Just a quick status update

Tiers and suppliers I've heard back from both the AliExpress vendor and you can now see the 5000 and 10000 count prices in the aliexpress shop. We're able to cut a few cents of each LED for all colors if we can get a poop ton of diodes. I also just found the reply from a possible alternative SIP socket vendor in China and am confirming some samples.

GB things I don't yet know the timeline for samples but I expect that I'll be extending the deadline for everything into late November so that I can check them out. I'm also a bit behind on getting the order confirmation and update forms up. Mostly because I've been stuck on Windows and the tools I use for CSV aren't as fun without a proper shell. I'll do my best to get that out tonight along with an FAQ post.

Happy November everyone! If you're in the US make sure you vote and stuff.
Nice work dude. I will be adding an order a bit later.

I've never been a big fan of publicising everyone's order without their permission but it's also nice to be able to see where orders are at overall. To that end, an anonimized order list is about to be published. Participants will get a PM shortly with the code that represents their order.

My apologies if this is frustrating for anyone but I find it vastly preferable to disclosing people's spending habits.

You could always just post where we're at numbers wise and shoot off order size via PM if someone wants to know how many of what they ordered.

International orders are now being accepted! Thanks hwood34 for stepping up to fulfill them. The first participants can now check and update their orders using the information in the OP. Pricing has come down slightly already. I think we have a solid chance of hitting 5000 count for at least cyan and sky blue.

There were some questions about the actual color of the LEDs. I've done my best to be honest about the fact that I haven't seen them yet. The cyan have been reported as "minty" by one user in the IC, but also as a jade green by another user.

The pink are the ones I know the least about, if you ordered some for yourself do please let us know, are they warmer than a magenta or pretty much the same as other magenta / purplepink LEDs?

The sky blue LEDs are reportedly very very light blue.

My initial order of 100 each has shipped. When it arrives I'll do my best to take color-accurate photos against white cards and in my keyboards and balance them on a calibrated monitor, as well as get a few people with good eyes for color to give subjective descriptions.

Oh, and current totals:

Code: [Select]
+------------+-----------+-----------+---------------+-------------+
|            | Cyan LEDs | Pink LEDs | Sky Blue LEDs | SIP Sockets |
| TOTALS     |      3182 |      2275 |          3055 |        3417 |

Oh, it just occurred to me. You need two SIP sockets to mount one LED.

If you ordered thinking you were ordering in pairs, let me know and I'll just double your order. Should the form change so sockets are ordered in pairs?

EDIT: For now the form now tells you that you need two per LED.

I'm actually kind of disappointed with the cyan LEDs. I hope someone can take some good pictures of it to show everyone else.

Seems way too green, doesn't scream cyan to me.

Still waiting on the test batch of LEDs to arrive and going over specs for the possible alternate SIP vendor. They don't have sockets with the same length insulation jacket as the MIL MAX sockets so I've requested samples of the nearest upper and lower neighbor. Here's hoping the next communique includes a sample confirmation.

Updated OP and status post as well but just to let y'all know numbers are looking good but given that we're seeking an alternate SIP vendor and there are multiple reports describing the cyan LEDs as "minty", "jade", and "way too green", I think extending the deadline until I've got samples of everything in hand is the best thing to do. Qualitative descriptions of colors and attempts at color-accurate photographs will follow as soon as I've got product in hand. I'll also be taking photos of the SIP socket samples in switch and mounted in a Duck Eagle PCB.

Hit me up with any questions or issues in the meantime.

I'm with you, I also want everyne to be informed. I'm also curious what a checkerboard of cyan and sky blue LEDs will do for the perceived green-ness.

How does this work exactly? Do the colored LEDs just get "inserted" in the SIP socket? I'm building a GON, and am thinking of sourcing the SIP LEDs separately just because of the wider selection of colors offered elsewhere.

pretty much. you of it like a tight fitting socket for a plug, i read that analogy somewhere. also when clipping the LEDs, clip them long and slowly adjust so that they fit snug. cutting them too short can make it too lose the LED may not function properly when you press the key it's in. that guide did mention this but i'll mention it again, place an LED in the sockets as a place holder so that the SIP sockets are oriented and spaced correctly before you begin soldering everything together.

Hi so I'm kinda newb about SIP sockets.

If I want it for a 60% keyboard, would it be safe to order 200 or is that overkill?

Also, price is trivial when it comes to having the easiest SIP sockets to work with, as well as build quality. Have you confirmed on the source of SIP sockets?

60% has ~61 keys, so you'd need 122 sockets.  I doubt you'd need many extras, if any, as I don't really see many situations in which you'd be breaking these.

Buy at least 5-10% extra in case you damage some when removing them from the housing.

Yeah, I definitely break a few getting them out of the housing. There's a slight possibility with this new vendor that

- They might deliver us sip sockets cut into twos already
- The jacket might be slightly shorter (keeping the same pitch,   socket pin length, and tail length) such that they fit without removing the insulation jacket

I'm waiting on samples to confirm this. They didn't have a jacket size the same length as MIL MAX so I've got samples of slightly shorter and slightly longer.

Yes they do. You just clip the LED leads and put them into the SIP sockets.

Yup. Bear in mind that if you have to swap out the entire switch, you need to desolder the SIP sockets as well as the switch pins. On a board with switch cutouts using SIP sockets removes the need for any desoldering to remove the top case of the switch. Instead of desoldering the LED, you just lift it out with a pliers. :thumb:

I have done a couple builds with sip sockets and I tried to document the process as well as I could. You may find useful tips and tricks in there for your builds. In the 75% build I really improved my SMD technique and tried to give tips as best I could. Hopefully this will be useful for people who are doing builds.

Perfect. I'm in for this =)

I shouldn't need to desolder the SIP socket if I am just swapping stems and springs on compatible plates right?

:thumb:

Perfect. I'm in for this =)

I shouldn't need to desolder the SIP socket if I am just swapping stems and springs on compatible plates right?

Yes, this is correct  :)

Awesome. Might need to buy more sip sockets and LED's then. Or maybe 900 is enough :p

Just a quick non-update. Still waiting on the LED and SIP samples to arrive. I will let everyone know when they do. I've been slack about updating the order list in this Mad Max post-GH-Outage apocalypse. I'll be doing so later today.

Cheers,
Steven!

People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Oh sorry, I thought you were asking to order those and just didn't see the form.

So the LEDs arrived today! The sky blue are indeed very white-ish but still cast a blue light. I think they'll look alright reflecting on stainless plates. The cyan LEDs looked cyan at first but then I compared them with the sky blue ones and now I have no idea. They look terrible together, which dashes my hopes at checkerboarding them. Putting the two together makes the sky blue look white and the cyan look green.

The pink ones look very pink to my mind. While there are hints of magenta, they're not at all straight up bright purple. Which is pretty awesome. I'm working tomorrow and Monday and have an exam on Thursday so I'm not making any promises to get properly colored photos up until the end of next week but I'll attempt to do so as soon as I can.

I'm still waiting on the SIP samples. Will update again and set a buy deadline when I know what the dilly is there.

I have the Cyan as well and when I fixed it in it looks green-ish. Hard to explain but it still looks nice. Interested in the pink one though.  :)
