no one's safe here. i know few people that live an honest lifestyle that even comes close to living a conscious sustainable lifestyle. i try to my best to be reasonable, but kind of surrendered to the fact that there's just no way i can live sustainably. i recently watched a video that talked about why paper bags are actually less sustainable than plastic bags. i think it's really hard to live in the US and live sustainably, we're just too plugged into consumerism. just consider the premise of this forum we're on. we're just in way too deep. this is lightly unrelated but lately i've been selling a lot of my old gear that i don't use anymore. feels good to cleanse myself of all this stuff i own and perhaps stopping someone from having to buy something brand new while giving my old stuff some new life.

This, and it is also gratifying to me to buy used and second-hand items for this same reason.

And, I feel comfortable with vintage things in general and get satisfaction from refurbishing things to their original glory.

i try to reuse before recycle, if i can directly reuse something that at worse is less energy spent on transport and recycling, at best one less thing burnt or in a landfill, although not everything can be reused, sadly...

I normally tend to re-use or repurpose alot of products before they go to a recycler.  I know a majority of bottles here end up a bit north of me to become carpet. 
A majority of products are made with plastics and as a consumer we have no real control over that in the end and shouldn't be shamed into thinking we're evil for buying products that have plastics in them.

I would say, the control we do have is , don't buy it, find something else to do it or do something else.

That's random!  I recently discovered the supermarket I shop in has a range of duvets and pillows made from recycled bottles which resulted in the same reaction.

It's good to know recycling's not a complete waste of time.

Learned about the recycling for carpet back in grade school, it was still nice to see the carpet manufacturers in N. GA still doing it and making use of recycled plastics.   A few grocers recycle their bags to make furniture as well (mainly for their own stores - Kroger).
