Let me be more specific, when someone lies about me in hopes to make me look bad because I declined to trade with them in the past :)

Sooner or later, if one trades or sells long enough, one will run into The Buyer(s) From Hell. Often disguised as the Window-Shopper or Tire-Kicker From Hell. One is quite right to blow them off immediately upon seeing the red flags go up. One is also right to be upset upon seeing untruths or false insinuations posted about oneself.

Especially when one is only 18" tall... ;D

Just kidding of course, being only 4" tall meself (that is, until fully manifested)  :))

Hehe, just of really use because of all the information gathering he did every single day via texting me until he became completely unresponsive.

I know the feeling. A while back I sold a really sweet, like-new bolt-modded Model M to a woman who then immediately wrote to me demanding to know:
"HI  I  JUST RECE  THE KEYBOARD  WHY  ARE THE  LTRS  LIKE  THIS   DO I   GET  USED  TO  IT" (complete and exact quote from her first email to me after receiving it)
(apparently she didn't know about Caps Lock, despite claiming to be a typist for over 40 years -- see below)

followed by:

"is   the  keyboard alined differently  as  you can see I am making  mistakes"

then:

"I  am sure  I will  get use  to  it.    I  returned  2  others  which  were  in horrible  shape.    I  have  been typing  for  over  40  yrs  I will  get used to again  I   am  sure love the  sound  of  it................"

and finally: (well, almost finally -- there were several more from her that were quite insulting and vulgar)

"I am  very  sorry  to  have  to say  this  but I  am afraid I  will
have to  return  the   keyboard.  I work for a demanding attorney  who
expects  me  to type fast  and  am  making too  many errors."

She returned the keyboard in a thin-walled, crappy, previously-used-and-previously-crushed box that was barely bigger than the keyboard, which was wrapped in one layer of brown Kraft paper only with absolutely no padding whatsoever around the keyboard other than a couple of wadded-up pieces of paper over the keys. It arrived with internal damage due to poor packing -- one of the two molded posts that engage and position the steel backplate portion of the internal assembly had been completely sheared off. This was no doubt due to excessive impact force causing the steel plate to act as a guillotine, chopping off the plastic stud.

Upon receiving it, I put the keyboard through exhaustive testing but could not duplicate any of her complaints, despite the damage she had inflicted through her extreme negligence and stupidity. She opened a Resolution case against me through PayPal, but I fought it and won. Sometimes truth prevails, after all... :)

Some people shouldn't be allowed to buy keyboards, glad it worked out for you though.

Thanks. I mean the guy ended up being a nice guy though it was kind of inconsiderate for someone to say they are going to buy it then talk about the details and ask so many questions with personal texts then suddenly disappear because even if I can sell it for the SME price to another person, I can't just sell it because it would have been rude of me if I decide to sell it to someone if I was under the assumption that he was going to purchase it.

In my (entirely anecdotal) experience, that is the first time that I've heard Paypal siding with the seller. That's a win!

I haven't had any issues with the marketplace forums yet, it just seems like no one is selling anything I want to buy.

Yeah, best to be nice -- but not *too* nice -- to those who waste your time and effort.

There was at least one case on here where someone bought something off of someone then tried to do a charge back claiming identity theft and PayPal eventually sided with the seller but it was an ordeal, there could have been a couple people who dealt with the same guy but my memory fails me.

I was one of the many that got hit by the same dude.  I know there was more, but I can only think of moose as well.  Dude got banned for it.  Part of the deal is even if you win the paypal dispute, if said person used a CC, they can dispute it as a fraudulent purchase and CC definitely don't care about the seller, so that's a 3 - 6 month process of them even accepting that there could be something wrong on the purchaser's side.  I'm dealing with a bit of that right now through mimic, actually, too.

I noticed the same thing, recently I've received a ton of offers to buy caps I have listed for sale despite explicitly saying that they aren't. Also some really low ball trade offers.

Edit: All new users.

In my (entirely anecdotal) experience, that is the first time that I've heard Paypal siding with the seller. That's a win!

