You will need to buy a standard 1800 keyboard and either swap the switches or the stems. I don't recall ever seeing G80-1800 keyboard with anything other than mx Black (with the exception of Skidata which had mx clear) (11800 and 11900 were made with MX brown, but they're not true 1800 layout and the keycaps are not totally compatible due to the 2u right shift.

blues and blacks, I only saw those versions. Opening the switches and replacing the springs is very fast though. I've just ordered the new cherry silent switches for my g80-1800
Didn't Dolch come with Blues sometimes?

Yea, though for the actual part number G80-1800, I think this only has MX blacks. Different switches usually have part number variations,

1804 - clears (or blacks)

1838 - browns (vintage)
1854 HAF - blacks

Big facepalm moment, I totally forgot about Dolch (and from someone who owns a Dolch Pac keyboard, no less!).

Yes the Dolch Pac boards did indeed come with MX Blues and also a single MX Green switch under the spacebar.

Shameless Dolch Pac plug:

Duuuuuuude, how did you get an ISO one? The one that came with my PAC is ANSI :(
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Lucked out with a Deskthority Classified listing  :p

I'll probably convert it with a Leeku PCB and bring it to the next meetup  ;)

I still need one of those with a plate. I've got a mint G81-1800 case with UK doubleshots that needs to be used.

Still works though! I'm not converting mine, I love the old internals. NKRO is overrated ;)

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not throwing away the OG Dolch Pac internals, I'll keep it around for nostalgia's sake. Also because I don't come across UK version of the Pac very often so it's unique  :thumb:

My first vintage Cherry!

Cherry G80-1800HFU with vintage Blues. Feels great and in pretty decent shape. Just ordered some adapters to hook this thing up, and am going to give the keycaps & housing a cleaning!

First thing I did was plop some CMYK on this bad boy, looks great! Excuse the potato, was excited when it came in.  :p

Nice - the keycaps on the earlier G80-1800's are much nicer than the newer ones. (Recently picked up a 1800 and swapped the modern MX blacks for blues - next up will be some nicer caps.)  :)

I have a dolch pac case + leeku pcb that I still need to build. I finally got to see and touch a G80 1800 at the Portland Meetup a few months ago. I see that the G80 1800 is still actually available new. Is there some reason why the older ones are preferred over these new ones? Is it the keycap quality?

It depends on what you're looking for. I thought the keycaps felt good compared to other stock keycaps, but they are etched or lasered. You notice the patterns slightly under your fingers. If you're looking for a vintage look, they don't have it. They're grey, not warm. I do think that color looks good on the case, but you can probably find a cheaper deal on an old G80-1800 case if you're planning to switch out the PCB. Typing on a stock, PCB mounted G80-1800 feels terrible. There's so much flex.

This is what the new ones look like

I figured the keycaps would be lasered. I watched a Linus Tech Tips video in which they showed some machine just engraving all the keycaps while already on the board.

I'd ideally love to find an old G80 18XX, but I actually have never seen one on eBay haha. I've seen plenty MY versions though. I'll see if I can finish the Dolch this weekend and I'll be able to post a photo up here.

I've read a number of places that you can put a Leeku MX1800 PCB into the G81-1800 (MY) case. I just purchased one myself for my next build. But if you put out a classifieds thread or post on MechMarket, you will find one in a short while. That's how I got my case.

You have to make some notches on the top half of the case to fit the Leeku MX1800 plate into the case. I did that today and it took some hours with a file and knife.

I really like them. They feel a bit like lubed switches, without the mushiness. I have tried MX Red, MX Black and Gateron Yellow. I prefer the yellows, but only by a small margin over MX Red. I think it's a much bigger deal if the stabilizers are mushy or rattly.

Stock G80-1800 is just about one of the worst typing experience you can get, lots of flex, PCB sometimes shift around a little bit as you type, scratchy MX Blacks (at least the ones made in the noughties and 2010s, earlier ones have a chance of having vintage blacks.

Also, new 1800 keyboards come with 1u bottom rows and offset stem 6u caps, which for me is a slightly less desirable layout for a 1800 (don't mind it too much personally, but it does take a period of adjustment when I switch between keyboards with and without this bottom row arrangement)

So I just got the Din5-to-PS2 and PS2-to-USB adapters, and gave the 1800 a cleaning, and it works great!

"PgDn" and "Scroll Lock" seem to have some loose solder joints (they don't register 100% of the time), so I'll remedy that.

I need to adjust to the overall layout, but I love having the numpad in a compact footprint!

There were also early iso-de (QWERTZ) Raptor Gaming K1 with Cherry MX browns and DS keycaps. AFAIR the K1 was released in 2005 and only some of the very first had browns. To my knowledge these all were QWERTZ. I know this for sure because I have a K1 with browns laying around somewhere. AFAIK there also is the Cherry "HUMUS" (G80-1863HUMUS-2) with browns.

HUMUS-2 also had MX Blacks...but with the WnV edition the real showstopper is the original Cherry Corp red Esc key (that once sold for $250 here on geekhack and is ripster's favorite story about keycap appreciation) and the WnV keys.

I'm assuming it's just a differently coloured version of the Raptor K1 since the USB Hub at the back looks identical? (even comes with the switch blockers)

Cool board nonetheless, as a whole I think I still prefer the Raptor K1 due to the glow in the dark keycaps but that's personal preference  :))

If it's for the L3, contact kin25 who's running the TX1800v2 GB directly. I got a plate and PCB for Cherry G80-1800 case sent immediately. Look at the plate options in the thread.

Don't think I would consider 1u bot row 'top tier'  :p
I've never done it before, but I'm pretty sure I'm good at it

Btw are other 1800 layout boards allowed here, too?

I consider it top tier too!

While the 1.5 bottom row is more visually "classic", in practice, I actually find it uncomfortable for CAD work. I tap/hold control, shift, and alt constantly w/my pinky, ring and middle fingers, respectively. So the "classic" layout makes for a cramped hand pretty quickly. I imagine the 1u version being much more comfortable for my application.

I also like the fact that your more modern layout enables the use for command shortcuts on MacOS.  :D

On my Model M I mapped Caps to Ctrl, Ctrl to Option and Alt to Command. Works for me
