What's up with these Topre housings?

I imported this board recently (Realforce 87U) and it has these weird housings I haven't seen before. This is probably the 10th topre board I've had in my possession.
What's the point of these?

Interesting. Apparently, these housings can be installed only in one direction.

Right? This board is also silenced even though it has black sliders. I had always heard Realforce boards that were silenced always had purple sliders and this was true for myself up until I found this.

Are they factory silenced or do they have aftermarket silencing rings on them? Probably the only way to know for sure is to measure the stem height with some calipers and compare that to the height of a purple slider.