It took several weeks to appeal, since they had already given her a full refund based on her "Not As Described" claim -- for which she had provided no details at all, no specific complaint. She also failed to return the USB converter that had been included, and the styrofoam inserts that were included and which would have protected the keyboard from such damage.

Her refund was reversed because:
1) She did not return all items that were included in the listing,
2) She caused damage by her improper packing (I supplied photos to PayPal),
3) I provided detailed photos of the keyboard taken before it was shipped to her, and
4) I sent to PayPal a notarized sworn statement attesting to my side of the story.

So to all who sell honestly on eBay, take heart! It can be done if you are in the right; but you must appeal and provide all the material required to get a bad decision reversed.

Yessir. It appears that paypal makes the dispute process quite easy for the buyer and quite difficult for the seller. Again, just my anecdotal experience but I've heard enough Seller-Nightmare stories regarding paypal that I'm hesistant to use paypal exclusively for selling.

Good lord.  Glad you won!

i took a long break from the site when life got busy, and have been kind of halfway back lately, so i bumped my marketplace thread to try and move some excess stuff. i had a couple normal, good transactions... and two SUPER LAME weirdo ones. i'm talking insane demands, super rude haggling, crazy lowball offers, etc. both from users who were relatively new to the site. i've never had that problem in the past, with anyone, regardless of how long they've been here or if they've done a lot of buying or selling before. is this a new phenomenon? did i just get unlucky and roll snake eyes? i'm tempted to just throw a bunch of disclaimers on my sale thread, but i don't wanna come off as unfriendly.

Language changes with time. If enough people start using a word, it becomes a word. Therefore even if its not a word now, It could become a word in the future.

language is subjective, just like replacing letters with words in ones made up 1nternet name  ;)

Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones

Well, ignoring most of the comments and just answering the OP,

I feel that most people operate under "it can't hurt to ask" even if explicitly stated.

Another issue is that newer members probably don't know nearly as much about the prices of some of the rarer goods.

for the more popular stuff below 200, I'd say yes. But items with prices over that are probably looking for a niche buyer. I just read a thread with a custom keyboard that was listed for $450 originally. Yes it was beautiful without a doubt, but not many would actually pay that and he has since dropped the price. Is it really wrong for someone ask for less than the asking price if it has been sitting in the classified for some time? That's up to the seller and how bad he wants to get rid of it.

i think one thing that really bothers me about it is that the marketplace didn't used to be about scoring a deal so much as the next person taking it and me getting my investment back. especially on items that are already being offered below market value, trying to wedge another X bucks out of the seller is, to me, disrespectful. the goal shouldn't be to screw over a fellow member of the community. if you want to haggle or feel good about saving yourself 5 bucks, go to a flea market or shop on amazon.

in spite of all that, i don't mind that people ask so much as the i get attitude back when i say no and explain why. as if i'm the ******* for not wanting to sell something for less than half what i bought it for.

idk I think the value of certain things has changed ALOT in the last year or so and so its kinda a lot harder to judge the prices of things, especially if your relatively new or have no idea what you or someone else paid for that same item months and months ago.

I remember a seller wanting gift only to avoid the fees, which is a risk if you dont know the seller that well personally as you lose fraud protection. Also, as already mentioned in this thread, even established members arent always trustworthy.

Paying $250 for a red Esc key just because it's red or rare is IMO positively insane.

Yet it happened, and (someone may correct me if I'm wrong) but like a week or two after or something, someone found GMK and then yeah...

Proving that some folks have more money than common sense IMHO.

I mean, the GMK hook up seemingly came out of knowhere and before then they were hella rare (from what I understand)

Unless this has changed very recently this is the de facto standard around geekhack. I've never not done a PayPal as gift, as buyer or seller.

I dealt with a few where the buyer pays the fee.

I do believe paying as goods is encouraged now unless it's a small amount of money.

Here in the US, PayPal charges 2.9% on a sales transaction. In the vast majority of cases I would presume the actual amount of the fee is about what a McDonald's meal or two costs, or less. To quibble over paying it is IMO quite infantile.

I cover the PayPal fees in anything I sell.  I think it's just petty to make the buyer cover them.
