I suppose that this new version will be pcb mounted, like the old one. This allows infinite customizability and easy repairs.
update 23rd january 2017: This keyboard will be availabe in ANSI layout. The product launch is planned for Q2/2017.

Proven technology meets innovation
Auerbach, 5th January 2017 - CHERRY, the specialist for computer input devices, has unveiled the MX Board Silent at CES 2017. This new keyboard is based on the G80-3000, which has proven itself over the years to be precise as well as reliable. CHERRY combines this product with its new MX Silent switches to create a product that will keep keyboard noise in a hectic office space to an absolute minimum.
Combining G80-3000 with the latest MX technology
The G80-3000 has been one of the most popular mechanical keyboards on the market for decades, having become a true classic. Thanks to a purist feature set, a timeless design and its outstanding precision, the G80-3000 remains a bestseller. To continue its success, CHERRY updated this proven keyboard with the latest MX Silent technology. The result is a straightforward, high-end keyboard, which is ideally suited for even volume-sensitive environments such as large rooms or community offices, enabling silent keystrokes with CHERRYs patented noise reduction technology without giving up on its uncompromising writing performance. Also implemented is “N-Key Rollover” functionality, which allows up to 14 keys to be pressed simultaneously without “ghost” keypress effect.
MX Silent for minimal keyboard noise
The MX Silent-switches have a uniquely shaped rubber pad compared to conventional switches. The integrated 2-component stem reduces audible clicks at the bottom-out and top-out to a minimum. Instead of relying on third-party products, CHERRY relies on a self-developed, innovative solution that preserves the special properties of each individual switch. As with every other MX switch, these features include a sturdy housing made of plastic polymer, a precise spiral spring, and the unique Gold Crosspoint contact technology. This exclusive production process guarantees a precise release and a service life of over 50 million keystrokes.
MX Board Silent available in MX Red or MX Black
The MX Board Silent is offered in two versions, so the consumer can choose between two variants of the noise-reduced MX Silent switches. Both exhibit linear switching characteristics but differ in the required release force: 45 centinewtons for the MX Red Silent and for those who prefer a slightly higher resistance, 60 centinewtons for the MX Black Silent. Like all MX switches, the bounce is less than a millisecond, allowing for precise and instantaneous input.
The MX Board Silent is only available in ANSI layout and colours grey and black for an MSRP of $149. :thumb: :thumb:

So, MX Silent and in-switch diodes with a "14-key rollover" USB protocol.
I think it would have been nice if they had updated the case design also - there is quite a bit of empty space inside that and it uses a bit of desk space compared to modern keyboards.
I don't know how they count. The regular "boot" protocol for USB keyboards allows for 6 arbitrary keys + a bit for each 8 modifiers. In the community, we call that 6KRO because we count rollover of arbitrary keys.
-
Ugh, $149. I remember G80-3000 was €60 on Amazon.de a few years ago.

You can still find g80-3000 for €70 or even less.
I think that this new version will retail for €100

The MX Silent version of the Filco Majestouch 2 is only available in ANSI layout, while this Cherry keyboard will be in ISO.
-
Yeah, that's what I kinda figured.
I have a pair of the Filcos currently (one black, one white), and so don't really need a Cherry anyway, but I was curious.
-

Cherry profile keycaps.
Are they sourcing their caps from GMK now? Because that would be ironic.
-

PCB mount, Cherry stabs and presumably thick POM keycaps. You may not prefer this, but I most certainly do.
-
I find it difficult to believe this is ISO only unless it's some sort of limited edition. Cherry is huge in China and I can't see them giving that market up unless they're no longer pursuing the gamer market.
14KRO and NKRO do not belong in the same sentence. And WTF with only 14 anyway? I had an i-Rocks rubberdome at one point that had around 21/22KRO. And I'm pretty sure the QSenn DT35 - another rubberdome - had around 14KRO.
-
I see.
I don't think I have a preference one way or the other between PCB mount or plate mount. And I don't ever keep the stock keycaps of any keyboard; I mean, that's the whole point of MX switches: to be able to swap the keycaps with something better (i.e., tall and spherical).
Why are Cherry stabs preferable over Costar stabs?
(And dante is right, 14 != N)
-
Cherry stabs make swapping caps much more straightforward, and shouldn't ever grind against caps (something that's documented with Costar stabs).
-
And the benefit of this over a Filco Majestouch-2 Silent board is...?
Everything.
-

Interesting.
I get the very strong impression that the experts over on DT feel that Costar stabs are far superior to Cherry stabs, despite the "convenience" of not having to deal with inserts with Cherry stabilizers. Is this a YMMV kind of thing?
-
Unclipped Cherry stabs may feel a bit mushy to some, but the mod is well documented and quite straightforward. I don't see any benefits to Costar then.
There are many clone stabs floating around, though, and those are lower quality.

