Sweet :)

You're really becoming a one stop shop now!
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Hey sherry, You should also say that you can mix the two lubes.

You're really becoming a one stop shop now!

I have been wanting to get these.  I wanted everything you need to build a keyboard including keycaps as we do sell cusotm keyboards.

We are just missing a few more things like Cherry and Costar stabilizers!

Hey sherry, You should also say that you can mix the two lubes.

The lubes are already pre-mixed.

Well I was meaning more like contents, etc. Is it the same lube?

Basically, the previous package was 2 separate items: oil and lubrication.  Now, mkawa came up with a recipe to mix them.   It feels like youre typing on a cloud of clouds.

It works real well on blacks, clears, and reds.  (Thick for clears and thin for blacks and reds)

Also previously, mkawa suggested people to mix the oil and lubrication, and people can mix according to how they like it.  It's all premixed now which makes it a lot easier.

We are just trying to be your one-stop shop for a BYOKBD store.  The shipping was inefficient previously, but it should be a lot better now for people who are looking to buy switches, stickers, or springs.

Is it possible to get an idea of how much stock you have so I know how fast I need to purchase these kits before they sell out? :)

So I would be buying this for mx clears and I was wondering, I would need the thick lube obviously. But as far as what I should lube with this, can I do the sliders and springs both, or should this (thick) not be used on springs? Thanks :)

Might be a dumb question, how do we lube the switches ? Is there instructions to do so ?
I'm planning to get some to lube my switches.

It's really hard to say since I did the other mods but overall I like it. Will be able to tell more next week when I get back to work.

But do recommend the lube kits to anyone interested in lube, very well packaged and comes with multiple sizes of syringe tips etc.

cleaned it up tho, and its really nice.

the tools are nice, but do you have anything to get inside of the stem where it meets the spring?

First time I spilled it, I losened the cap, forgot it was only loosened, tried to squirt some out, applied force, and the tip and a lot of lube spilled onto the board.
Second time, I got the head on, but when I went to squeeze, I couldnt see when it came out so a bunch spilled

not yet. Opened it up to lube just the springs and some stabs. Got through a set of stabs and 2 switches. My binder clip switch opener decided to not work after a couple switches on my pcb mounted g80 so I didn't get to lube anything except for the spacebar.

These are meant for springs.  We have not really tried these on stabilizers yet.

Thick lube is made for tactile switches where as thin lube is made for linear switches.

Thick lube is made for tactile switches where as thin lube is made for linear switches.

So either would work w topre then?

Yeah, either works.  Mkawa please chime in!  He tested them.  I'll send him a message.

Thank you! I think I read in another post he recommended thick.

FOR MX SWITCHES:

i would not lube where the spring touches the cap of the stem. there is no wear there. the spring also does not touch the stem in a typical actuation, i wouldn't bother with that either. in fact, the only place i recommend lub is the either the slider or the housing side of the points at which the slider touches the housing. for linear switches, i recommend lubricating the front of the slider as well, the tendrils that actuate the gold crosspoints (they are lubed from the factory but with a silicone lube that just does not last long enough or provide the lubridicity for really smooth actuation), and the arc-face of a linear switch. i do not recommend lube anywhere else in an MX switch.

FOR TOPRE SWITCHES:

for a topre spring, you want to lube in a circle around the slider. use a very thick lube (the thick formula works reasonably well). the idea is to attempt to fill the gaps between the slider faces. this will _increase_ the resistance of the slider, but decrease the noise in that resistance w/rt to displacement. it will feel stiffer but smoother.

there is one more place to lube a topre switch, but it must be done BEFORE the previous step. using a very thin lube and a small gauge needle, insert several drops into the slider. the goal is to get the lube to migrate to the PCB and elastomers. the reason to do this is to increase the seal between the elastomer bottom faces and the PCB. in my testing i've seen a slight difference between the elastomer membrane of a 55g topre switch and an unlubricated elastomer. it's very slight, but the tactile bump gets a little bit of a boost from the improved seal between the elastomer edges and the pcb.

the sliders make the most dramatic difference in a topre switch. for those, only thick formula makes any difference at all, and again, it increases the force required to actuate the switch but makes that force curve smoother. if you don't want that, don't lube your topre switches. i haven't found any other way to affect the action of a topre switch with lubricant.

Is that what mkawa means?? That's showing just lubing the sides, which is what I did, but with thick lube because that's what was recommended at the time but now it seems like maybe thing is?? I'm so confused.

Ok so your basically saying the lube needs to go between the round shaft and the switch housing right?

I believe realforce may come lubed like that on some keys...make sense now.

