1. DETAILS
Hello I'm Rik - here is the Rikia. Rikia is an Alice style (compatible with existing USB-C Alice PCBs and plates) board designed at the request of a good friend to soothe the pain from a certain failed groupbuy he bought into. The board is top mount and consists of a PC top with either copper or aluminum bottom.

I never intended to offer this board to the public – and I’m still undecided given the cost – but a lot of people have requested it and so I am gauging interest in a public sale. It’s over 10lbs completed. Almost all of that being the absolutely massive slab of copper on the bottom. Exotic materials + low run production is not a recipe for affordable boards, but if enough people love this design I am happy to run it.

Copper (and all metal) prices have risen exorbitantly in the past two years. I designed this board as an homage to the Alice based on the preferences of a friend expecting to pay insane prices for his own vision. It was not designed to be produced efficiently or economically. The price here in the IC reflects this. If there is huge interest in the board I might consider doing a less limited run, but I’m not optimistic in that being feasible.

Kneedeep and I have already been in talks to do a limited-edition patina of the copper or aluminum. We’re thinking 5 pieces to be sold alongside the GB.

Quote

No design will ever be sold without first being prototyped and having it on hand.
I understand that not all boards can function this way and that sometimes the designer cannot afford this route, but it’s a personal belief of mine that ICs should have prototypes long before moving to GB.

2. CURRENT STATUS

I have the prototype on hand it is excellent and I am very satisfied with the quality. The wrist rest felt a little lacking in comparison to the board so I have designed an updated wrist rest with matching weight in a similar aesthetic to the bottom of the board.

2.16 -

I've gone ahead and ordered some aluminum tops, aluminum bottoms (ano and e-white versions) along with more PC tops, a redesigned matching wrist rest with copper weight to try out some new configs.

I'll be sure to post when I receive them and narrow down config options.

Hotswap is also being prototyped by Mechlovin and will be offered if the timeline works out.

Obby for igniting the desire to design this and funding the entire prototype himself. This board wouldn’t exist without you!

I'm thinking e-white would be nice? But I could also just keep it simple and go black. Open to suggestion on the alu.

So nice, Rik. I understand why you'd choose to do a smaller run - given the obvious risks... but I hope you'll find a way to produce more units. I think this is a winner.

hello it is 2022 there is absolutely no reason not to be using a custom pcb and daughterboard for a keyboard that expensive

Except, you know, availability of PCBs and future proofing a very expensive product so people can easily acquire PCBs 3-5 years down the line instead of letting the keyboard rot because they can't find a custom PCB anymore...

So nice, Rik. I understand why you'd choose to do a smaller run - given the obvious risks... but I hope you'll find a way to produce more units. I think this is a winner.

Thank you so much Vis! I really wish this could be the inexpensive you know what Alice replacement we all need it to be, but it frankly wasn't designed to be that. I could cut corners and redesign the top and bottom to be easier to machine, but then it would lose some of the magic. That's a lot of the reason why I wasn't convinced of bringing this to GB to begin with. But I got so much response I thought I should at least try to offer something.

Definitely in.  Board looks great, copper gud.  Kinda hard to tell from the photos but I assume the PC top has threaded inserts?  Any coatings on the copper bottom/plate?  Or is it raw?

Bottom is coated! Raw would start to show oils and wear almost immediately otherwise.

I considered doing inserts - both helicoil and threaded inserts - but I chose not to for this design.

On my other board (Serpent65) due to the compression forces from the gasket mount the PC takes a considerable amount of strain when assembling the board.

However, on the Rikia because it is top mount and the bottom is SO much more mass than the top - the threads really don't do a whole lot. The base of the board is extremely stable and the top just slide on. The screws don't do anything to hold it together if I'm honest it could be used pressure fit with half as many screws but I like the aesthetic of the 8 bottom holes.

:p will you be purchasing your own CNC machines with GB funds?  :p

I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any CNC, espresso or icecream machines.

Board looks great and I like that it will be using existing and available plates and PCBs. Means we could manage the cost a bit and not have to grab an extra plate or PCB immediately.

Hoping interest in the PC/copper increases so you might be able to provide more favourable pricing.

