How did you know I was spending a lot on keyboards?! It is nice to know that I am not the only one spending too much money on keyboards. I got obsessed with the model M very quickly. It started when I ran a google search for linux keyboard. Unicomp was basically all I came up with. I got the classic 101, no Windows keys thank you, linux version with Caps Lock, Ctrl and Esc, ~ keys switched. I now own several from Unicomp, and the original from clickykeyboards.
Woohoo first Post I just bought a HHKB Pro2 and waiting for my brand new model M to come in the mail.
i got all my info from this website so i figure what the heck might as well join. :)

there is another option, young padowan, SPAM LESS LURK LESS
when can i start posting on classifieds?dude come on, it's in OP.
First off, welcome to the world of keyboards. There are two things you will discover quite shortly about keyboards and keyboarding related accessories: first, they are a moneypit. Your money? all gone. Second, they are awesome; you will be poor but happy.
OK, LOGISTICS: you are currently a JUNIOR CLICKER. That means you can view nearly all of the forums, and post replies, including attachments and videos, in every forum. There are a couple forums you can't see, but no worries, they're a bit like spamalot; they are silly places where only silly things are done. At some point (currently50 10060 posts, but subject to change without notice), you will join the ranks of the CLICK AND CLACKER, soldiers of fortune who are allowed to submit NEW topics to the classifieds and group buy forums.
HOWEVER: do not think that you should simply spam your way up the clacker ladder. Your keyboard, as you will soon learn, is a refined tool only meant for the purest of thoughts. If ye spam, we will delete. Instead, have fun, ask questions, comment on demik's flatulence, etc. in short, LURK LESS! we welcome your input.
SO THEN: Welcome to geekhack! Have fun clacking! (and sorry about your wallet :D)

Is there a cure for the "spend all money on keyboards" syndrome?
My doctor couldn't diagnose the problem.

you only have to spend all money until you have cool stuff you can start trading for :)
Hi guys i just recently started browsing this forum frequently on wednesday after the arrival of my topre 104u from PCCG and i'm still getting used to all these short forms of communication. :)
But nonetheless, i'm happy to be here with my fellow (poor) keycap nerds :D
~~~YAAAAAYYY~~~~~
Welcome to Geekhack!
There are not that many places selling mechanical keyboards in Australia, at least not a reasonable range of them. Lucky we have PCCG here in Melbourne :)
60 post, nice ruleLol, I take it you want to sell/buy/trade something...?
Damn, want to buy some black side-printed ISO keys...guess i reach 60 posts at some point :>
Well I think this is awfully silly because I have bought from people here before. Looks like I must needlessly spam just so I can use this as such. Must I spam your site or would a donation due you proper? *TLDR: SPAMMING*Sure make checks payable to SmallFry please!
Hello GEEKHACK
I'm new on the forum as of a week or so.
Most of what I know about mechanical keyboards was learned here and at deskthority.net
hello, engineer for engineers! just out of curiosity, where did you get your matias?
Seems theres a post count requirement on the Interest Check Subforum.
I'm wanting to build a steampunk-style keyboardlike this?
I lurked too long, registered too late, and bought too much!
I was going to ask what keyboard, then I looked at your profile :)
I am using filco with mx blues. I like click
i got a bad feeling ill lose a lot of money on this forum :pdefinitely!
I guess this is as good a place as any for an intro.
I'm charlie and I am new to the mechanical keyboard circuit (circus?). I currently have a saitek eclipse 2 and have been looking to upgrade to an non-gimmicky mech board. I do alot of resreach before buying anything, which led me repeatedly to gh. Had to register to view stuff, so I figure I might as well take the plunge and actually post something to the boards.
Anyways, hello gh!
Hello Geekhack,
SmallFry was always ready to help. It was great knowing that I could ask him simple questions that I didn't know. Before his passing, he was going to help me program my Phantom... we never got to do that.
Hello my name is CommonCurt. I signed up a few days ago and have been learning some stuff from reading the forum. I bought my first mech keyboard a month ago, and now I own three of them. They are for sure addictive. I get the 60 posts thing, but I was wondering can we participate in group buys from the start? Just thought I would say hi and introduce myself.
Totally!! My gf thinks im nuts though lol.
Hi. I'm from Hong Kong. I've been lurking here for some time and reading posts, mainly about the topre switches.
Well, I think the keyboards I own speak it all.
First, I bought the DasKeyboard from Amazon.com 2 months ago. It was the ultimate silent version.
I enjoy having a blank keyboard. And I found the 2 USB very useful as my VAIO computers had limited USB slots.
But it's too big and I cannot carry it in my backpack to work. So I bought the Filco Ninja brown switches.
It is still very heavy. So I bought the HHKB pro 2. I bought it from Japanese webshop via a proxy.
I really like the look and feel of the HHKB. My brother had the Realforce 89s (all 30gm) and Realforce 104 UB keyboards.
I like the HHKB better after trying these keyboards. Yet the problem is that HHKB is difficult to use in my work.(No arrows, home/end button)
So I keep it for home use.
Then I had some new keycaps. The Filco double short high profile keycaps. Well... It takes some time to get used to.
I change my HHKB with topre keycaps, pink color.
The Filco is not my favorite keyboard. I think their brown switches are too light.
But the wrist rests are quite good. I have both the wood and leather ones.
Next time, I'm thinking about getting a HHKB type-s as my Christmas/ new year present.
Hi all,
Noob here, with my first mech keyboard on order from WASD. It's a Vader-themed (http://i.imgur.com/W4R8KRU.jpg) tenkeyless. I can't wait! :)
Hey, everbuddy,Welcome! :) For trying out MX switch types, go visit Frys and Best Buy and try out all the gaming keyboards. Many of them have mechanical switches. At Frys in Sunnyvale, they had display models with Blues (Razer BlackWidow + CoolerMaster), Reds (Corsair K*), and Black (uhh I forgot the brand). Best Buy had the BlackWidow (Blues) and Logitech G710+ with Browns (although it has O-rings, so not the best example of Browns in my opinion).
Wanted to get a good keyboard, it's been a long time since I had one I liked. Thought I would learn more about what the options were.
I ordered a switch demo kit from WASD and I can't really tell much from this. I've ordered another kit from CoolerMaster and I'm hoping that will help me get a real feel. (Also, I heard there was a full demo keyboard floating around?)
My guess right now is I'll be going with a WASD custom board using the switches I determine that I like using the CoolerMaster kit.
Happy keyboarding, here I come!
is there any some areas that the post didnt count?
I got to know of geekhack through some mechanical keyboard enthusiasts from a general technology portuguese forum (zwame. if you want to know).
Also because I've made a huge mistake with my Steelseries 6GV2 (it's the only mechanical keyboard I currently own), and I think I'll be able to get help from this forum :P
Hello geekhack !
I was watching this board for a long time. What I have got? I have black alps Alcatel keyboard adn Logitech 710+ with brownies.
Oh wait, Topre? Nevermind. Steer clear of the MXs if you want your wallet to have any chance of surviving.
Cherry or Topre?
In the search for a keyboard that both offers a pleasant tactile and audible feedback, and is not damaging to the tendons of the wrist in the long term, I have wondered whether it is worth while to invest in cherry keyswitch based boards, or Topre? Looking at the characteristics of the Topre capacitive switch, Topre appears to have the advantages of longevity, as the activation of the switch mechanism is not dependent on physical contact between conductors, but tactile Cherry switches seem to provide more positive tactile and audible feedback. ANybody out there who has tried both and have an opinion on the advantages / drawbacks of either?
First off, longevity is NOTHING you should be worrying about in a mech. That being said, topre usually dies before cherry before dies BS. Topre uses rubber domes that get hard after time and change feel. Cherry is all contact but that contact lasts quite a while. BS lasts pretty much forever, and I have not seen a dead BS board yet.
If you're going for ergonomics, topre does not have any options, and for BS, there is just the M15. For cherry there is a plethora of options.
I concur. The M that I got for $5 from a e-recycle shop actually has shiny caps and a couple of the caps the dye subbed legends are actually starting to wear.
No it is just an inherent trait of the material composition of the rubber portion.
Since the rubber dome does not play an active role in the detection of a keypress, is the rubber dome only present in the design to provide some sort of tactile feedback? I wonder if the rubber dome could be done away with permantently, substituting a washer or space of the appropriate size & shape. I believe that contactless switches should be the way to go for any input device.
I just joined today, but I've been into keyboards for a while - I just never realized there was an actual community for it.
Since I was young, I have used a model m, and a bunch of membranes. About two years ago, I bought a Razer MX blue blackwidow - but I just traded that for my dads damaged model m. I'm going to pray I can fix it, and if not, I'll hunt for the model m he lost ;)
Thank you, and that is very good to know, I always enjoy using model M's and having one for my own usage would be brilliant ;)I just joined today, but I've been into keyboards for a while - I just never realized there was an actual community for it.
Glad to have you. Chances are that you can get that M running again. If you need parts just get in touch with Unicomp as they bought most of the orignal tooling for the IBM versions iirc. There are many of us here that can help with getting that back to its former clacking goodness.
You draw it and insert there. Period :)
Hello from Iowa! Haven't made any posts since geekhack was updated, so thought now would be a good time to start!
