[SHIPPED] PCB Mount Clear Switches
« on: Mon, 01 October 2012, 15:55:59 »
Same as Demik's last GB, I'll set the max at 3k.

Price is 39c/ switch

Will close when it hits 3k or by Friday 10/05/12. PM me your orders. Shipping fee will be split between orders from manufacturer to me, then added to the shipping cost from me to you. I will only use small flat rate packages. No international, don't wanna deal with that.

If we order quick, I can opt for faster shipping, and it can get here by 10/05/12 for 22USD shipping on 3k switches.

Shipping is $5.35 I will be using a small flat rate box.

Since I am trying to do this very quickly, I hope you will all send payment 12 hours after the GB has ended. So please check the thread for updates.

Currently 5.1k in stock.

Btw, where are you sourcing these? Can you also run a GB for other switches at the same time? Like maybe MX greens, grey, blue, brown, and red?

Means there are two little pins on the bottom part of the housing to mount on PCB-mounted boards.

Where are these coming from? Mouser? I was always curious how low they would go for a larger quantity.

Their site only lists down to $0.73 per switch for a quantity of 500.

No, this is not mouser, this is from verical.com and they have a much larger quantity on stock than mouser, but clear is about the only interesting one I've ever seen on their site.

you can desolder the switches or use a tool(link below, Thanks Limmy) to pop of the switch top and just replace the stem/springs.

Nice, thanks for the info! Would this still apply to the CM Rapid though since it's plate mounted, or would I definitely just need to desolder the switches?

From what I can tell on my plate mount switches you will definitely have to desolder because the plate stops the pieces that hold the top on from being able to expand out releasing their grip.

Got a few questions...

Do Filco's use PCB Mount?  If not, what boards do?

I'm considering being a middle man between you, ekw, and international.  Feeling generous today...how do you feel about that?

Filco uses Plate, but you convert PCB to plate by trimming 2 plastic pins off the bottom of the housing.

Okay.  I believe I've seen pictures of people using nail clippers to trim the little tabs off, if I'm picturing the right thing...

This would require soldering for the Filco though, correct? Or does it require soldering either way?

Okay.  I'll do some research into the chances of botching either the PCB or switches on my first go...then decide if I want some switches.  I've soldered before, but never on such a small scale or on PCB's.

Clears are browns with black springs right?

If I'm starting with blacks, and I reuse the bottom, will I still have the tactile?

all switch housing is the same (well aside from the 2 plastic nubs pcb mounted switches have). you get the tactile part from the stem.

Clears are the same type of tactility like browns, but the bump is larger and you can really feel it. Sometimes when I type real fast browns I don't think they feel any different than reds to me. Also the feel of the switch comes from the stem so you can reuse the switch housing and only swap the stem if you want and you will have a completely new feel to your switch.

I guess you could call brown + black spring micro clears?

I haven't heard many good things about brown stems with black springs, apparently the tactile bump is less pronounced on the brown stem when compared to clear.  With a heavy spring supposedly brown stems feel like a scratchy linear switch and nothing more.

Ah okay, I see. That's much more exciting to know that you can leave the base. What's the advantage to resoldering the whole switch then?

When I hear people mention ghetto clears, what are they referring to?

Also, if this is crapping up your thread I'll edit them and create a new one for my questions... just so many people eager to answer my questions :p

Very true for me when I used them. You can feel the bump even less with a black spring under a brown stem.

Ah okay, I see. That's much more exciting to know that you can leave the base. What's the advantage to resoldering the whole switch then?

When I hear people mention ghetto clears, what are they referring to?

Also, if this is crapping up your thread I'll edit them and create a new one for my questions... just so many people eager to answer my questions :p

ghetto clears? never heard that name.

you use you don't mean ghetto greens?

also, if it's a filco you have to desolder.. just like any other board that has plate mounted switches.

Maybe its ergo clears, Idk I may be mixing things up with ghetto greens like you mentioned.

Wait, I thought you said with a Filco I could just keep the base and swap the stem and spring? No soldering required?

No. With a Filco you are going to need to desolder and solder.

The clips on the sides of a cherry mx switch need to be pried away from the base which cannot be done (safely) when there is a plate; there is no room for them to disengage.

People claim to have done it and even posted videos, but I highly doubt they could do an entire board without ruining a good number of switches. It is just playing a luck game where you hope the tabs don't snap off, you don't break away the solder points, you don't just chew up the switch while applying leverage, etc.
My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

No... I said you can reuse the switch bottoms so you don't have to cut the stabilizing feet on the pcb mounted switches.

Okay, I'm going to try and search for some pictures of video's of how to do this on a Filco, just so I 100% understand the process before committing to an order for these.  By the way, just got my first ever Filco in...all I can say is:

Ah okay, I see. That's much more exciting to know that you can leave the base. What's the advantage to resoldering the whole switch then?

Ohhh, Okay.

Thanks for the help, it's probably more an issue of me not knowing much about how it works as compared to you not being clear.

Like I said, I'm going to see if I can find a tutorial somewhere or at least a thread with pictures of some one swapping switches on a Filco.

Boo to no international :(
I'd happily mail-forward to international people. Switches are pretty light, so depending on the quantity, and if I feel like making a new box, it can be pretty cheap.

I have like 200+ clears right now, so I'm out. Still waiting on springs, though. I want a bunch of those.

While I wait a couple or twenty times I'll get on my WYSE set and moogle kit, that will keep me occupied.

Off topic...but is it just me or is this spacebar on the Filco way loud when bottoming out?  Damn, guess I need some of those O-Rings, or maybe I need to go post over in the key sticker GB.