I'd say it is. With the right tuning, Cherry stabs can be quite snappy and feel pretty much just as responsive as Costar stabs. However, Costar stabs typically feel more snappy (as do Alps stabs) in comparison to Cherry, at least unmodified/stock stabs.
Costar:
+ Snappy and responsive feeling off the bat
- More rattly than Cherry stabs
- Finicky when it comes to changing caps
Cherry:
+ Hassle-free Cap removal for the most part (aside from those times when tight-fitting caps pull the wires out of the inserts)
- More mushy/less responsive compared to Costar off the bat
-/+ Not exactly as rattly as Costar, but still rattly
- Clones of Cherry stabs generally suck. I've seen some with textured sides, pretty much like it was meant to make the board feel scratchy
Both of them require a bit of tuning to get them to their best.
Costar is easier to optimally tune up using a lubricant grease to stop rattle pretty easily.
Cherry requires clipping of stabs (most of the time, with modern stabs), lubrication, and other mods to get them to their best
-
Alps did it first! /s

International eu layout is ansi?
Can we have a sound recording or some pictures?
Thanks

International eu layout is ansi?
Article numbers ending in EU are usually ANSI boards with the Euro glyph.
-
Such a shame for me that there's no TKL. Just can't go back to full size. Would snap one up!

I prefer Cherry stabilizers simply because they don't have that tick-tick-tick sound tapping across the space bar. Also they can feel as good or very close to as good as Costar; the problem is most OEM's don't take the time/effort to tune them properly.
Costar stabilizers never bothered me as far as putting on/taking off. I'm exactly sure what the issue people are having? The only time I would sweat bullets is trying to take keycaps off some obscure Alps board with some rare ultra thin wire configuration (ie: no replacements other than buying another board.) But even then I never screwed it up.
-
Once I tried a Cherry G80-3000 keyboard with blacks and the stabilized keys were the worst I've ever tried in a keyboard. Those keys sounded and felt like broken. It was totally unaceptable. I hope the Cherry stabilizers in my new Leopold FC900R do not feel at all like those in the G80.

They just released the MX Board 9.0 in Asia with (I think) MX Pinks along with standard options: https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/cherry-releases-mx-board-9-gaming-keyboard.html

Could someone explain to me why that is called an "ISO layout" board?

:)
Oh, nice!
-
Could someone explain to me why that is called an "ISO layout" board?
I received an email from cherry, where they said that international eu layout is iso.
To me is quite obviuous that if they are at CES, in the USA, they show to the public an ANSI keyboard to find some potential big buyers, also if they have decided to sell ISO keyboard first.

Layout (country or language)
US English with EURO symbol
Cherry name EU/US (G80-3494LTCEU-0) as ANSI.
DE/FR/CH and others in Eur countries as ISO.
-
Yeah, what Cherry calls "EU layout" is ANSI with a Euro currency symbol on the 5 key and that is what is shown on the product page. The rep' that mailed Giorgio must have been confused...
The G80-3494 existed already with regular Cherry MX Red switches - which has been confirmed to have 6KRO over USB. On Cherry's product page for the keyboard with silent switches, it says "up to 14 keys over USB". Hrmpf. I think we can safely say that it is the regular 6KRO USB protocol.
However, it also supports PS/2 - which supports NKRO. So you could use it with for instance Soarer's converter and get NKRO over USB that way.
-
Ah, okay.
Well, for someone like me who would swap out the stock keycaps for my own anyway, that board is simply an ANSI-104 board.
Thanks for the clarification.

Wow thats surprising, i bet they will make an ISO version at some point. One could just buy a standard switch G80-3000 in ISO and open the switch tops since its PCB mount unless theres something special about the Silent switch bottom housing.
-
For $150 (in USD is that correct?!) i'd rather buy a bunch of the switches and swap them into a old G80. Hell, at $150 thats more than Corsair boards with them and they are arguably better keyboards. Anyone know when you can buy the switches individually?
There is something strangely appealing about an old G80 with dampened linear switches, especially coming from a Alps guy.
-
They have them here https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2231
-
Too bad that the shipping rate from there is 70 USD for just a couple of switches, wtf! Shipping of an entire keyboard in a retail box costs less from them, despite having greater volume and weight. :))
-
And plate mount too. WTF.
Each pcb mount switch can be plate mounted, but not the opposite.
-
Contacting them solved the issue with the shipping cost in this instance. They were very quick to respond and hopefully the switches will be with me in a couple of days. :)
-
We will have to wait Q2 .

