[IC] Post-Nuclear Data Keycaps and Set Ideas
« on: Wed, 19 November 2014, 15:55:50 »
This GB seems to be going very well (he said, typing on his Nuclear Data Green set on a QFS with MX greens).

I'll just leave this next picture (from the same source as the terminal picture above) here in case anyone is thinking about starting another SA GB ;)

Honestly, that blue doesn't draw me in as much as the deep green color of this set.

Agreed about the blue. I can't stand how much blue is forced upon me these days, especially with LEDs. Ugh. So jarring and cold.

What I'm really looking forward to is brown.

A nice chocolate or 70s brown would be killer in SA. Hell, any of the 70s colors.

Hm.... so, you may be interested in Matt3o's proposal to do a contoured SA profile Retro set? :D Like Coffee and Cream.

Also, I've got an idea for a brown contoured SA set brewing, but it'll be a while before I even post the IC. I'm going darker, though, almost black.

Whats the difference from the filco SAs then? they are the darkest of browns.

It'll be quite similar, but some important differences:

It won't have glued-in Costar stabilisers...  ;) Legend colour will be subtly different (and maybe base colour too), larger centred font (like this set), full contour set (Filco have Row 2 for top 2 rows, Row 3 for all others), a few nice novelties and a Brown on Cream option for alphas. May include some gold pad printing here and there. Also considering a rather interesting way to use relegendables, but still have to consult with SP on the possibilities for this and the pad printing.

Hint:
More

I'm going to be making a wooden cased 60% board for the set. Want to get all my ducks in a row before commiting to it, but it will happen if I can get the details hammered out with SP.

I love the '70s Aperture office stuff, they captured the era nicely.

That's a bit like a reverse space cadet. I missed the Round 4 SPH GB, so I may be interested in something like this, although my wallet is crying right now and needs some recovery time and a little more input.

I also had a wooden case in mind, which is another reason I would love these colors; although I'm sure the NC green caps would be beautiful on case of walnut. And that aperture cup is indeed comforting.

I did a bit of playing around with that 1976 image in GIMP and found the closest matching colours from SP's ABS range:

I was thinking something like TAA modifiers, WCK legends, TGH zxcv row, OB asdf row, YW qwer row, YCB number row and VAF Function keys with TAA legends? Could also use VAF for replacement "highlight" keys.

Like so:

82347-1

Another option, but I think I prefer the dark modifiers:

82349-2

I was experimenting with a slightly different color palette. The image below compares my suggestion with the original and Oobly's. I eliminated the difference between the brown of the "1" and the background for simplicity. I also liked a slightly brighter blue.

I like the brown. Its so insanely unique. Add that to the possible designs for sure.

Add the ability to purchase blanks (ergodox, odd layouts) and I'd hit that so fast.....

Edit. But I can see how Brown would prevent this from meeting MOQ

A brown based set with features like this will catch fire. People will probably try to tell themselves no at first, but the more you look at it the better it seems. Plain brown would probably only snag a few, but this concept has a vibe, retro character and a comforting appeal that will eat at wallets.

I am getting way too excited.

I'm digging these mock-ups. Especially this one:

It's like something you'd find in a reading nook in the musty corner of an old library   ^-^

How are you all making these keyboard examples? Is there a website that does this? I tried my hand with MSPaint and the color suction tool grabbed a different color from SP's color chip pictures each time I tried because it's grainy. Do we have a more standardized (solid) color pallet to work from?

I also quite like the second one, although darker legends (brown?) on the yellow keycaps would improve legend visibility.

How are you all making these keyboard examples? Is there a website that does this? I tried my hand with MSPaint and the color suction tool grabbed a different color from SP's color chip pictures each time I tried because it's grainy. Do we have a more standardized (solid) color pallet to work from?

The color swatches drop down will allow you to choose from available SP colors.

I also quite like the second one, although darker legends (brown?) on the yellow keycaps would improve legend visibility.

How about this:

Cool design, would definitely be in for something like this since it seems so different.

#2 and dark brown though seemed most appealing to me, so something along these lines:
Keyboard layout editor saved layout

I changed it to dark legends on all colored caps, and I went with the slightly darker, but not as warm TBN brown.  And the "A" and "1" "9" "7" "6" seem distracting on the above layout, but I can see why people would like that.  As long as there was an option to go one way or the other I can't see anyone having a problem.

The TBN is nice as well. It guess a vote on which one would be in order.

The "A" was a mistake. The "1976" would be a specialty with plain brown also included.

Ah, ok, I figured it was to get all the colors in the WASD cluster, or something like that..

And yea, a vote on the browns would be good, as they all seem to have a different feel, I don't think any of them are bad.  Though what would a TKL set for this layout look like?  I just added in the keys on and it looked something like this: another layout link, but the function row on something like a lightsaver, or a 7-bit layout phantom would be all messed up which I guess is a bit unavoidable.

Nice color scheme. Looks like a chocolate bar with a wrapper. I like the brown too, mainly because I want a brown SA blank to put on my MX switch sampler.

I think the 1976 set should be moved into it's own IC and we should see if any nuke R2s are in order/preferred.

For the benefit of both sets.

I did a couple of mock-ups based on roughly the original colours, using SP BFP and BBQ.

Agreed.  1976 is different enough that it should have its own IC.

Agreed. Can we also discuss other post-nuclear novelty possibilities beyond the Fallout series here? Like Mad Max, Tank Girl, or...Fifth Element?  :))

Sorry for hijacking the thread temporarily with the 1976 discussion. I created a new IC for the 1976 set here.

How about BFP legends on the BBQ caps and BBQ legends on BFP instead of white.

I feel I'm a bit late for throwing out this idea, but I've found that I'm rather fond of key bumps vs deep dish home keys. Even though I can tell that I am on the home keys when I really think about it, my fingers still feel strangely lost and it is unsettling.

Would anyone else be interested in going in on some home keys with bumps that match this set (the nuclear set)?

Even blank bumps would work. I just want my fingers to feel at home.

You're going to have to use all BLACK coloured text due to the light blue colour used here.  Goal is to easily spot the keys at night when typing, hence make it so  :thumb: .

Those colours were based on the terminal in the OP.

However there doesn't seem to be enough interest in a blue set - just look what happened when someone suggested brown!

Those blue keycaps would be perfect for the JD45.  In DSA, however.
