You just need a semi-decent camera (it doesn't have to be over $1000 ~ mine's not that great either), a tripod, your choice in lighting (preferably bright), point, set a timer/delay on the shutter, and you're good to go!

I don't even think "nice" photos have to necessarily be super high resolution or perfectly focused ~ Just needs to be of your own visual style, not major potato, and people will come to appreciate and enjoy them!!! Also, lots and lots of practice! I don't consider myself a good photographer in any means but even what I can do now, didn't come straight away :P