A hello from Utah. Looking to get into the keyboard world. Hope this is a great place to start. ;D
Greetings Geekhack,
I am a gamer and tech-savvy College Student. I have lurked around this forum for almost 2 weeks researching for my first budgeted mechanical keyboard, and I just take the courage to join today. I want to begin with a good quality mechanical keyboard, but that is worth the price for both typing and gaming. I am into MOBA/FPS type of games. I hope I learn a lot about this forum that I am entering.
I bought a Topre board within two weeks of becoming a GeekHack member.
Coach, I guess I could have said three Topre boards, two Topre keysets, and a Topre clack all within a few weeks. ;)
I've had two Cherry boards for the past few (2-3) years. Now that I have made the jump to Topre, I'll probably start looking into modding my Cherrys.
Agreed, the price of KMACs, other high-end Cherry boards and those sorts are up there in $$$. :eek:
I am reading forums, feedbacks, reviews, learning terms and now my head like a bomb. How to make a decision if there are too many cool keyboards :eek:
Hi, I'm new to the community, I've been lurking for a while and slowly growing more comfortable with posting, but yeah! Mechanical Keyboards are slick
Hello all!
I've been lurking here for a week or so and figured the time had come to get in on the fun!
Like Chino I've been a long time PC overclocker/modder and stumbled across the whole mechanical keyboard community whilst shopping around on line for the next addition to my main gaming PC setup. I love pulling things apart and putting them back together and have restored cars, motorcycles and a lot of camera gear in the past. After having a look around on eBay I figured that cleaning up a couple of mechanical keyboards seemed like a great way to spend my next couple of weekends so I've picked up a Dell AT101W and Chicony KB-5181 to have a play with. I'm super excited!
Anywho, it's nice to meet you all. I look forward to getting involved here on geekhack :)
Hi everyone, I am newbine. I hope to receive your help. :D (http://www.192-168-1-1.us/) :D (http://www.192-168-o-1.com/) :D (http://www.happyholidaysdeals.com/)
Arriving here after already having bought a Noppoo on Massdrop, a Filco on eBay, and gotten in on the Granite drop. At this rate, I am likely to be found walking the streets asking for donations to support my mechanical keyboard habit. Looking forward to enjoying the site.
Hello, I was intdroduced to this by a friend. How did everyone else find it?By accident, when browsing for ergonomical keyboards. The amount of information made me stay. I am still keeping my wallet closed, but I feel like I am about to learn what wallethack is all about.
Hello, I was intdroduced to this by a friend. How did everyone else find it?
Hello GeekHack!! I recently fell hard for mechanical keyboards and now here I am :)
Seemed like the logical next step since half of what I google sends me here.
It all started when I youtube searched asmr and saw a video of a sexy keyboard.. and went downhill from there. tried browns, too light. next up is greens. first time I heard that click for myself in person, I could not stop. and I will not go back. typing on a rubber dome right now, the mushiness hurts me :confused:
Howdy, I'm a pretty hardcore gamer and found this site shortly after my keyboard died (my computer died the same night). I revived my computer that night, but it took a few hours the next morning to get my keyboard up. Its a membrane keyboard, a mirror lycosa. I'm pretty smitten with the way it types and the textural feel of its keys. However, I've wanted a mech for a while because of their longevity and I'm getting more and more annoyed with the selective anti ghosting from the razer. I know the fix on it will be only temporary because there is some corrosion on the board with which the razer comes equipped. So I'm looking for a good mech. The problem is that I roll combos on my keys alot and the valleys on mechs aren't good for that. So it seems that I'm left with one option. Custom keycaps for a mech keyboard! I think I've settled on a Corsair K70 RGB. I'll buy one after I build my new rig and after corsair works out the kinks. Then I think I'll go in with some thick dampeners to reduce the max downpush distance. Then I'll go into rhino and model some new super-shallow keycaps and 3d print em (maybe in steel.) Might even get fancy with it and put a hole in the middle and laser cut some acrylic for the middle so they still light up. Anybody currently undertaking the same endeavor? Anybody know of a place where I can just buy some really shallow sloped (non-chiclet keys) for cherry mx's? Any advise/questions/comments/concerns/criticisms?
Hi - I joined this forum to try to get access to this keyboard utility:
It looks like replies are closed on that particular thread. I am having the same issue the original poster had - the utility link doesn't lead to a download anymore. I would reply to that thread and ask for an update - but it is closed. Can someone who has access to the keyboard debouncer KeybounceFilter.exe post it again?
Sweet - I found it and it worked. Been fighting that for a year and just that easy, now my laptop keyboard works as it should. So nice not to have to edit everything I type to delete all the extra chars!
Hi there, I'm new here and also in the mechanical keyboards world!Hi. I'm currently in France and want to sell my quickfire TK. Are you interested? If you're in Paris, we can even meet up in person!
I discovered a month ago what's a TKL keyboard and decided I want one really bad.
Now that I was lurking around and searching for infos, I also know that I want Mx-Brown switches and a QWERTY layout! :thumb:
Only problem: I'm living in France and want to pay only 150€< with shipment... :-\
Let's do it! ;D
Hey guys.
New guy here. Just got my first MK. (Yay hype.exe)
It's a Poker 2 with Blue switches and I'm loving it.
I'm planning on getting some new keycaps, a sleeved cable and maybe an aluminum case, but I live in Denmark and kinda need to find some retailers first.
Just came to say Hi.
Not a new member, but forgot all my old login credentials :D
I thought German keyboards were QWERTZ?
New here. I actually joined the cult back in May when I got my Monoprice board with MX Blues, but I've recently been getting sucked in more because these things are crack. I got my first fixer upper board recently, an old Kinesis Essential, because I like how funky it looks, and I'm currently eyeing a Ducky Shine 4 with browns because I'm tired of getting complaints about my Blues going CLACK and the shiny lights are fun.
So, hi. :)
Hello. I have been looking around for about 6 months for a Cyrillic only keycap set. Geekhack kept showing up as THE spot to check out rare keycap sets, so here I am. I should have started with and introduction first but I was so psyched about making my own keycap design I started backwards. So, hello. Pardon my being so green, rolling up with questions that were posted in the Read Here first section. Thanks for the politeness in not (deservedly) flaming the bejesus out of me. Much love.
Great.
Recently got interested in Mechanical keyboards so starting looking for it and I feel so lost. /r/mechanicalkeyboard and GH seems to be the right place to hang-around and know more before my first mechanical keyboard purchase.
Seeing all the amazing keyboards on his forum I feel I am missing out so much on keyboards.
Also am I allowed to post in here with my super-advancedbasic-silly, 4-5 year old keyboard?
The Logitech Internet Pro Keyboard. (Attachment Link)
P.S. : Please, PS/2 should be the allowed answer while registering. I tried PS/2, COM and then USB.
New to Geekhack but have been lurking for a while as well!
I've used mechanical keyboards back in the days, and after a long break rediscovered my love for them two years ago. <3
I'm currently using a Roccat Ryos mk pro with cherry mx browns (iso german)...
Yello everyone!
I just registered to contribute to development of a custom-made trackball, hopefully a worthy replacement for the aging Microsoft Trackball Explorers I use.
Man, moneypit is right. Purchased a Logitech G710+ 4 months ago and it's been downhill since. I discovered keycaps. Then I discovered different profiled keycaps, then I discovered cases. Then I discovered the G710+ is hard to find a good bottom row that fits. Got a Poker 2, missed my arrow keys. Ordered a Leopold fc660m and looking for a TKL I might like. Now I spend a lot of time on my phone looking for inspiration designing and color coding my boards. And then I found geekhack. Yay. Anyways, great to be here. Or is it?
Hi, all. So, Model M finally broke. Picked up a a CM Rapid SI (pre-release) as a stop-gap to replace it. I hadn't shopped for keyboards for a while and didn't know they were having a bit of a Renaissance. A little research brought me here; de-lurking to review the SI and sell it in the Classifieds.
//edit: Discovered I can't sell it in the classifieds without more posts. :) Review stands, but FS is over @mechmarket. :p
Hi I'm new here.
I'm a architect programmer by trade, and hobbyist musician/artist so most my life runs through my hands and often my computer/tablet.
I have been interested in increasing the bandwidth between humans and machines for even before having a computer (wishing I could visualize and have my lego constructions built by thought alone).
I have similar needs from tendonsis, being a hardcore programmer/gamer for so many years, I have been increasingly forced to look at lower force keyboards and alternate input methods, to this end I am trying to experiment and use myself as a guinea pig.
Here's my main setup a pipe desk with 4 multimontor, that can do sit, stand, sit on floor, zero gravity reclining, treadmill etc.
https://instagram.com/p/uMCMgrJ0nz/?modal=true
Here's a current portable setup, a pipe desk 2 multimonitor setup, easy to transport.
https://instagram.com/p/v7v7jgJ0hj/?modal=true
Here a variation prototype a meditation bench and closer view of keyboard tray. Which I'll go over more in a minute.
https://instagram.com/p/yDnPqKJ0rt/?modal=true
How I keep my Ipad near for testing/hands free reading via a mic stand. https://instagram.com/p/yFw1geJ0ub/?modal=true
As shown in the meditation bench, what I'm currently using for a keyboard is scissor action BTC mini multimedia keyboard, which I think has 35-45 activation force, low distance travelled, soft bottoming out. And a Kensington optical trackball, on a homemade lapdesk out of a artist sketching board and memory foam, that fits on my chair and in a standing configuration, the goal to support fully the arms so the trapezius and neck relax.
