IT'S DONE!!

Many thanks to everyone that responded

Over 3600 Responses.

Link to imgur album with outputs here

Results available as a CSV here

All the images and the (very messy) work in progress XLSX I used for some of the graphs are available as a zip here

Not mentioned in the imgur album, but possibly one of the more important bits is the top three manufacturers.
  • Vortex
  • Ducky
  • Leopold
Honourable mention to IBM that just missed out on a top 10 spot despite not having manufactured keyboards for over 25 years.

The top 3 for people that said they primarily used Geekhack was actually a little different:
  • Leopold
  • HHKB/PFU
  • Topre/Ducky (Joint)

Aaaand the bottom 3 (which was the same across all communities)

  • Razer
  • Corsair
  • Logitech

Other ways in which Geekhack differed from the other communities is that you generally spend more on keyboards, keysets and artisans (but you all knew that didn't you!!)

I may add more images to the album, I'll post here if I do, if you think of any interesting relationships or possible patterns in the data that you want to explore let me know and I'll see what I can do, or better yet, make the graphs yourself and I'll add them to the album (with attribution, of course)

And finally, congratulations to reddit user /u/Luneth12 winner of the idea23 resin 60% case from busgamer7394.

Post when survey was live
More
The survey is live!!

LINK

I think it should take a maximum of about 10 minutes to complete.

I have incorporated almost all the additional questions and suggestions that were made in the planning phase, thank you to everyone that helped out.

The survey will be closed on 3rd of June 21st of May at 11:59pm

The results will be made available shortly afterwards and I will work on presenting the data on the weeks following.

For a chance to win an idea23 low profile 60% resin case (like this one) you must enter only once, opt in and enter a valid email address before submitting the survey.  The winner will be randomly selected at the conclusion of the survey.

Original call for help compiling questions:
More

Hello! I'm a bit of a data analysis and visualisation nerd as well as a mechanical keyboard enthusiast. I thought it might be nice to do a survey of the community to see what people have, what people like, what people do etc.

I've been compiling questions that I, and other people would like answered on a google spreadsheet that can be commented upon:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1c-YmJVUo_usSCbnReZI6J7Dt47kdQHg66hxFSpSiFxw/edit?usp=sharing
At the moment there are quite a lot of questions, so the plan is to split them into high to low priority, and have the medium and low priority appear as an unenforced extension of the questionnaire.

What I would like from you guys is suggestions on what to ask and how to improve the questions I already have.

I'd like this to be as cross community as possible and will be posting similar information in other places to strike up interest. If anyone has any ideas who I'd have to talk to to get this promoted (pinned or whatever) when I've compiled the questions into a survey, let me know.

By the way, the capcha on this forum is terrible!!

For the communities I think you should remove discord or add slack. Really in the end both are areas to chat and members likely started out on either GH or Reddit before using them. Also there are multiple keyboard slacks and probably multiple discord chats so I don't think either belongs on the list but I guess it's up to you.

Thanks for the feedback thus far, I think it's close to being a very comprehensive list.  I just need to prioritise, rephrase some of them and make sure the selection options cover everything.

What will you do with this information ?
Lies, this is a marketing strat.

I'll make all the information available both open and free.  No bamboozle.

Someone's been reading my post history ;)

Unrelated, but it seems like a silly rule, what if you are a lurker that wants to buy/sell (I get the need to keep bots and spam out)

Of course you will be able to see the results.  There is no summary page upon submission because it includes a bit of optional personal information, plus I don't want people brigading or changing their choices depending on the in progress results.

I will be publishing the raw data upon the conclusion of the survey (One month from now, Saturday 3rd June) and will use some of my own data vis experience to analyse and present the data.

Exciting news! busgamer7394 has kindly offered to give away a 60% resin case to one lucky survey participant.  At the conclusion of the survey a random email address will be selected to receive a custom made idea23 low profile resin case.

It should look something like this:

But since these are sold he will work with you to create a new one.

Any previously submitted entry with an email address will be retroactively entered into the prize draw if you don't wish to be entered let me know. If you have already submitted your responses, but have not entered an email address let me know and I'll add you to the list (provided you can tell me something about your responses).

DO NOT ENTER ANOTHER RESPONSE IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A CHANCE AT WINNING THE CASE.

I've had a lot of suggestions for questions (that was the purpose of the original spreadsheet) and I've had loads more since releasing the survey.

I've made some small changes to existing questions, but you've got to draw the line somewhere

So we are 10 days in, we have already smashed my expectations in terms of responses with over 3000 so far.  However!  The number of geekhack users in the dataset is very low, and I believe not representative.  I know it is 10 minutes of your very important time, but please I ask anyone who hasn't taken part yet to fill it in and represent your community!

I don't know how representative this is of others, but I actually filled it out using my Reddit name, since I'm more active on there.

In other words, everyone is from Reddit? Yeah, that tends to be the case, I'd say that's pretty representative :p .

You know you could still fill out the survey and not enter the competition.

I am bringing the end date forward to the 21st as the number of responses has levelled off