It's actually cheaper to buy a g80-3000 and replace the switches with their silent equivalent. No soldering involved. (I'm quite sure that the base of the switch isn't different from silent to standard reds/blacks).

That's a really good idea, and the end result is a batch of MX Red switches that you can resell and get nearly all the money you spent on the silent switches back.
-
Well, I bought an old G80-11800 with the much rarer thick PBT, so I quashed my small Cherry crave ;) No need for this anymore lol.

Well I fulfilled my Cherry crave by buying a G80-11800, got it today actually. Very happy spending $35 rather than $150, and I get thick PBT!
Also vintage MX Brown is wayy nicer than modern. Smoother and way less bumpy.

A silent MK? I guess, if you're stuck in a cubicle somewhere... Can't think of any other reason to take so much of the fun out of it, though.

I don't work in a quiet cubicle environment; I work in a room with five other dudes, noisy network switches, and oscillating tower fans, and my Pok3r with MX reds draws comments about how loud it is when I type on it. I've replaced it with a Pok3r with silent reds and nobody notices when I'm typing on it anymore.

PCB mount, Cherry stabs and presumably thick POM keycaps. You may not prefer this, but I most certainly do.
Same. I haven't tried the Filco Silent but since Filco is plate mounted then I would type on another organ instead of a keyboard.
I'd love the smoothness and the sound level of the Silent Reds without the plate singing in A.
I'm new so maybe there is an explanation in another thread but I don't understand why Cherry doesn't make TKL boards and this thread reminded me that Cherry makes affordable boards which I won't buy because I don't need/want the numpad.

That $149 price tag seems high to me, I'm curious if it'll drop once stock hits.
They could at least throw in doubleshot caps versus lasered caps.
Also I just can't get over all that wasted case space cherry uses on this style of board.

I'm not going to buy it, and about me asking it to cherry.... I think that I'm blacklisted :-D
I didn't even know that cherry had universal layout pcb, I suppose that this means that all the treaces are there, and that you need to desolder and solder again a couple of switches. If it is of any help, the pcb is the same of the g80-3494 n-key rollover that has been available since at least 5 years.

I don't even know if the keyboards have ever been available or not. To me it looks like a placeholder with the mrsp price. I've seen the silent version sold on HK sites for about $110, so I'm quite sure that the price will be lower. You must also consider that corsair sells a silent keyboard for $80, so I think that cherry could at least match that :-)
The black version traditionally has very thick pom keycaps, but letters are lasered - painted; the beige version has thin keycaps, at least this is true for usual g80-1800 and g80-3000.

They don't, in fact, in the earlier MX3000 models, that's why I'm curious to see if they thought about that, yet.

They didn't even think that they could shrink drastically their inventory by selling a keyboard that has legends with symbols only (no text) and by including in the same package many of the national variant keycaps.

If that's the same G80-3000 chassis as the old one with Blues they have a lot of nerve. It is extremely flimsy and makes a MagicForce feel like a more expensive product in comparison.

I just bought a G80-3000 silent from Provantage, who stopped carrying it right after I ordered it. It was just over $100 shipped. Maybe they thought that fulfilling my order was too much of a PITA, so they dropped it? My other keyboards have been mostly MX browns (Filco, Leopold, Das Keyboard, CM Quickfire), but I have had a Realforce and a Type Heaven. At first this thing felt really mushy and cheap and I did't like it at all, but after using it for a week it's really grown on me. The keys have a nice soft landing when you bottom them out. They don't have that "pop" that Topres do, but it's still a nice feeling. I use it in my office, so I like how quiet it is, although my coworkers never complained about my MX brown keyboards. The case is definitely cheap-feeling, but it reminds me of my old Apple EKII, and the POM keycaps have a nice soft feel to them. The one mod I had to make was replacing the space bar's spring with one from a clear switch. I tried a grey spring, but it made the space bar feel too stiff. With the stock red spring, it was too light and I double spaced too often. I think this board is a keeper, but I might consider replacing the caps with some PBT ones at some point, and I want to do something about the Num Lock and Caps Lock lights bleeding into the other indicator windows.