I found a couple years ago going to Fry's and trying every keyboard, mouse and trackball out there to see if any were close, and the BTC has beat out Apple keyboards, and even my exotic fingerworks touchstream for normal use. On the bonus they are super cheap. Sadly they aren't made anymore, but can be found on ebay from time to time. BTC still makes keyboards and the newer ones might be similar.
However I'd like to get to something even lower force and something that I can hack to my needs, with parts that won't disappear. Thus my interest in mechanical keyboard and cherry switches, which sadly look like they will all be too high force for what I ideally want, after getting a useful keysampler from maxkeyboard.
I also have tried recently the lightio keyboard (uses optical beams no keys to press) but really wasn't that useful, dumb matrix, error prone with no positional or tactile feedback, unergonomic fixed grid, so had to return it.
I have found that a ipad onscreen keyboard can be useful at times if you can train yourself not to press harder than dimpling the pad of the finger. I'm currently looking at creating a keyboard in software on an android which can detect pressure sensitivity roughly to try and make it so you can keep fingers on the tablet, and then press harder to activate the key. Sadly the IOS disabled this feature, even though the capacitive sensor can supposedly see the finger above the tablet a couple centimeters.
I am also looking at Leap motion sensor to watch the hand, but it gets complicated as the hand ideally needs to be supported all the time.
;D Greetings everyone!
I'm a college student and PC enthusiast, who's always wanted to "officially" join Geekhack, but has kept putting it off due to the constant barrage of schoolwork an accounting/law double major has to put up with. But I'm finally here! I first discovered Geekhack a few years ago, just a high school student burning my wrists off on a Logitech Elite (rubber dome) when I finally realized the weakest link of my entire setup was my keyboard. A few months later, I was off to college with my Unicomp EnduraPro, custom ordered, and equipped with keyboard wisdom. I can totally vouch for the fact that a passion for keyboards (and nearly all of my other hobbies is an excessively expensive and time consuming pastime, but I truly enjoy every minute of it. That old Logitech is the only rubber dome that I still keep around, as I throw all others into a pile in my basement back at home. My daily weapon of choice is the EnduraPro 103-key layout, and I also have the Corsair K70 RGB, The Topre Type Heaven, A Black-logo Model M, a, IBM Model M13, an original IBM Spacesaver, an IBM Model F, a Lenovo Thinkpad Scissor-Switch portable keyboard (w/trackpoint), several mechanical Logitechs, and a WASD Code (Cherry White) in the mail.
I can't wait to spend a ton of time with you guys, and further my enjoyment of my favorite computer accessory even more!
Regards, SuperScope96
Greetings Geeks
I recently left the boring world of membrane keyboards(except at work )and went mechanical.
Used to game on a Z-Board Merc then upgraded to a steelseries Merc Stealth (only difference is that the body and keys are black and backlit). Due to its layout it quickly became one if my favorite gaming keyboards. Reaching the whole top number row is a win for MMOs.
Found a pretty good deal (I thought so) on a lightly used Logitech G710+. The previous owner also threw in a crap bag. This is what it looked liked before swapping back to stock keys (no o-rings)
http://i.imgur.com/Msyk3B6.jpg
Future plans are to buy those LED covers and make the backlight red. Change the orange trim to a faux brushed aluminum and get ZINC or aluminum WASD keys and spacebar.
Been lurking for a while now. A C# developer by trade, I was looking for split keyboard options a month ago before I ran into the ergodox and thus the world of mechanical keyboard enthusiasts. Currently awaiting the arrival of a partial build from Falbatech and a Poker 2 from overseas. Maybe I'll have something worthy to post in a month or two.
Hey oh!
I just discovered this awesomely dangerous new world last week. The concept hadn't really occurred to me that you can build your own (awesome) leopards. I switched to the Dvorak layout a few years ago and am looking forward to building my own custom ergo board with the inspiration I'm finding here. Thanks guys!
Hello!
I'm the designer over at Massdrop and new to mechanical keyboards. My first keyboard was a WASD and now I'm on a Leopold 66key that I love.
I joined geekhack because everyone at Massdrop is obviously huge into mechanical keyboards and I want to be able to better understand the community.
Browns. Started with a WASD CODE w/ clears but found them a little too stiff, then got a Topre Type Heaven but found them a little too light. Figured I would give browns a try and found I type the fastest with those. I am in the process of building a custom and plan on using 55g springs in clear switches to see how that feels.
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here, plus, I like this keyboard :thumb: (http://www.192168-1-1.info)
Hi all! I accidentally stumbled into the amazing world of keyboards last week when I was researching Ergodox keyboards after seeing the Indiegogo campaign. I decided I just had to make my own keyboard and all my research led me here, so I decided to join. Looking forward to being part of the community and learning a ton.
Hello. Im new around here, but I do love mechanical keyboards, so I think I will find myself in good company here and I look foreward to wasting my money with you all, ;D
Just this week, every time I plug my datahand in, I get a warning about a power surge on the usb and the keyboard won't work.
I am trying to see if anyone has any information if this is fixable.
I really need this thing to work..
Hello all,
I think I'm addicted to keyboards now and instead of seeking help I just joined these forums. I started with a k60 and felt like I got shafted because of the filthy rubber dome keys they sneak in there. It's my fault of course for not reading more about the board but that's what sent me down the rabbit hole. Not to be shafted again I started doing lots of research on different brands, boards, and switches which lead to exploring custom keycaps and diy board kits and on and on. So my original cheapness which lead me to buy the k60 effectively costed me more than I'd like to admit in the form of blowback from this newly found obsession.
I just picked up a Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja to use for work (I program web development things) and I've already ordered Lpwl's O-rings, a group buy from Massdrop for their Vortex set, and some Signature Plastics zodiac keys. I blame Filco, because until now I thought mechanical keyboards were like my old, loud, badly made (apparently) Das Keyboard, which was clunky and heavy and bottomed out seemingly instantly.
Looking forward to spending too much time here.
Hello geekhack community!
Super newbie to the mechanical keyboards. Just getting into it. I know its not a mechanical keyboard but I bought a HHKB Lite2 and really like it so for. I know its still a membrane but I am loving the layout of the keys. Now I want to try my hand on some of the cherry switches!
Hello, my name is Josh.
I am facinated with tech and i am becoming heavy into keyboards and peripherals. I am looking into getting a KBC Vortex 60% keyboard and I have a CM Stealth on the way, on order. I am not in Seattle, but that is a nickname that I go by here in Minnesota. If anyone is in the area that shares this passion, get at me. I am wanting to see the keyboard and test it before i drop $150 on it.
Thank you and happy to be apart of GeekHack.
I also just built my first computer so im building around that, for the most part. Also, to be frank, office furniture hits me in the right place.
G'day, I'm in the sunny Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Came across this very useful forum when searching for what keyboard to buy that would not loose the text on keys in a couple of months or **** out after a year. Learned lots about keycaps, switches etc. and decided to join just so I can says thanks for having this wonderful and useful community.
I was nor prepared to fork out serious money for a mechanical keyboard unseen, erhh, untested (don't mind paying serious money for good stuff but I need to know that it is going to work for me) and initially finished up buying a cheap keyboard, the Rapoo V500 with yellow switches. I like it a lot so started to look at higher end stuff. Discovered the Deck keyboards with double shot PBT keycaps and doublesided PCB's and Cherry switches. No fancy stuff, looks to be bullet proof with a good track record and the more I read about it the more I started to like the idea. Never mind the keyfonts or bad backlighting, it is a tool and I just wanted something that works reliably and does not loose the characters on the caps. Price plus shipping US was holding me back until I discovered that downunder we are well served by MechKB in Sydney, yippee! A few keyclicks and a Deck Hassium with blue background lighting and Cherry MX brown will be shortly on its way. (wanted white lighting but those only come with Cherry MX red)
Thanks to all who made this community possible,
Marinus
Hello everyone,
My name is Christophe, i'm from France and new to geekhack and to keyboard enthusiasts community also.
To be honnest, i found it pretty randomly during my own search about KB on the web when i've got stunt by the WhiteFireDragon's video about the Phantom custom release.
1 hour later, i've decided to try to do my own keyboard ! :D
So i'm here to learn from you all and i will do my best to achieve this first project with your help, :)
< AZERTY keyboards (future) maker ! ;p
... but for now, i've so much to learn, so let's go !!! :p
Hello Everyone,
My name is Joseph and I am excited to join this forum. I never knew there was group of keyboard enthusiasts on the internet. I recently learned about mechanical keyboards and have been doing some research as I will need to buy two mechanical keyboards, one for work and another for home. I am leaning towards Cherry MX Blues but have not decided. Lots of brands and features to consider. I look forward to customizing whatever keyboards i get (I have my eye on the coffee keycaps once those go on sell again).
