I'm guessing that there're a lot of programmers among us

Let me start first, I work in IT support and hence use keyboard
about, uh, 160 hours a month? Not to mention after-work computing,
hey we're geeks!

Recently I'm planning to build a new Linux system from the ground up
and I want the best & most value components, including the input
devices as well hence my search for the ultimate keyboard.

I program telephone switches and spend most of the day on a laptop. At the office I use the ibm m4-1 , in the field its the laptop keyboard. At home I currently use the filco tenless with black alps. At least until I change my mind.

I'm a front end web developer and graphic designer, with a bit of focus in interactivity (in the non-flash fashion). I spend so much time in my computer, I find myself making excuses to eat at the computer desk, even when I'm not using my computer.

Personally I am with a web development agency for some years now. I do translations from English to German but also do some basic web development. Some of the stuff I work on is pretty shady.

Another student here. Though it's the summer at the moment. So I'm not doing a lot of studenting right now. I'm working in a cinema as a summer job at the moment. And before that, I worked in a bookmakers. And no, not the kind that makes reading material, I mean a betting office. That was... interesting, to say the least.

I work for a non-profit organization that assists students in schools. Budgets are low and staffing is limited so I end up doing some programming, data analysis, web development, graphic design, general IT and office support, trainings, mural design, service project planning, and maintenance (painting walls, building cabinets, fixing the company van, etc). I end up doing pretty much whatever I can to help out.

On the side I build websites and furniture for friends and do some hobbyist programming, right now mainly a fighting game engine and character builder, something to test responsiveness of game controllers, and a little program that enhances clipboard functionality in windows.

I consider my job a perfect fit since my hobbies are as random and disconnected as my responsibilities at work :-D

I do give them hints... when they comment on the "Old keyboard" that sits on my counter (a Wang 724, also typing this on one at home while I service my Model M's). Once they type on it, they usually end up coming back in to say they have a Model M now...

Although one of my regulars picked up some sort of Terminal keyboard (No details I'm afraid), and is happily modding it. (He's an EE by trade).

I must have had about 15 converts this year.

And yes, my clleagues think I'm mad. Bringing my own keyboard into work, the noise it makes... and then they actually use it. They all like it, but can't bring themselves to actually *buy* something even halfway decent (I keep suggesting the Dell 101's as a cheap halfway house).

As for works buyers? Not a chance... it far too "old" fo them even to look at.

It's definitely designed well, everything's where it should be! it does make things miles easier than when you had to edit everything in tape, god I'm glad I wasn't around for those days. With Protools you can just cut off all the ambient noise by select-drag and delete. Makes for much clearer sound. One of many advantages, but we always go back to tape in the end(for the masters) and really only use protools for the storage, all the effects and such are on an analogue console(SSL 8000 G+ woot) and offboard gear. Using the computer just makes everything sound so sterile....not a good thing for music cause it's all about creation not computerized perfection and accuracy!!

I'd say these days people like to throw compression and effects at things without thinking about it. 25 years ago you had to have some good folks in the studio to achieve a good, "punchy" sound, and any technical help was welcome. We use plenty of effects to make it sound professional, but still leave the original sound intact
error isn't always a bad thing, it's what makes us human, which is what people want to hear when listening to musc(or I think so anyway). Not necessarily just error(no one wants to hear someone singing off tune and pay money for it), but making it perfect when it originally is not just removes the human element which makes it interesting. Now the artist being perfect in the first place is not the same thing, this is just someone who is really good at what they do which is awesome, but even then it never sounds mechanical.

I administer Linux and Unix boxes for an academic library. Unfortunately this means a lot of house calls to folks with Dell Crapmasters. But thankfully my coworkers will tolerate all manner of keyboard clatter from my cubicle -- the only comment I've gotten was that my M10 was quieter than the AT-101W I was using during one of the periods during which the Scorpius had a desoldered keyswitch.

I lived in Japan for seven years, but in an unenlightened state. I didn't know about the joys of a truly good board until I returned to the US. Oh well, I was pretty poor in Japan and wouldn't have been able to afford those sexy boards anyway.

IMO, it is one of the better jobs out there. I'm in Silicon Valley, and get to work with some of the smartest engineers in the world, and learn about the best technology a few years before everyone else. If you love to write, learn about new technology and argue with the people who work at the Patent and Trademark Office, then this is the job for you.

Sure. I have two different engineering degrees, and I worked as a programmer for a few years. I got bored with that and decided to go to law school. Best decision I've made.

I got bored with engineering and went back to the humanities in grad school

Mixed results

Best personal decision I ever made. As for career, that is to be determined.
I always liked law though. Took a business law class in college and loved it. For a long time patent law was my backup plan in my escape from engineering, as it is for most engineers looking for a change, I think. Its either that or an MBA usually. I made the leap back into the humanities, which was interesting and different.

"Interesting and different" indeed! From engineering to humanities is big 180. I bet that was fun. If you ever decide to consider law school again, I'd be happy to share my thoughts with you about this via private email. Its a fulfilling experience, and, if you have a background in CS, EE or something like that, you'll basically have job security for life. And if you happen to also be fluent in Mandarin, then you'll probably wind up being the defacto ruler of the universe. ;-)

Though I guess law school is always an option that is out there, only 2 years or so of school. Lets see if I can keep a roof over my head as a teacher first, lol.