I’ve been lurking and following the Rukia GB since it ran. I had to pass on it due to my lack of soldering experience. I even studied up on the Dune stuff for extras and watched the Discord server. I still hold little hope in that board but I’m glad that a good alternative has come up.

Quick update -

I am genuinely shocked at the feedback (good and bad I love the memeing keep it coming)

I've gone ahead and ordered some aluminum tops, aluminum bottoms (ano and e-white versions) along with more PC tops, a redesigned matching wrist rest with copper weight to try out some new configs.

I'll be sure to post when I receive them and narrow down config options.

Considering this is clearly a derivative of the Amano open source project files (https://github.com/h40io/Amano) have you contemplated giving credit to this project or informing community members and potential customers as to whether or not plate files, carrying case, wrist rest, or other components will be directly compatible?

If so, why not? I see this as a clear benefit to the community and a primary motivation of the project.

So let me get this straight you are complaining about a board that copied another board that was a copy of another board and you are sitting here trying to claim it was your design that was ripped off? Do you have rights to all alice style boards just because you also made a copy of one? I am confused what you are trying to get at with a board that has been replicated numerous amounts of times and how this one is any different.

I'll address your points in order.
1. Considering this is clearly a derivative of the Amano open source project files (https://github.com/h40io/Amano) have you contemplated giving credit to this project
Looking past the hilarious irony here - my answer is no - given that it is not a derivative of your project (which is in itself a derivative of the Alice. am I in the Twilight Zone?!)

2. informing community members and potential customers as to whether or not plate files, carrying case, wrist rest, or other components will be directly compatible
Again - no. None of your accessories (save for the publicly available Mechlovin PCB) will fit the Rikia. Again - they. are. not. the. same. The boards share two similarities - the Alice plate and the Mechlovin PCB. Neither of which are yours? I will say it for a third time - aside from the PCB and plate there is no similarity between our boards.

I really am sorry this had to happen. In fact - I was excited to mention your project in my IC when you requested it. I'm all for supporting fellow designers and I see absolutely no crossover in market between Amano and Rikia.
Then I was given screenshots from friends where you slandered me on Discord.
After that I chose to not engage with you further, but it appears your obsessive need to stir drama and air dirty laundry has followed us to yet another platform. I wish you the best with your future projects.

I needn't substantiate my claims, and anything interpreted as slander is of course false. I appreciate the thoughtful consideration.

Glad to see more Alice cases out in the world!

don't support this guy and don't be nice. it allows people like h40 to feel right or accomplished. h40, you suck. You must be fully delusional to come in here and claim your open source project is being infringed when it is a copy of an Alice (which is open sourced) which is derived from an em7 (which isn't open source.)

h40, I don't wish you luck. I wish you a reality check. Stop being a ****ty person in the community.

I believe it's a bit scummy to accuse someone of stealing your work (which also implies they would take something non-commercial for commercial use) without having any evidence and then decide you don't need to explain more where your accusations come from. How are we to understand your issue with this project or believe that your intention is actually to show that some fault has occured when you claim there is no reason to show any evidence/information?

If there really is evidence the Rikia is built upon the Amano source files that would be an issue, but so far it seems this is not the case and on a personal note it looks more like a jealous attack vs. a substantiated claim. I believe you should substantiate your claim or retract your accusations, otherwise it's clear you're not here for actual discourse.

I'm sorry. I think I'm letting my ego get in the way because I have spent so much time on this project and these files.

I understand the irony to some degree, and I obviously lay no claim to the original Alice layout and boards. You make good points there.

I wish you well and good luck with IC and GB.

You got a source on the og tgr alice files? Last ive checked around, its the stacked acrylic case files that were open sourced, Not the alu case files. Not trying to stir anything just wanna make sure if ive been mistaken on the fact of that.

rolling back through this thread cause i was thinking about it for some reason, the TGR alice was never open sourced unless it was done so relatively recently. i feel like that's something that would pop up on my radar. some other TGRs were open source for a time, notably jane v1, but sam has removed most links to the files.

there have been various open source alice projects over the years, however.

talking about that. it's not a GitHub repo but I had to do a bit of looking back to find it. It's a PCB layout file, a stacked acrylic case file, and a plate file from yuktsi back in late Sept 2018 that i was referencing to.