MX blues re clicky - if you're planning on using such a keyboard at work, I hope your work mates can tolerate the noise
QuoteMX blues re clicky - if you're planning on using such a keyboard at work, I hope your work mates can tolerate the noise
Luckily I have my own office. The question is if I will be okay with the noise LOL. I'm an accountant who spends a lot of time on the keyboard, especially on the ten key - so I'm looking for a full 104 keyboard that will not cause my fingers to get fatigued as easily. I brought myself one of those cherry MX sampler kits but it I am still having difficulty in deciding which switch is best for me. Initially I was thinking blue since those are suppose to be geared towards typist and I do like the tactile feel of them. I just wonder if the actuation force needed will cause fingers to get fatigued.
Hi!
I'm Meika and is a total newbie to mechanical keyboards. To be honest, as I read posts here it was kind of intimidating to see people use terms I couldn't understand much but that's why I'm here. To learn :)
I currently have a Ducky Legend Red Switch and really liking it! My only problem is that the availability of personalized keycaps from where I am is so limited. I'm dying to personalize mine and so, to fix this dilemma, I will test myself to make my own. It would be so nice to know people who makes one and learn a lot from everyone ;D
Hi all! I'm new to geekhack, but I've been interested in mechs for a few years now. I just finished building a planck quark if you want to check it out:
http://i.imgur.com/iZFvv82.jpg
Hi,
I'm Makie and I'm happy to be here. I have a long history with mechanical keyboards going back to dumb terminals from the 70's. I've always liked the positive feedback that a mechanical keyboard offers but for a time the need for macro able gaming keyboards pretty much meant moving over to various types of (short lived) membrane keyboards. When the Corsair K70 came out I jumped on it and that has been my daily driver for the last few years. I still have a shed full of older KB's from the 80's and 90's that maybe one day will be the basis of my own design.
In the near term I'm here to learn and to ask advice from people that make stuff. My two immediate projects are 1) Reusing old and interesting keyboards in new projects (Electron Pi and Think Pi) and 2) eventually a mechanical G13.
Fairly new. Decided it was time I branched out from /r/MK. I enjoy my time here just as much as there! The interest checks and group buys are the real draw :D
what's up yall? Just got into mechs when I bought a poker II w/ browns for school a few weeks ago. Already been exploring the forums and bought some HKP artisans, so can't wait to work on my board.
Hello geekhack,
I'm the new one. I realized the value of good keyboards quite some time ago; my model M from '91 and the 80's Chickony are no ebay buys, but my work equipment I've used since then. But I've never designed a keyboard by myself; something I'd like to do one day (as soon as I've read all these great threads here). Today I've purchased a model F keyboard, so I thought this would be reason enough to join this community (after lurking for several months).
Hey there GH!
I am completely new to GH, not even a lurker... Well not completely new, I have been led here from r/mk a few times. ;D
So I have:
- Roccat Ryos MkPro - Mx-Blue (gaming board, obviously my first mech ._.)
- DasKeyboard Ultimate 4 - Mx-Blue (my board in the office)
- Rappoo KX - yellow kailh (to try linear switches... not for me, but those who like it...)
And I am currently trying to decide on my next board which will be either Mx-Clear or the CM Novatouch, it should just be 80% or 60%. I just couldn't decide yet.
Note: I prefer the US-ANSI layout to the rest, which makes it difficult to get boards for a reasonable price here in Switzerland. Feel free to AMA! :D
Welcome!! Try a Realforce 87U 55g!
Designing a keyboard is a huge undertaking - from designing the PCB, the electronics, the switches, the case, finding somewhere to get it all made, putting it together, responding to queries from curious people ;)
But if you have a Model F, why would you be looking for any other keyboard? :p
Don't get to hear about the yellow Kailh switches, and I think I read somewhere that they are discontinued. Apart from not liking linear, any other thoughts on them?
A nice collection you have started :) If you want a 60%, the Pok3r is a very popular keyboard that you should be able to pickup with MX clears.
And one good point for US ANSI boards - much easier to get replacement keycap sets!
Well.. I have done some extensive research on the availabilty on the pok3r with clears, but it just simply is so expensive with shipping and everything that I have to focus on boards that I can get cheaper. So I could get the Novatouch for 140$ (almost 1:1 with chf) shipping and customs included and the pok3r would cost me 180$.
I will do a little more research on the Novatouch, if maybe you could tell me if it's good?
About linear, I just type so slow and do so many typos on them that I cannot enjoy typing on them. I just need some kind of feedback to feel comfortable when typing.
Ah, almost forgot. Thanks for the welcome! :)
- How do I get multi-quote to work?
Thanks for the info.
I figured out that multi-quote just doesn't work in Edge. It works as expected in Chrome.
Hey y'all. I am new to the magical world of mechanical keyboards, only having had my poker 2 for about 2 weeks now but I will never go back to that dark place of just rubber domes. I Just wanted to introduce myself here as it seems like such an expansive knowledge and communication base and I'd love to be more involved!
I recently got my Eve keycap set in but can't stand the ABS compared to the pokers stock thick PBT :(. My keyboard is now half and half with stock alphas. Hopefully more sets come out in PBT in the future.
What's up geekhack!
Finally decided to signup after way too long of lurking every board for the past 2-3 years.
Hello everyone!! Just got my Pok3r in the mail today!!
New here, might as well get the formalities out of the way. So, I've been researching mechanical keyboards for the passed month. All started when I decided to build a "sim-pit" for Kerbal Space Program. I have some nice hardware for the project, but wanted a compact keyboard that could still sit in front of me, and not take up so much space as to interfere with the joysticks.
I have an Apple //c keyboard that uses Alps SKCM Amber switches. I LOVE the feel of that keyboard, and always wanted to put it to use, so I considered mounting it into my control panel, between the two joysticks. Unfortunately, I realized having a keyboard front and center takes a LOT of space that I want for things like toggles and big red buttons that say [ABORT]... And second, I like fully featured keyboards. That's when I discovered the 75% layout.
I decided that I need to focus on a PRIMARY mechanical keyboard. I'll add a battery and a bluetooth module to my Apple //c keyboard, and make it into a portable clicky mechanical keyboard.
For my primary keyboard, I'll be using the awesome looking "Danger Zone" keycap set (on Massdrop), cause I love the aviation theme, and feel it'll compliment my Kerbal Space Program controller well. I've also put together a modified version of the 75% layout. I wasn't satisfied with just 4 extra keys. I wanted ALL my navigation keys, and more! By adding an extra column, I can gat a total of 88 keys, while only increasing my width by 1u! I can even use standard TKL key caps for it! No odd sizes needed!
As for what I'm typing on now... I have a first gen iMac membrane keyboard with the 78 ui jk and m, columns shorting together, and multiple keys that jam up if not hit perfectly straight downward, due to wear... You can't imagine the editing this post required to not look like garbage! There may still be a few errors... :O
NEED MECHANICAL KEYBOARD SOON!!!
Here's my "75% + 1" layout:
... Posts still 0... So the forum topic that asks people to make their first post in... doesn't actually count... Ugh... :rolleyes:
Welcome to Geekhack!
Very popular keyboard, the Pok3r (and its predecessors). Which switches have you got in it?
I got Cherry reds. I like it kinda quiet. Lol.
QuoteOne of the quieter switches, yes. And if you want to dampen the bottom out sound to make it even quieter, you could install O-rings under the keycaps. Little rubber rings that shorten the down stroke a little bit, but do stop the bottom out sound.
Good to know. I might have to try that out. Thanks!
I just posted in the main forum, but thought I'd say hello here as well! Short-time lurker and brand new to the hobby, I'm really looking forward to getting more involved in the community and seeing how much money I can spend :'(. This is what I have/ordered within a week of discovering just how deep the rabbit hole goes:
Filco Majestouch 2 TKL with MX Browns (this is actually my current keyboard)
Pok3r with MX Blues
Blue/Green Backlit KB Paradise v60 Mini with MX Clears
x2 60% Tex Aluminium Cases (silver and blue)
Danger Zone SA Keycap Set
Yellow/Blue/Grey Paracord USB from /u/90N1NE
Vortex Doubleshop PBT Keycaps (white and blue)
x2 NPKC Blank PBT Keycaps (light blue and mango)
x3 Hot Keys Project Artisan Keycaps (Black/Purple Trooper & Raven, Steel Blue Armor Cap v2 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=61096.0)
I'd say help me.... but I am rather excited to make my first custom board. Anyways, thanks for having me!
Welcome to Geekhack!
I've replied to your other thread already :)
Hi! :)
I have a mechanical keyboard ( 6gv2 ). It has black mx switches. So I ordered 2 custom keys ( Valve Portal themed ) to try a simple first mod. Now I'm looking to get a pok3r keyboard, but would like to now first if it's possible to do something with my existing one?
Hi there!
I just ordered a Pok3r with clears to replace my battle-damaged CMStorm Trigger with blacks.
I decided that now is the best time to dive into this awesome community and expand on the hobby!
I look forward to getting to know you guys :)
Hello all. I just bought my first mech about a month ago. Since then I have picked up a second poker II, 5 capsets, and a translucent warmaster. I was pointed this direction for war of betrayal sales.