I write systems software in assembler on z/OS. Hard to believe, but there are still a few of us doing it. It's actually the best and most appropriate language for the job since z/OS is an assembler machine.

I used to actually get paid to write object code and I preferred that in some ways but not many jobs are left doing that.

We never outgrew our picture books of big trucks and locomotives.

That an AC4400CW or an AC6000CW? I'm leaning towards the latter, but my Diesel Spotter's Guide is in pieces.

I am / was a travelling salesman doing 35,000 miles a year doing essential oil brokerage and some long-term contracts because I'm a phytopharmacologist but the market has contracted immeasurably here in the UK thanks to competition from abroad and trading conditions are both sporadic and uncertain.

My back up jobs are as a travelling aromatherapist selling volatile oils but online and pharmacy sales have virtually priced me out of the market because I am basically in a luxury service niche.

My other 'vocation' is hot water extraction carpet-cleaning and that is dying a death now as well because there's so much less through put.

I hate carpet-cleaning because It's a very physically demanding job, but as one can earn upto £700 to £1000+ a day, I only have to work a handful of days a month to keep my head above water ( pun intended .)

and i cancelled the cable service! so i can't post much until i get that sorted out.

and i'm moving! tomorrow. but none of my keyboards are for sale. it's not that dire. yet. i threw away the capacitive keytronic because it is trash and is not worth bringing along to my new place.

"Trash" is pretty subjective, especially in a group of collectors.

On the one hand, I would like better rubber sleeves for my ancient Key Tronic board, but on the other, I can't see that yours'd be significantly newer, so I wouldn't be willing to pay a whole lot. I probably would have paid shipping to get your board... which still may not have made it worth your time. :-)

Originally, I'm an orientalist, specialized in Sanskrit (ancient Indian) language. After my master, I worked in an advertising agency as copywriter. I left the job and, as I coded for fun since I was 10 years old (I started with Basic, Cobol and dBase on an IBM model 5150), and as I used to code in PHP and JavaScript for my own websites, I've decided to become freelance web developer. But I'm still earning money with copywriting and proof-reading (in French, naturally).

Sound engineer. Video editor. AV Technician. Now Comp Sci student.

I have no idea what I want to do, but it's not mixing bands and abusing my ears, carrying gear, crawling through roofspaces pulling cable, trying to cover up poor camera work or running AV at stuffy conferences. I'm not entirely sure that I don't want to be a programmer, but I strongly suspect that I don't. Network security appeals because criminals are getting smart, companies are getting scared...and I want to make a lot of money

Oh, and I should say that I have been self-employed for the past 10 years, which is all of my working life. Hooray!

When I was younger I wanted to be a JCB digger driver and I think I still do, to some extent.

Tell me about it. I wanted to be a teacher after college (I have a B.A. in History with a minor in Classical Civilizations), but they didn't want liberal arts majors at the time (they fill those roles with coaches around here), so I chose the career path I'm on now. In San Antonio, you're not kidding. I used to play baseball, so maybe I could be a coach. Then, I would have a good reason to carry around a bat. I used to have a principal when I lived in Illinois (his name was Mr. Votrain, we used to call him Mr. Voltron) that carried around a 9 iron. We used to think he would hit kids with it. I remember one time he was practicing his golf swing in a hallway, and he took out an Exit sign. It was pretty funny.

The first of the keyboards that I bought was a (non-mechanical) Enermax Aurora. It's a scissor-switch keyboard (laptop style) that I can use for work if the others turn out to be too loud (it's an open style office).

I then splashed out on getting a Unicomp SpaceSaver shipped over from the USA ($55 for shipping, ouch) which should be arriving sometime this week. Finally, there's a Cherry G80-3000(insert letters I can't remember here). I'll write up my experiences with both when I get them.

I'm also looking at a Filco. There's a few problems with this, though. First off, they just started selling in the UK at The Keyboard Company (strangely enough). However, they still only have a US layout. They also sell them at a price which converts to $185.5, which is a bit steep - I could have the same one shipped over from the states for less than that! I also would think I'd want a tenkeyless brown / blue switch one, which they don't have stock of yet :\.

Actually, Enterprise Vault. Unless you've had a need or worked with a company who has had a need to archive files / e-mails you probably haven't heard of it. It's not a "consumer" product

Heard of it, but never used it. Most of Symantec's Commercial orientated products are OK. The AV is actually quite good. But I still reserve the right to paste Norton AV every now and again ;-)

Regular reader, just to busy/lazy to post...

I'm a Software Engineer at Seiko Epson in Japan. On the other side of the planet (Canada) I'm a Computer Engineer student (doing a 7 year undergrad degree...).

I work on mostly internal development stuff. Things like drivers for firmware that doesn't work (the specifications aren't much better). As well as image processing/testing algorithms and all the flowery GUI stuff that's required. I also work on MICR and MSRW stuff.
I usually work with Windows but I did write a Linux driver a few months ago for OpenSUSE.

I also worked for Xandros Corp. in Ottawa for a year (mostly KDE stuff). I'm more of a Linux guy (Arch).

I'll probably start a tech company after I finish up university (whenever that'll be).

I've been typing since 1972, professionally since 1990, and still haven't learned to touch type. I didn't even notice home row bumps on computer keyboards until 99 or so.
