GH Secret Santa 2012
« on: Thu, 29 November 2012, 09:16:22 »
Had the idea while driving to work today. Has a GH secret Santa been done before? Are people interested in it?

For those not familiar, secret Santa is a game where a group of people draw names and they are assigned to give a gift to the person they drew. No one (should) know who has who until after everyone gets their gifts. It's a fun way to bring a community closer. Not sure if there will be any problems with this (people not sending stuffs, people bickering etc.)

If this happens, it would probably need mods to help. But anyways, discuss!

With regards to international shipping, I agree with jdcarpe. If there are international participates, I think it will be fine as long as everyone is aware and understand it's just a part of the drawing. GH fun won't be bound by borders!

Update 12/3:
Hi guys, it looks like no one seems to be object international shipping so let's include our friends across the waters! Honorable mentions, please confirm you are IN! As demik pointed out, this was started a bit late so I will start setting up some dates. I want to have the total list by Friday December 7 so if you see your name on the list above, you can start PMing me your name, address gifts should ship to, and email address. If someone that's not a serial killer would like to volunteer to be the dedicated person to hold my shipping information, please post here or include in your PM. Once the drawing happens and you drew me, please contact jdcarpe for my shipping information! There were some posts on here that was not 100% clear if interested, so I did not add them to the list, if you are interested but you don't see your name please post here and/or PM me.

I am thinking that the gifts should be in the mail by the week of December 11, or earlier in case the mail gets delayed due to the holidays. Gifts should be mechanical keyboard related and at least around the $5 range but has no limit (this can be changed if everyone agrees, priceless gifts are even better), feel free to get creative! To help your Santa and ensure you get a good gift please feel free to post a short wishlist or information that will help.

If anything's not clear, just let me know. I hope this will go well, perhaps we can do this every year with a bigger and bigger group!

Update 12/7:
Hi everyone, as you know the drawing is today. I might have to do the drawing earlier today because I have to pick up my girlfriend from the train station so I won't be by a computer around 7. I left this thread open so people have until today to join in but I stopped receiving PM's from interested parties for a couple days now so I think it is safe to say that the list on the OP including me is the whole group!

If no one has any objections, I can start setting up the drawings as early as now (I get nothing done at work on Fridays LOL)

12:14 PM invites are sent!

Update 12/10:
Please PM me if you need shipping information for the person you are getting a gift for! If you happen to know the person's shipping information due to prior trades or sales etc, please PM me anyway to confirm. Thanks yo :)

I'd be game, say something like max $5 value, max of $5 shipping cost anywhere in the world.

I think putting a price cap sounds good, you dont want people comparing what they spent vs what they gotten, nor comparisons between one another for getting a generous santa or smth.

I'm up for it.  Looks like everyone is US so far, so shipping would be easy.  Just make sure that everyone understands that the point is the GIVING, not the receiving.

We always try this in school, and people ALWAYS compare what they got.

Not that comparing is bad, just that someone is usually the privileged one who got a more lavish gift, and it turns into a competition on who gets a more expensive gift etc......

EDIT: hm, since everyone is in US, I shall not make a poor soul foot international shipping :D

Yes, agreed on a price cap. Something more personal would be even more awesome but that was my concern. Someone might be willing to part with something semi-rare for the sake of being nice, while someone is just getting rid of extras.

International shipping is something that's up in the air, like what some of you said, it would kinda stink for unlucky ones that has to spend more money on shipping than the gift!

Halp me set some rules!

-Has to be keyboard related (duh)
-Price min-max = ??? Suggestions?
-Exchange gift date/mail date = ??? Suggestions?

I'm glad this is generating some interest, I think it'd be fun to do something like this and everyone post what they got in the same thread. The holiday spirit and all that jazz.

If people seriously start bickering because someone gets generous, I will seriously lose faith in humanity.  Too many rules will kill this.

Anyway, this can be straightforward.

* Everyone sends their address to the leader.  Leader does the matching.
* Price target is 5-10 bucks.
* Gifts should go out by, say... Dec 12th
* Gifts should have a keyboard component but I don't see why other generally geeky things can't be included

Why? How about intra-continental Secret Santa/Imaginary Holiday Gift-Giving Personification?

Of course, you'd have to disclose your continent!  ;)

Don't be scared by international shipping, people. It's not that difficult or expensive. I do it all the time when I buy/sell things here. We don't want to exclude anyone just because they live in a remote geographic area.

Me wants to join............

But international correspondence makes the shipping more complicated, and Christmas season may equate to more lost mail (esp when flying around the world)

And when you are the only one in that country who joins, your recipient will prolly know anyway  :)) :))

We're ALL International.  You just need ONE person willing to ship to you, and I count three or four who've already said they would.

It's only a secret until you receive the item. I don't think we need to make this "Mystery Santa" or something. Unless mkawa wants to coordinate it. ;D

The secret part is that you don't know who has your name until you receive your gift.

To make this as transparent as I can. I think I will use drawnames.com to set up who gets who. So that way I get to be in this too :) Then I'll hold everyone's information so people can PM me about who/where to ship to. I will probably tell a designated person my shipping info so whoever drew me will ask him and not me about my shipping info -____-

Does that sound okay?