Out of curiosity, where are you getting your Pok3r from?
Out of curiosity, where are you getting your Pok3r from?
Hi Rowdy, I ordered it on Massdrop, seems to be the best option for us Aussies right now!
Welcome! What do you mean by doing something with your existing one? Like replace switches? You'll find a world of opportunity with a soldering iron/solder and some patience...
Welcome to Geekhack!
What were you thinking of doing with your existing one?
See the problem with the 6GV2 is that Enter key. No-one makes a replacement Enter key for it, so any replacement keycap set will be missing a key element.
That was a pun, by the way ;)
You could paint the case - I think they all came with black cases, so painting it, say, white would make quite a contrast.
Hi Mech comrades !
I'm here finding a brand new Ducky Shine3 (DK9087S3-BUSALAAG). I will look in the marketplace section, so wish me luck.
... and, nice theme on the forum (Nostalgia)
Welcome to Geekhack!Thank you Rowdy.
Ducky Shine 3 is an older model, as 4 has come out, and maybe even 5 as well.Yes, I know (it was released at 2013), but it seems Ducky has no plans for TKL Shine4, and neither Shine5 (rumor??) :'(
Yes, classifieds (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=59.0) would be the best place to look, unless there are any vendors out there with some old stock still.I've looked at lot of stores and none has the exact model I'm looking for (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=76209.msg1900787#msg1900787) ... my last resort are the Indonesian stores.
Looking forward to learning a lot of great things from people as i start building keyboards for fun!
Hello, I am new here. I have a ducky shine 3 tkl with red switches and an old apple standard m0116 with orange alps. I quite like the orange alps.
Hi, I just joined! I have a Ducky One with Cherry MX Browns, it's the new budget fullsize Ducky came out with alongside the Shine 5. Now that I've had it for a while, I've realized that backlighting and the numpad mean less to me than I thought and I plan to sell it so I can get a Poker 3 (for the PBTs, portability, programmability, aluminum case, etc.). I made my avatar an HHKB because those are so awesome, but I could never afford one or convince myself that it is worth the money (sigh). Maybe someday though.
Fair enough. Yes, Massdrop does seem to ship things at a reasonable cost. Just hoped they've packed it well.
We don't need to go into the Triumph Adler fiasco. And my CODE keyboard was shipped in a large box with plenty of bubble wrap ... on TOP of the keyboard. Nothing underneath though. The keyboard was in its own CODE box, so at least there were a few layers of cardboard between it and the ground. But still.
Just got my Pok3r today; so exactly ^that^ happened and the box is pretty dinged up, but the board itself is perfect. I read on the Massdrop discussion page that some people recieved their boards completely warped! I got lucky I guess.
I am in love the clears, they're a great deal better than any other key switch that I have tried (which isn't that many)
Wasn't sure where to ask this so I'll just ask it here, why does it say i only have 7 posts when I have 13. Just curious :D
well, actually, with the **** fest that went on with brocaps/reddit this whole site isnt registering posts right now. which sucks, how am i suppose to validate myself without those magical numbers?
Hello Geekhack! Completely new member and just joined this hobby just last week! My wallet already has a hole in it XD
Hello GH!
I have been into this hobby for a couple of months now, yet haven't lurked geekhack much. I currently own a POK3R with MX Browns and I've got a Varmilo VA87MR with MX Blues on its way as well as some DSA Dolch caps for it. I've picked up some LEDs so some day I'll open up my POK3R to install them. In the short time that I've been into keyboards, I've tried to learn as much as possible (and I intend to keep learning) so naturally, I've stumbled upon GH on several occasions. :thumb: I'm looking forward to getting to know the communityand not spending too much $so yeah. words words conclusion.
Nice keyboards :)
Where did you find the DSA Dolch? I was going to get a set and decided against it when the original GB was running ... fortunately!Hey guys, I'm new here! Just thought I'd say hi!
Browns for days - what do you use at night? ;)
Hello GeekHack community, I'm also a new user here. Since I got my 1st mech a few months ago I must admit that I'm already hooked! :p
Welcome to GH! Which board did you go with? :)
Welcome to GH! Which board did you go with? :)
My 1st keyboard was a CM Storm Quickfire Rapid-i but I was almost forced to replace it because the leds started to die on me really fast, so I sent it back to the store where I got it from and they gave me a credit note to purchase something else from the store that I wanted. Since I was enjoying the Rapid-i I went with a Quickfire XT with Browns (that store doesn't have much choice unfortunately, and I was sure I wanted a keyboard with Cherry switches instead of Kailh). I don't miss the backlighting anyway.
It's a rather simple and sober looking board and I like that.
A few weeks ago I found a Turtle Beach Impact 500 (I think that's the name...) with Cherry MX Blues on Amazon.co.uk for a really low price (got it gor about 54 euros with shipping) and bought it too.
It's a surprisingly well built keyboard considering it comes from a "gamer" oriented brand. It's solid and looks simple (looks a bit like a Filco Majestouch 2 tbh, I think that's where they got the design from...).
I already purchased a couple of keysets for both.
Here are a few pictures I took today:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/1lx21Lg.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/MBGHHuK.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/YzyOp2j.jpg)
Excuse the potato quality please. I am a terrible photographer and I took these with my phone's camera. :))
Lookin' good! I saw your post on GH Media too, lots of RGB! Kudos to you for going Otaku after buying your first mech board only a few months ago. I've considered it but I think I need to get a bit better at typing first :thumb:
Thanks! I actually got that Ducky Blue/Grey (it's on the QF XT) set from Massdrop because I am slowly trying to learn how to touch-type (I'm still awful at it haha, I make a lot of mistakes). I wanted something that looks clean, almost without legends but I wasn't confident going with blanks yet, so I went for that set which is laser engraved (according to them). It's kind of a middle ground between a normal printed set and a blank one. ;D
Thanks! I got the DSA Dolch keyset from Massdrop a while back so I'm still waiting on them. I had originally planned to put them on the Varmilo, but after reading peoples' comments, they might end up on my smaller pok3r.
Hello GeekHack community, I'm also a new user here. Since I got my 1st mech a few months ago I must admit that I'm already hooked! :p
Hey Greeting from Portugal i own 2 CM Storm TK (blue and browns, one ISO and other ANSI), but im looking for a better TLK one now !
and i think im hooked on Keyboards
Hello!
My name is Triangle and I come from Finland.
My interest in mechanical keyboards has been growing since I got my first mech few months back.
Recently I've been reading /r/mechanicalkeyboards a lot and decided that I can as well register here :D
I currently have Corsair K65RGB with reds, and just bought Rapoo KX which will probably arrive today or tomorrow.(22€ from black friday sales, wooo!)
I also plan on getting POK3R with some cool keycap set, and maybe replacing the Kaihl yellows in Rapoo KX with MX blues.(I expect mechs killing my wallet at some point :D)
I will probably be asking a lot of help from here with those projects.
Hiya
Been browsing on/off for some time now.
I've cycled through a few keyboards, but so far the HHKB Pro Type-S (JIS layout with the arrow keys) is by far my favourite. JIS Layout didn't end up sitting as well as I thought it would... Oops. I've had it as my daily driver for a few weeks now.. I dunno, maybe I should keep at it.
I like to obsess over more than just the feel and look of the keyboard, which is commonplace here and something I enjoy reading about.
I'll pop up every now and then, I also take too long to type out posts :V
Welcome to Geekhack!
HHKB can take a few weeks to become accustomed to the layout, at least the US layout (for want of a better term for it). I have not tried the JIS layout, so I have no idea how long that would take!
I keep swapping between TKL ANSI keyboards and my HHKB, so it's taking me longer to acquire the muscle memory of the layout, but I get by.
Many see posting as an opportunity to use or favourite keyboards :)
Where did you get the HHKB from, if you don't mind my asking. Not many places (i.e. none) sell them in Australia.
Thanks! Definitely, JIS layout is a little awkward, going shift-2 for quotation marks or shift-7 for an apostrophe throws me off quite a bit, aside from that the rest is pretty comfy (I reckon), the feel of the keyboard makes up for it :V
I bought it via a member of the shmups forum (I have a bit of a history in arcade rhythm/shooting games) who runs a little shop as well as some proxy work here and there. The keyboard itself came from Amazon JP with an additional blue keycap set :>
I'm just here for the key cap sales :)
Hello Geekhack community. New member here.
The current keyboards I own are the Das Model S Professional with the Brown switches. I have recently acquired the HHKB Professional 2 as I wanted a smaller form keyboard and also wanted to try out topre switches. I am really enjoying the typing experience on it.
My first mech keyboard was the SteelSeries 6GV2 with mx blacks. A reasonably priced, solidly built keyboard. The letters started fading pretty soon, but a very nice keyboard nonetheless. I also owned the Razer Ultimate 2013 with blues, which I never got used to. Something about the key spacing meant that I never really enjoyed typing on it. I did appreciate the macro keys for data inputting. It developed a fault and I was able to purchase the Das with the refund.
I will probably sell my Das for a Pok3r with blues in the near future.
Ha you have good point there. Of course 'near future' is a relative term... But I do want to give blues another chance some time as I did like its clicky sound. :)
However, yes you are correct, I feel more than spoilt with the HHKB.
