Model M Mini needs repair
« on: Tue, 12 April 2011, 16:23:41 »
I just searched model m mini on taobao.com and found only one seller.

And this seller has sold all his stock but one which has a nonfunctional right arrow.

He sold functional ones for around 30 dollars and I guess he will let this one go for 10 dollars or something.

But the problem is how should I repair it? Is that a common problem with minis? Is it easy to fix?

It is potentially easy. If it's a bad spring or a misseated hammer, it's pretty easy, if you're willing to bolt mod it. If it's a bad trace, it is a little bit harder, but still not too bad, if you can get a conductive pen. But it would still require a bolt mod.

I would say it's worth it regardless. Given that broken/for parts/repair minis still go for about $100 on ebay, anyway. At least, that's what the last one went for, as I got outbid at $90.

Check out the bolt mod. If you do this in conjunction with trace repair using a conductive gel pen, you should be good to go.

It could be a bad controller-- in that case you can swap in the controller from a full size model M to fix it. Beaten up full size Model Ms, with perfectly good controllers, are cheap. Swapping the controller does not require the bolt mod.

See my sig for bolt mod info.
