Update (2/5) The group buy is live on PMK! http://www.pimpmykeyboard.com/deals/1976/

The idea for this set was first discussed when this thread was innocently hijacked after FingerPunch posted this image, and I suggested it would be a great subject for a keycap set.  Oobly and I suggested SP ABS color palettes:
82426-0

unoab suggested using TBN instead of TGH for the brown which is a little deeper brown is also quite nice.

Oobly and I both presented a few ideas which can been seen in the original thread here and here. This design seemed to have the most appeal.
82428-1

This thread is to discuss possible layouts and colors.

Updated (1/27): Here are the potential kits for this set:
88871-2
88873-3
88875-488877-5
88880-6
88882-7
88884-8
88886-9
88888-10
88890-11
88892-12
88894-13
88896-14
88898-15
88900-16

Still loving that gradient. Even though I typically don't like brown, I think it really works here. Would love to see this in SA or GMK

Haha, this set is adorable. Very vintage looking. I'd support this.

That was my thought as well. I'd love this on a sym sgg.

What are we going to do about F-keys, the arrow block, and the numpad?

Personally, I would like a more balanced distribution of blue/brown, kinda like this:

though I could see how the accent gradient could be a bit overbearing this way.  Either way, love the colors and love the idea.

the idea of trizkut is too much of the blue for me.

What profile should we do this in?

I despise SA/DSA, but if it were to be offered in DCS with cherry legends I'd probably buy a set instantly.

I really like the colors but the render with extra blue is a bit too much, also I put in a vote for SA.

I like it... it's so too bad GMK doesn't have brown anymore in their stock colors. I've been semi curious about SA but nothing so far had really grabbed me on colorway/kit price yet. As always I won't even think about SP DCS.

The whole point is to make it SA. This was a design idea that spun off the Nuclear Data GB and then spun off the Post Nuclear IC thread...SA is the only way

Do you dislike DCS? I see that many sets are in DSA. I never had different profile keycaos other than stock ones (DCS I think) and not sure how sphericals will feel.
SA will be even more interesting.

To the design- I really like it! Prefer the first recommended layout over the second mockup. I'm  just thinking what color the keyboard case should be to fit this set perfectly.

I agree that VBV is a better color. When I get some time I'll play around with the layout designer again. One thing to keep in mind is that while it uses the correct colors from SP's palettes, it's only correct on the base part of the keys, the keytops are lighter than the correct color. That's why I modified my mockups so the tops matched the bases. I have good hope for this set idea, think it could be an awesome one :-)

I noticed that yesterday and actually posted in the editor thread to see if that was by design...seems like it gives a false impression of the actual appearance of the board. Here is a comparison using my layout with corrected colors.

Can we see it on a TKL or full size in addition to 60%?  I'm not sure if the diagonal design will work as well.  Might want to keep that in mind as you go.

I'm with Data on this one. Can you make some mock-ups with larger boards? The only board that is even remotely 60% is an FC660M. Other than that, I like the colour scheme. ;)

Would be the first brown colorway that I'd actually consider buying -- especially in SA Row 3.

@engicoder: great work on the adjusted colours, I'm not quite as adept at this kind of graphic work. I just replaced the inner colour with the same value as the outer on mine. I really like the 1976 colored mods and also the single 1976 key! Nice work.

I played around and came up with these (using VBV and OBC like engicoders sets instead of VBF and YW)...

82518-0

82520-1

I added the wood background as I thought it suited the set. We still need to put some thought into the arrows, edits and numpad, although with the gradient versions they could just follow the same pattern.

If you can get a nice reverse diagonal on the right side of the board to match the one on the left of engcoders design I think that could work nicely.

I understand your concern. I think that Oobly's horizontal layout will be very nice on a full board as you could continue the theme all the way across. It would likely feel more complete than any full board diagonal design could. The diagonal will probably be best on 60% or TKL.

That being said, here is my first shot at a full 104 layout (Edit: a number of numpad options)

I think I prefer the first one. You should do a full board layout, as that is where the this layout would shine over mine.

If you can get a nice reverse diagonal on the right side of the board to match the one on the left of engcoders design I think that could work nicely.

I tried this, but nothing looked as good as the gradient on the left. Furthermore, anything that looked even slightly ok on a 104 made no sense as a TKL.

Agreed. I think the TKL is great, but I'm not sure how to make this work on a 104 other than just going fudgeville on the whole right side. This was my attempt at something other than all brown.

Love how it looks on a larger board. Really into the color scheme as is :). I'm actually not digging the vertical color scheme though.

Agreed. I think the TKL is great, but I'm not sure how to make this work on a 104 other than just going fudgeville on the whole right side. This was my attempt at something other than all brown.

Agreed on the TKL, and I quite like the all brown.

What about inverting the colors on the numpad ( all blue with brown text ) with a matching red enter.
eh o well

Aww, don't diss this great idea with the thread title-- it's not garish, it's just not boring!  I love the color striped numpads on the 104 layouts.  I vote that you rename it to 1979, so the typeface can have its own theme song (
) and it can get away from the USA bicentennial associations.

It's a throwback, so naturally SA profile is being considered.

SA is an awful profile IMHO no matter how retro it looks. Just my $.02

I vote that you rename it to 1979, so the typeface can have its own theme song (

That is a terrible idea.
1) This set is supposed to evoke the 1970s, so a 90s grunge band does not fit with that regardless of what their song is named.
2) The logotype won't work as well with a 9 instead of a 6.
3) The U.S. bicentennial was hardly the only thing going on in 1976, so we shouldn't feel the need to avoid references to that year for other things.

DSA Retro is TBN, so I vote we stick with TGH. I believe Matt3o may be running an SA Retro set in full sculptured form once the molds for the shifts are ready (early next year).

All Row 3 SA will suit this set very well, IMHO. It suits the period of the theme perfectly. Maybe there could be a 2nd round in another profile if it proves popular.

Raw data for the Layout Editor with full size layout (rough draft):

If it's okay with engicoder, I'd like him to continue to run with this as my time is too limited right now to run a proper GB. Just dropped some ideas and hopefully he can take it from here.

Here's an attempt at numpad diagonal:

FWIW, I think the Browntown (diagonal with all brown numpad) and inverse gradient (with the yellow above the spacebar row) are the best two schemes (actually I can't decide between the gradients, right now I prefer the normal one, but the inverse does match the original image better).