*sorry for the layout, evidently I am still getting used to using this forum :)
First off, super happy to be here. I'm a long-time keyboard lover who is looking to build my own keyboard from scratch. I went from using an IBM Model M, to getting a Ducky Shine, to ordering and building an Atreus kit, and now want to go from zero to hero. I'm excited to learn from you all, and to get inspired.
Good evening,
My name's William Jones & I'm a new member. I got my first mechanical keyboard this past August. It was a Corsair K60RGB w/ cherry mx red switches. I later exchanged it for a k70rgb w/ cherry reds. I then picked up a Rosewill rgb80 tkl w/ khail browns. I later got rid out both keyboards b/c I didn't care for the software. I know own a 3 Varmilo mechanical keyboards (108 key w/ gateron reds & white leds, a tkl w/ gateron browns & orange leds, and bluetooth tkl w/ gateron blues & white leds). I recently picked up a white fox kit w/ zealios 67g purple switches, it's going to be a while before I have it. Either way, I'm happy. I've picked up some keycap sets too. I've Ocean blue Signature Plastics, Ducky pink & white set, yellow Varmilos, and translucent black Max Key w/ front backlit font. I love mechanical keyboards. I hope to pick up a Vortex pok3r RGB when it finally releases or if I get impatient, 1 of the current backlit pok3rs. I also hope to get 2 40% mechanical keyboards. With the 40s, I want either a jd40, plank, or a gobalt40. I know this much, I enjoy computers & I really love mechanical keyboards! :thumb:
Thanks for the warm welcome.
As of now it's a tie between gateron blues & browns. The blues are good for home use & the browns are my go to for work. I've got some things to do w/ my family, but soon as I get the chance, I'll post some pictures.
Hi all. I've been lurking for a bit and decided to make a new account a few days ago. I'm still pretty new to the KB game maybe a few months? I'm currently using a Pok3r with mx blues and will be expecting a realforce 55g in a few days.
For those who carry Keyboards I have a few questions?
is the Realforce something reasonable to carry to classes? Spring Semester starts a week from now and I will be taking the bulk of my notes except for Bio classes on my computer.
This is a great forum please treat me well. :blank:
Hi, I am new member. I just purchased my first mech 2 months :thumb:
Hi, I'm new to geekhack. Just started using mechanical keyboards a few weeks ago after I finished building my atreus keyboard and the corresponding TMK firmware for STM32.
Now looking to add a trackpoint before starting another build, maybe an ergodox.
If anybody has any suggestion as to an alternative to the trackpoint that is not a mouse and can live on a convenient place on the keyboard, I'm open. I already tried an analog joystick, but it's not sensitive enough to replace a trackpoint.
Hey guys!
Been a lurker here for a short while. I am still waiting for my pre-ordered first mech kb from mechanicalkeyboards.com.
It's a 60% keyboard with Matias Click type switch. (+1 for ALPS! )
Just finished learning the proper/standard typing for QWERTY last December and I'm now at ~90 wpm (though I'm at ~70 wpm back then while using only 8 fingers) using the keyboard of my laptop so I decided to look for a decent keyboard to help me on my 150-200 wpm journey.
I've learned so much stuff already from this community!
Cheers!
Thanks a lot for sharing this amazing knowledge with us. This site is fantastic. I always find great knowledge from it.
I appreciate you and hopping for some more informative posts
Just registered here; wanted to express appreciation and admiration for what you all do here. This community looks to be very knowledgeable and informative!
Thanks again.
Which aspect of it interests you the most?
There is so much to keyboards that most people don't realise, until you open their eyes to keyboards, switches, 60%, 40%, keycaps, artisans, switches, buckling springs, rubber domes, lube, stickers, balls and the list goes on.
I'm a 'pro case modder' by profession, so modification and customization of keyboards in general is merely an extension of that to me so it's a natural fit. I love the feel of mech decks. I grew up on Unicomp keyboards, scissor-key decks, etc. Curiosity is what really drew me here and began lurking for a while before posting. It's the passionate nature of the keyboard enthusiasts that really makes me appreciate what you've all done here. I'm a forum owner as well so I can greatly appreciate a good community of enthusiasts!
Longtime Lurker here. Finally got an account! Looking to contribute to the community! :thumb:
Welcome! There's quite a few of us in Seattle I've noticed. Not unexpected, though.
I never introduced myself when I started posting a few months back. I also have a WhiteFox (True Fox) on order. I am ridiculously excited to get that board, although I probably won't build it upon receipt. I think I'll wait for my 78g Zealios from the R2 GB.
This is a great community and I'm really happy to be a part of it. I've learned to set and maintain a keyboard budget and avoid going over that amount.... by more than 2-3x. :))
Definitely. My keyboard budget is as all the money not intended for food for until the next pay period.
This is a great community and I'm really happy to be a part of it. I've learned to set and maintain a keyboard budget and avoid going over that amount.... by more than 2-3x. :))
"keyboard budget" LOL
Definitely. My keyboard budget is as all the money not intended for food for until the next pay period.
"Food" is subjective. Some members have advocated living on ramen in order to save money that can then be spent on keyboards.
Greetings all! I discovered the mechanical keyboards a couple months back and was convinced to buy the WhiteFox. Since then I've acquired a model M and am awaiting the arrival of a model F. This community has such a level of enthusiasm I found it impossible to not get pulled in. You guys rock and I am thrilled to join you!
I've been eating lots of microwavable soup lately. Got tired of ramen.
Hello everyone! I just recently started getting interested in mechanical keyboards. I finally think I'm ready to buy one but I've been looking for advice on certain things. I have heard great things about this forum.
Hi there!!
I finally decided to join you, i've spent long time following this forum, especially the keycap casting threads.
I'm studying industrial design and i have experience with molds and resins. Right now i'm developing my university final project, but if i have some time i'd love trying to make some custom keycaps. I definitely don't have money for a pressure plate right now so, we'll see.
I'm familiar with 3d modelling and printing so maybe I can start with that.
;D ;D ;D
Have you seen the :~$ynth (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=78551.0)? Might make casting keycaps a little easier ...
Apart from that you certainly can print keycaps, although the results can vary a bit depending on plastics, design, tolerances and so on. Maybe have a look through making stuff together (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=117.0) to see what other have been up to.
Hello! ;D I first bought a Corsair K70 in Cherry MX browns, and then next I bought a CM QuickFire Rapid in Cherry MX browns as well. I've recently ordered the MagicForce 68 in Gateron blues so I am very excited to try it out. I also jumped on the recent Pulse group buy on massdrop!! As far as favorite switch, I am not sure yet but I feel like I will enjoy the gateron blues a lot, probably more than the cherry mx brown!Long time lurker, finally decided to make an account! ;D
What keyboards have you got (I can't work them out from the little pics in your sig)? What is your favourite switch?
Something for gaming, that I will need (and buy) in 2017/2018. Expensive stuff likely, I don't mind spending a lot on good quality.
Blues (probably Gateron too, although I've only got MX blues) have much more tactility than browns, as well as that click.
Pulse is an SA keyset - there's a lot of plastic in each keycap. I've found that SA keycaps work better on heavier switches, like clears, blacks or greens. When used on lighter switches (e.g. MX red, blue) they just make the switches feel way too light.
YMMV - I do prefer heavier switches normally.
I've read on, um, probably reddit that some people had problems with clear switches on the kbparadise. Ghosting issues I guess, idk if it was only the switches shipped with the kbparadise boards or what. Might need lube if you go with clears, possibly.Oh that's unfortunate, another cool switch I'd like to try out that the kbparadise v60 offers is the Gateron yellow.
I'm not even sure what a ping sounds like, but im almost sure my K70 does it with some keys. I game quite a bit with that board, and I've noticed the WASD keys sometime make a weird metallic noise.Thanks for the heads up. I'm definitely considering getting cherry mx clears next! There are two things to watch for with clears - keyboards with clears can tend to ping a lot, and the clear stems have an extra nub on the top which can make lots of keycap sets tighter than usual.
Neither is a deal breaker - my CODE with clears pings, but very quietly and I only notice it when I'm concentrating (and even then it just sounds like distant wind chimes), and I haven't changed keycaps on it yet, but with care and a little wiggling as you remove the keycaps you should be right.
That gives you quite a while to do research!
But the way the keyboard world brings out new models whatever you like this year will probably be superseded by a new model by then.
hi! new to the community in general (started on r/MK), recently picked up a VA87MR.
looks like a pretty friendly community =)
oh, I see haha. I did hear about some GB drama recently though.
incidentally (this is probably not the place to post this) but is key chattering easy to fix?
gotcha haha. I did do some preliminary searching but it was just an offhand question really; thanks for the links though!
Hey, have a welcome penguin!Show Image(https://media.giphy.com/media/aCpvwi2tuFQUE/giphy.gif)
yep! not actually mine but a friend of mine's haha, they're pretty expensive but feel like a very wide gamecube controller otherwise. I think it's for the PSO japanese game on the gamecube?
