be amazing. Just not sure if I should drop the $300 on one... how much is my time worth... hmmm...

I'm curious to hear how much you like the gun. Maybe I will just bite the bullet and get one. Desoldering switches from prototype boards would save me money on new switches.

That'd be great. I have 4 or 5 TKL-sized boards to get switches off, so saving a bunch of time would be awesome.

A simple heated desoldering iron has worked for me. It does tend to get clogged after a while and more frequent cleaning is probably warranted, but when it's working, it works quite well. I'm able to desolder switches and LEDs with it.

Do you need a separate soldering station to solder the stuff you've desoldered?

I have a separate Hakko fx888d soldering station.  You could use the desoldering gun to solder in a pinch, but you would need a different tip and it’s not really weighted right for precision.  It’s heavier in the back because of the pump and is a bit unruly for one handed use, at least for me.