That's only one part of his lubing process. Apparently, it's supposed to be done after this step:

Hopefully soon, I have a board I am putting together soon that is going to need the thick lube and 67g springs(which are still in stock but I am scared they might sell out by the time thick is back in stock)  :blank:

Yeah, I was stupid and didn't place my order, and by the time I went back both the 62g limited and thick lube were our of stock.

no, i think there's something misunderstanding here. i would generally do a one step lubing on a 55g topre switch. i would just lube the slider as illustrated and then stop. if you have lighter switches, you FIRST want to get a bit of THIN lube onto the elastomer under the slider. it's a huge pita and i don't think there's really enough tactile difference to make it worth it, but it does feel a bit better for what it's worth. THEN you lube the slider as it was lubed from the factory (circle around the slider). always do that last.

a skosh is to be taken as less than measurement tolerance.

never ever? 65 g better not sell out, I'm thinking of shifting to something heavier in the far future

better get em while they are hot

well I do need more lube...and I forgot to get a GH key last time...........

descicions descisions desccisons

I've put the note about  the geekhack key a few different orders now and nothing... :(

the one time I bought stuff from sherry(lube, springs, puller) I forgot to put the GH key note but I did get a hand written thank you note....

what the crap.....I've bought all sorts of stuff I never got a note!! and I've put comments in the comment box every time

It might have been because I spammed sherry about lube for 2 weeks before the lube was released, or sherry was feeling merry. Anyways I still have the note  :-*

As these haven't shown up on Originative yet (no rush), can I request that you post here when they are available? That way those of us waiting for the thick lubes will get a push/email notification about it, instead of obsessively checking the website  :-)

Thanks!

(Why did http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51182.50 get locked?)

Is this thick kit also recommended for use on stabilizers, or is something else more appropriate (better / just as good but cheaper)?

You could use Superlube on the stabilizers.

I used Krytox GPL 201 since I had it on hand, but most lubes will have similar effects if you don't overdo it as far as stabilizers go.

Yep, Krytox is King so instead of waiting for Sherryton to do anything I went and bought 3 injection kits from i3oiler.  Why you might ask, simply because i3oiler STILL accepts Paypal payments with no issues or troubles.  That is why I now have to shop at his place due to Sherryton's 'meanness' towards not accepting Paypal payments anymore (and I have never caused any call-backs on him ever).

Just some people change their payment system on a continuing basis which is always suspect and strange to say the least.  Whilst i3oiler is rock solid 100% reliable and just shipped all my goods 3 hours after payment - always been a star performer when distributing his gear to anyone all over the globe  :thumb: .

Sorry to spruik someone else here but Sherryton has let me down major league by dropping all Paypal payments and it has to be said  >:( .

Maybe because the grease component is more expensive than the oil component? Or maybe it's a huge conspiracy! Down with the Ming!

Things are always more expensive through a reseller they have to pay the website bills, etc.

That doesn't explain why thin and thick at techkeys is way cheaper than extra thick at techkeys

Extra thick lube requires more thick grease (I assume +25%) like GPL-206 or even GPL-207 so it should be more expensive.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the use for extra thick lube? I thought thin was for linear switches, thick was for tactile. Is extra thick for stabilizers or something?

My understanding is that extra thick can actually increase the tactility of switches by applying it to the stem arms, increasing stiction.

Yes, since it's very thick, you can use it for Costa stabilizers (Cherry stabilizers may require thin formula) IMO, extra thick formula should be used for very heavy linear (MX Black, Red + Spring >= 100g) or tactile with heavy spring (stock Clear, Dark Grey...) while thick formula should be used for normal linear (stock MX Black, Red...) and thin formula for tactile with light spring (Brown, Ergo Clear...).

FWIW, I used thick + 65g springs for my Ergo Clears and they came out great.

A tiny amount of oil, not a grease/oil mix.

Well, it's subjective. I love vintage blues. However, I think they feel even better with 60g springs and a little bit on GPL 103 on the sliders and the tips of the legs. It dampens the click a little bit, but the tactile feel is still there - just much smoother than before.

Clicky switches are VERY easy to mess-up if not careful or not using the right kind of lubricant in the right places.  You can kill the click or make it very inconsistent from switch to switch.  I'd say unless you want to experiment with a sample few switches for a while and use the absolutely tiniest amounts of lubricants, it's not worth lubricating Blues.  I just did a batch of 100 Greens and spent some time experimenting, and while the end result was nice, I used tiny amounts of lube, with a lamp shining on my workspace so I could see the exactly where I placed the lubricant, glinting on the switch, and it was basically like watch repair tiny-scale work.  Thin lube would be what I'd use for Clicky switches.