Kind of reminds me of that Surf's Up movie :D
Well, hi. I stumbled into this crazy world of keyboards while I was looking for a nice keyboard for my girlfriend (so she doesn't have to endure the torturous keyboard on her MB Air). I ended up settling on a WASD V2 with clears, since they play nicely with Mac. But now I want my own baby. Alas, nothing is exactly like what I want. I really like the 60%s like the HHK but I really like the feels of the Cherries in WASD. So I think that I've been bitten bad, because now I'm just like "Well, nothing to do but make a custom one from scratch..." even though I know next to nothing about electrical engineering and even less about coding. I guess the only things I've got going for me are my sense of design, some CAD experience, and you. ;D
Wish me luck and please don't mind if I ask lots of questions.
My nephews loved Surf's Up. It's really not a bad flickKind of reminds me of that Surf's Up movie :D
Haven't seen that one.
It reminded me a bit of Happy Feet, although I haven't seen that either (but my daughter has).
Hello all,
I write you as a new member and owner of a new Deck Francium Pro 87. This is my first mechanical keyboard for which I am now on a quest for new keycaps. I'm also now becoming addicted to at least searching for a future replacement to this entire keyboard...not because I need it, but because I want it.
I am an IT Expert.Hi, welcome :) What keyboard/switches are you waging battle with?
Haha, I joined GH with a cheapo rubber dome.
Hello Everyone!
joined in March of this year and I have been loving it so far.
It all started when I saved a pristine condition G81 (MY Switches) in our company's dump.
I have been watching a lot of tech videos about the cherry switches before, was considering on purchasing a g710+ but, since, finding that G81 I have been enlightened of the infinite possibilities of mechanical keyboards.
Since then, I have found a couple of vintage boards, 2 Dolch PAC keyboards. (Sold 1 on mechmarket), 2 WYSE terminals 2 white alps boards (unknown origin) a Lexmark model M (funny story on this one)
currently rocking a Stock pok3r w/ mx clears and DSA deep space.
my wallet has a huge hole in it right now. with all these artisans coming out and group buys here and there.. but, I have never been so inspired in my whole life to become a part of this niche community.
I am here to stay.
I found them in my company server room. Of course I asked permission before taking them. The dolchs were part of a network analyzer that had broken screens. As expected they let me take it thinking they were useless since, they had terminal connectors.
I suppose I can't just stay on /r/MK all the time, not with the amount I spend on buttons...
I'm taking the plunge...Started off with an IBM Model M a roommate just had in the attic, he sold it to me for $30! Eventually, bought a refurbished Corsair K60 but they ran out of stock after I ordered so they gave me a brand new one instead :). I needed a keyboard for my new work desktop and thought mx browns were the switch for me. I picked up a CoolerMaster Quickfire Pro and two Vim keycaps for my escape button on both keyboards. Now a friend of mine sold me a Das Keyboard 3 for $20 and I've been looking to replace the keys on them (they're blank and discolored). Ordered some Tai-hao Miami (coming in Thursday!) and have just been drooling over all these artisan caps...I know I'm right at the brink of so much wallet sadness, but for now I just ordered some basic 3D-printed cthulu and pixel heart caps from shapeways and I'll paint them myself.
Been lurking on geekhack for a while, but realized that if I want to be able to get in on the next Penumbra release, I'd have to join the club sometime :)
I've got a CMStorm Quickfire TK with browns, a Pok3r backlit with clears, and a Massdrop Planck on the way (probably gonna put Zealios, 67g on that, maybe a few 78g ones on the arrow keys)
I'm a big fan of "TK" or "96" style boards, and I just missed out on the ZZ96 drop, so I think the board I'm most interested in right now is the B.mini EX X2...hopefully can get my hands on one of those soon!
Nice to meet you all. I'am security expert and software developer. I'm glad to join this forum
love to learn more and hopefully in the future be able to contribute something back!
thank you!
Hello GH, first time poster here. Been lurking for couple of months.
First off thank you all for the awesome content, enthusiasm and encouragement!
Me so far .. Poker with MX Blue (co-worker complaints - may be I should've to moved to where rest of the eng. folks are sitting), Poker with MX Red - so far my favorite MX switch! It's like typing on butter. HHKB with black blank caps - slowly growing into it ;-)
Team wolf zhuque - yet another keyboard I haven't heard of :)) So many of them - when I started this hobby there were only about half a dozen that people recommended. Things were much simpler back then.
Then some damned fool went and invented electricity and things have been going downhill ever since :p
I was also going to say at least the Team wolf zhuque has a standard layout, so finding suitable replacement keycap sets will be much easier.
Howdy fellas, new guy here. My account's a little over a month old but I've only really used it for the Artisan Services forum, though I have lurked a bit in the others.
I'm not sure I've got much worth adding discussion-wise since I'm new to mechanical keyboards in general and I don't know too much on the subject, but I'm sure that'll change with more lurking. I'm looking forward to learning more about it, but I can't say the same for my wallet.
hello!
I've been a lurker here and on r/mechanicalkeyboards for some time. Recently I posted a concept for a keycap on reddit that got a lot of positive response! Now I am compiling research and supplies to start making 'em.
A little extra about me : I'm a student living in FL studying Horticultural science. I love plants, games, and most of all, my cat Beans!
thank you!
Hey, guys! New member here! ;D
Just bought my first keyboard, the Leopold FC750R, from MK.com! Heard that the stock keycaps are amazing, build quality is top-notch, and a ton of more good things about it! Really excited to get it...
Anyways, glad to be part of this awesome community now!
Hello All!
Well, just like most of you, I too was once a lurker on gh! After learning so much and getting so much information, I decided to stop being a creep and finally make an account. I ended up getting myself a duckyshine 5 keyboard with nature white switches and slapped some max dark clear front printed keycaps. I am a fan of the artisan keycaps and hope to one day be a proud owner someday.
Nature whites feel really nice. You're right about not having anything to compare them to...the only thing I could say is that you really don't have to press down too far to have the key register. Probably 20%? I'm glad to hear that your duckyshine is still kicking, and I'm hoping mine to do the same as well. The artisan keycap that I'm really looking forward to getting is the Sparkle Loft Artisan Keycap. I've already requested on Massdrop but don't know how long it'll be before the drop is up again. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.
Just recently found r/mechanicalkeyboards and have found myself here several times. I have fallen down the rabbit hole... I want to try to make my own caps now.
I've been using a DAS with cherry blues for a few years and recently added some o-rings.
Have the O-rings made much of a difference for you?
Have the O-rings made much of a difference for you?
Yeah, I'm a bit heavy with my key presses so 1 o-ring was enough to soften the noise. I tried 2 but the actuation was too short and I had to lift off further from the key.
Hi all! Have been a lurker here for a while now and finally decided to sign up as a member after I got tips to procure my latest addition to the herd in the form of a Varmilo VA87M with MX clears. This is actually my 4th MKB. My first is a CM QFR-i with MX red, second a KBT Race 2 with MX blue and the third, a Ducky One TKL RGB with MX brown. I've more or less settled my preference towards tactile switches.
There's lots of good reports about Varmilo!
What made you try the clears, which are considerably heavier than the switches in all your other keyboards?
Hello.
I'm taking up for the project, which will be something like a usb keyboard.
The keyboard is designed to support the program on the PC, which is based I hotkeys.
The keyboard has 70 Cherry MX keys.
USB module will be a teensy pcb.
Housing - black laminated plywood.
Fixing - steel plate.
Connection - wires and diodes (without pcb for now).
I do not hide that, I'll need help with some issues, such as the design of the mounting plate or programming teensy.
And here the first question: whether teensy can be programmed shortcuts such as <RightAlt + b> or <Shift F1>?
Regards, and wait for the advice.
As I just wanted to try a heavier tactile switch for a change, Varmilo was really the best option out there with a good build and is fully customisable
Hi everybody! Just got into mechanical keyboards after seeing their subreddit pop up all the time with beautiful keyboards. Now I'm obsessing over custom keycaps and planning my first build. I also love creative work and do a bunch of sculpting for fun, so eventually I will try to figure out a way to make myself some custom keys. Not sure how difficult it will be but after seeing those kosmonavts and other custome enamel keycaps that are impossible for me to buy, I figure it may be a fun hobby for me to take my sculpting hobby and combine it with my new keyboard hobby. And advice or tips/videos would be appreciated!
first, they are a moneypit.you need riches to enter walhalla!
Has the Varmilo arrived? What do you think of the switches?
When I first started using MX clears (CODE TKL), I found that I didn't bottom out all the time, and even missed a few key strokes as I wasn't pressing the keys hard enough. But now quite a few months down the track I'm typing away quite happily on it.
Not right now though, at the moment I'm using my HHKB ;)
I bought my first mechanical a few months ago on Massdrop, it is a white fullsize E-Element kyeboard with Outemu blue switches. but I wanted something smaller so I moved to a custom KC60 with Gateron clears, I built it myself. I don't feel totally good on this keyboard because the keys with stabilizers don't feel right and sometimes get stuck when pressed, resulting in missed keypresses, also I haven't yet figured out how to program it to my likings. I want to swap out the stabilizers if possible, but I think it might be hard to get the old ones out.
The Varmilo arrived 3 days after I confirmed with payment made. So far, so good. In comparison to MX brown, the MX clear are clearly (pun intended) heavier though I must admit, the bump is still not as pronounced as I had expected. Next on my list, a Topre board!
