I see... I can be certain that 87 was the initial year unless someone busts out a 86 space saver

clickykeyboards.com lists every SSK they've sold. None are older than '87.

I read somewhere that IBM introduced the SSK to coincide with the PS/2 line of computers in 1987. That would make logical sense. PS/2 desktop systems were physically smaller than the PC, XT, or AT.

RSI prevention recipe:[/B] Kinesis Contoured, Colemak layout, touch typing, Contour Design Rollermouse,  Logitech TrackMan Wheel, Logitech m570 trackball, "workrave" break timer software, "awesome" window manager, tenkeyless boards, cherry browns, Wang 724 with "ghetto green" ALPS, standing desk and/or comfy adjustable chairs, stress reduction, computer time reduction.

Fun non-ergonomic things: bolt modded Model M Space Saving Keyboards with new springs, Kensington Expert Mouse v7, Unicomp Endurapro, Northgates

Looks like 1987.6.4 is the earliest SpaceSaver sold by clickykeyboards:

I had 3 from 1987, but sold the one to KB that he's referring to.  I will have to check the dates of my remaining two, but I believe they're both late 87.

Whatever date they are, I like them a lot :)

My CPA Bernie always did juggle the numbers.

Anyway I have the right to report you now for Grammer Naziisms.  Especially when I am the Anne Frank of keyboards.

Aw, at least get it right. The last post was a numeric harangue. This post is grammar nazi-ism, semantics.

Showed up in 1987 to coincide with either the PS/2 or 3151 terminal. Not sure which came first.

Hey, I have one from May of 1987.  Maybe that's the oldest one known?

Are you still liking yours, KillerBee?  I have ducky, filco, etc, but I always seem to return to my beige master!

I think by IBM Spacesaver he means IBM Model M Space Saving Keyboard, not the type of rubber dome keyboard Unicomp currently sells as the Mighty Mouse - the M13, IIRC.

I just remembered this thread.  After posting my summary of sales of SSKs a few days ago, I realized that one of the very recent eBay sales was for the earliest known SSK, 1987.5.13, beating MissleMike's by 16 days and selling for a very cheap $75.

How could I have missed this thread?

Anyway, I also have a 1392980 made 29 May 1987. Same day as MissileMike's board. Based on the ID No I assume Mike's 2980 is a bit older.

I like the IBM Space SAVING keyboards with functional drainage channels myself.

Makes me feel Industrious.
Show Image

Oh, part number 41G3600.  The one that just recently sold on eBay was a 1395682.  So there's two different models of the Industrial SSKs.  Yours is a Lexmark, while the 1395682 (at least the one sold by Clickykeyboards) is a "full IBM".  Yeah, I know, made at the same place, but I still prefer keyboards without the word "Lexmark" printed anyplace.  Regardless, would gladly take either.  How much you selling your Industrial Mini for again?  I'd really be interested in a package deal of your Industrial and your Bernie Madoff special.  They seem to be two of the rarest Minis.

BTW, due to you and ch_123 pointing out the incorrect use of the term "space saver" by many of us, I've been doing my best to avoid that term, and calling it by it's proper name, "Space Saving Keyboard" or SSK for short.
