Someone that has an spare 1.75u shift? I'd take any color, any type of legend, any material, as long as it is in Cherry profile, if you want to overwhelm me offer me a pair with its matching 2.25u shift.

originative has some on his site if you are not opposed to buying one:
https://www.originativeco.com/products/dolch-1-75u-shift

Of course not at all, thank you for the reference. Wonderful.

I might add some color (CMYK) to it but we'll see

Hi Elth, could you please post pics of the areas on the plastic case you had to cut/file down to acommodate Leeku's plate/PCB?

I went in not knowing that the case needed to be cut, so pretty much everything is done except that.
The keyboard is currently at work so I can't snap any pictures right now, but don't be discouraged after finding out you need to modify the top case for it all to fit.

I've circled the areas on the plate that interfere with the top case; the cuts are very small except for the piece in between the F-row and number row. Also, I'm not 100% on the spot above the Esc and the spot below where the 3 indicator LED's are, but when you try to assemble you'll see if it needs to be cut

Show Image

Thanks Elth, I've identified the same 7 points - that was the easy bit. What I'm struggling with is gauging/measuring how much of plastic from each section needs to be removed. I thought I'd just go for it & started filing the left arrow key section but it was so slow, imprecise and messy that I just gave up. Maybe I'm not using the right tools.

On top of that, I'm not sure how the cable is supposed to be routed as there doesn't seem to be enough space left inside the case (unless the preexisting USB-mini socket can somehow be repositioned, or there's a daughterboard/other parts I'm either missing or unaware of).

It's frustrating to be stuck at this stage as all the electronics work has been done.

What I did to measure was place the top case on the plate (this was before anything was soldered) and used a marker to mark how much plastic I needed to remove.  I then used a utility knife to cut the plastic and then gently broke off the piece with a pair of pliers. You could also use a dremel if you have one, but I would work slow with that as well.

Picture credit to madhias (few pages back in this thread)

As far as the USB cable, if you're direct soldering to the board (which it sounds like you're doing), I ran the cable on the underside of the PCB and there is plenty of room. Basically run the wires from the underside of the pcb and solder them on the top. You can also use the small hole above F7 to secure the USB cable with a zip tie; just helps to reduce the risk of accidentally pulling the cable out.

Hope this helps.

shwitches are pcb mounted, but you can't open them, because they have a sort of bezel that needs to be removed manually with a knife or something similar

Just some considerations about the size of this fantastic keyboard.

g80-1800
Dimensions (product):
approx. 405 x 180 x 44 mm

g80-3000
Dimensions (product):
approx. 470 x 195 x 44 mm

That's a difference of 65mm or 2.55 inches, which is a lot!!

If the bezel of the g80-1800 was more modern and smaller (let's say as big as the novatouch), the g80-1800 could measure only 380mm!! Which is a fantastic result considering that a tkl measures about 360mm

novatouch
approx. 359 x 39 x 138 mm

pok3r
approx. 292 x 103 x 38mm

I've come to realise that I like white backlighting.

And this picture only serves to reinforce that liking :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

g80-1800, temporarily with lasered keys, while waiting for gmk beige doubleshots....

Spring swapped with sprit 50gr springs... The uniqey clips precompress the spring, so the switch becomed heavier; to better approximate mx reds I used some lighter springs, which makes them almost indistinguable from cherry mx reds (wich are a little bit heavier, we are talking about a couple of grams). I lubed only the base of the spring by dipping them in krytox oil (from sprit too).

Completely silenced with gmk uniqey clips. Oh, the joy!!!!!

g80-1800, temporarily with lasered keys, while waiting for gmk beige doubleshots....

It looks great, congratulations Giorgio. Even with lasered key caps the tuxedo combination rocks.

My two french Dolch, they are my dreams come true...
Note that one is from a Dolch Pac 586, the other one from a Dolch Pac 486.
The newer 586 keyboard has turquoise cord plug! Never seen this color before!

Maybe you want to show your support for modern 1800 layout, with gmk Olivetti?