Too bad I need a dedicated row of F-keys for gaming purposes or the HHKB would indeed be a good option for me.
:cool:Nice to geekhack
It's amazing that find such a cool website.I got to know this one from one of my friende who has been into machanical keyboard for 5 year. I think that I am very lucky for finding so much enthusiastic fans of mechanical keyboard.I hope that in next time I can learn and get more about mechanical keyboard together with you.
Hello, been lurking on here for the last couple of weeks drooling over many of the custom keyboards on display. I'm from Melbourne, work freelance as a dev, and have been using a mech kb only for gaming on my PC (Steelseries 6gv2 with cherry mx blacks).
Now making the jump to a mechanical for work and also starting the journey of research and reading to try and build my own. First keyboard I ever typed on was a C64 which we bought second hand when I was about 7 years old. Currently typing on a generic Mac bluetooth keyboard :-[
Any ideas which keyboard you'd like to make? Building one yourself you'll be ordering all the parts from overseas, unfortunately. There are quite a few available locally though, but only in pre-built form.
Hello! I've been lurking on /r/mechanicalkeyboards, and I see geekhack links pretty frequently, so I finally decided to make an account.
I have a couple Leopolds, the FC900R and FC750R, and a CMStorm Quick Fire Pro. Pretty standard, boring stuff so I'm toying with the idea of a Planck, if the kits are ever on sale again.
Oh I of course treat them with the utmost care, I just mean that it seems like everyone has an exotic <100% keyboard with layered layouts and fancy one-of-a-kind keycaps :)
Hi everyone.
New guy here. Been lurking /r/mechanicalkeyboards and infrequently visiting here for a while. Currently have a Corsair K60, but I've got a blank Leopold FC660M in browns on the way. Sort of being tempted by keysets now...
Cheers,
Venku
I think posts in the classifieds, artisan services, and off topic sections are not counted.
All you need is a direct link to an image and use bbcode around the link to insert it into a post. The forum also has an attachment option.I think posts in the classifieds, artisan services, and off topic sections are not counted.
thanks man! :thumb:
One more question. Do you know how to add image to my post? (not using attached file option, I found "insert image" but not sure how to use it)
just out of curiousity, will the "verification" requirement to make a post disappear after so many days or a # of posts? Or is this a permanent feature of the forum to send spammers elsewhere?Which verification are you talking about?
Which verification are you talking about?
I'm not familiar with that. I assume it would go away pretty quick, I can't say I recall ever seeing that.
Which verification are you talking about?
Having to type in the letters from the the difficult to read box and then answering the question about the serial bus.
Also will I have to enter a captcha everytime I post?
Welcome! You shouldn't have to enter captcha, and your post count is at 1 still because you have been posting to boards that don't add to it.
Hi all,
Long time lurker finally made an account on here.
Hi all,
Long time lurker finally made an account on here.
Welcome Dr. JP
First off, welcome to the world of keyboards. There are two things you will discover quite shortly about keyboards and keyboarding related accessories: first, they are a moneypit. Your money? all gone. Second, they are awesome; you will be poor but happy.
OK, LOGISTICS: you are currently a New Member. That means you can view nearly all of the forums, and post replies, including attachments and videos, in every forum. There are a couple forums you can't see, but no worries, they're a bit like spamalot; they are silly places where only silly things are done. At some point (currently50 10060 posts, but subject to change without notice), you will join the ranks of the Full Members, soldiers of fortune who are allowed to submit NEW topics to the classifieds and group buy forums.
TL;DR YOU NEED AT LEAST 25 POSTS AND 60 DAYS OF MEMBERSHIP TO POST NEW TOPICS IN CLASSIFIEDS & GROUP BUYS :-*
HOWEVER: do not think that you should simply spam your way up the clacker ladder. Your keyboard, as you will soon learn, is a refined tool only meant for the purest of thoughts. If ye spam, we will delete. Instead, have fun, ask questions, comment on demik's flatulence, etc. in short, LURK LESS! we welcome your input.
SO THEN: Welcome to geekhack! Have fun clacking! (and sorry about your wallet :D)
P.S. WalletHack is REAL, read more about it here: Unhacking the wallet in 2015 - confessions of an addict (warning: long) (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=67980.0)
Hello! I'm new and I just wanted to share to you guys my keyboard~ :D
Ohai, just read the welcome message...you really mean I gotta get out of my comfy lurker bubble? Oh man...
Anyhow...finally made an account after 1 year into this hobby (and a fair bit o' lurking on these forums)...only 1 custom keeb for now...but I love it very much :)
Hello,
I am a unfamiliar with this type of board. I am not a geek. I do have an interest in programmable keyboards and repair of same.
I do not understand why there are so FEW programmable keyboards. Seems to me that anyone who computes would desire and use a keyboard with dedicated programmable keys for macro long-ins, etc.
In my short life, I have gone through 2 Gateways, 2 Adesso's, 1 Logitech, and now, a big pain in the ass --my Corsair k95.
Corsair help /support was meaningless and NOT helpful at all. :mad:
All I want to do is bring back functionality of my G1-18 keys.
Anyone know how to repair of fix this? Do I need a new chip or what?>
Corsair is of NO help :mad:....no information and no parts. Will NEVER buy another Corsair product. :mad:
What about steelseries?
Others brands with dedicated programmable keys.
Who, if anyone, repairs Corsair's?
Dude, you skipped the beginner step and went straight to pro? That's just not the natural order of things....
Hi all!
I'm absolutely new to this world of mechanical keyboards.
I'm from Hungary which is the less lucky part of the world in this hobby. :'(
Practically it's impossible to find hungarian layout keycaps (even some basic types, not to mention the more beautiful quality sets) and all other parts are also a bit bigger challenge to get.
Currently I'm using a cheap Redragon Vata gaming keyboard. Redragon is almost the only manufacturer with HUN layout.
I've just finished the mods on it (case sound dampening, lubing, stab corrections and lubing) and it turn out pretty amazing compared to the original.
My next goal is to build an own TKL wood case design (I'm a hobbist woodworker), and trying to find the inner parts for it including an elegant HUN keycap set (not giving up... :D )
Hope I can find some help here.
All the best guys
Hello world !
Software developer from France,
How should I ever reach 25/60 posts.
G'dammit, now I have to be active to be active (no typo).
At least +1 now
How did you know I was spending a lot on keyboards?! It is nice to know that I am not the only one spending too much money on keyboards. I got obsessed with the model M very quickly. It started when I ran a google search for linux keyboard. Unicomp was basically all I came up with. I got the classic 101, no Windows keys thank you, linux version with Caps Lock, Ctrl and Esc, ~ keys switched. I now own several from Unicomp, and the original from clickykeyboards.We all have. We all have...
Am I officially a geek now? ;DDepends, are you hacking? :cool:
Helloo! I'm Jattic. I'm in the mist of creating a new keyboard brand with my designs. I hope to meet some dope people here and possibly get some feedback and guidance. I'm still learning this space as well.Best of luck Jattic!
Hi all. Unfortunately, I can not place an post "WTB". And I don’t want to spam and write nonsense for 25 posts. Can someone help me post? No advertising, etc. Only on business!
Hey everyone! Looking forward to learning more ways on how I can hyper-fixate anything related to keyboards.
Hi all. glad to be here
Ive been a gamer since the early 90s and have been in the IT field for a decent amount of time now.
I decided to start getting more in depth with mechanical keyboards and I am addicted now.
Some days i think building keyboards can be just as fun if not more fun than even gaming with them.
not trying to make you feel like a fossil, but... did you have any experience with cool vintage keyboards back in the 90s?
ah ok, do you have a picture of everything.
Hi everyone, nice to meet you.
I'm 'one of those' who uses ISO-ES with an Ñ ;D
I also sculpt as a form of hobby so at some point I may try to sculpt keycaps :thumb:
Is there a cure for the "spend all money on keyboards" syndrome?
Hi everyone, have been into custom keyboard for some time now. Currently using 2 Mode Eighties as daily drivers - a 2020 Lotus at home and a 2022 E-White in the office.
Have tried both tactile and linear switches but I am definitely in the tactile camp. Worked through Holy Pandas, Boba U4Ts, Durock T1s and even made my own Holy Trash Pandas frankenswitching YOK trash panda housings with Drop Halo True stems. Using Gateron Baby Kangaroos now in both keyboards - these bad boys sound and feel so good.
Hello everyone, brand new to the hobby and have been scouring the web for info before buying my first board
Hey guys! Looking forward to having some keyboard homies
What keyboards are in your collection?
I'm looking for something a little more on the rich side at the moment. Solid aluminum chassis NCR80 style. I see the Aliexpress NCR80s.... have been tempted, but I think I want it to be on the heavy side.
MMkeyboard has one I have seen, but only the red currently in hot-swappable. I prefer the hot-swappable to avoid de-soldering to change switches.
Also a full 108 key with a solid aluminum chassis would be sweet.
If you have any suggestions that would be awesome
oh nice, wasn't the biggest fan of the boba u4ts when I tried them at a meetup, they were pretty overlubed so that might've been why.
do you have a pic of the board?
