Title: Glove mod for cherry profile spacebar.
Post by: T0mb3ry on Sun, 17 June 2018, 13:36:49
Hello fellow geeks,

in this topic i will show you how to eliminate pinging sound of a cherry spacebar.

Issue
Many of you wondered why a cherry spacebar has such awefull noice if bottomed out. Even by applying band aid mod does not solve this issue.

Cause
i've done testing before and i did learn what the cause for that are the stability ribs of a cherry spacebar which do smash the top of the switch if bottomed out. Clipping these off will not solve the issue since the switch inside does start to bottom out and it sounds even worse. You may say band aid mod might help but it will not, because put on properly spacebar the stabs will never bottom out. This applies to all keys with stabs (actually every cherry profile key is hitting the top housing of the switch). However its the spacebar which causes so much noice. Thats because of its length which does amplifies the sound.

Solution
The only ways to eliminate that spacebar sound is to use: Silent switches, QMX Clips/Zilentios or silent rings. Tho those are solutions with some issues. Silent switches are not always the case and QMX Clips or silent rings do reduce the travel distance of the stems and some of you might not like it. I for example want to have full travel distance and for what i suggest to make kind of "silent ring" out of some thin rubber material. That should just soften the collision of the stabillity rib with switch top case.

I find out the easiest way is just to buy a pair of thin rubber glove and make silent ring using a hole puncher. I think a balloon would work too.
But anyway this is what it does: https://www.instagram.com/p/BkIquxsDjCr/?taken-by=t0mb3ry_gh

Its easy and effective.

Thanks for reading :)

Appreciated the conciseness of that linked video. No fluff, it's perfect.

Awesome mod. The video is an example of elegance too. Straight to the point.

Recently I have been installing a QMX clip on all the spacebars of my boards, different means, same end.

T0mb3ry - this is awesome :)
I expect this would work for Topre switches too.

So the rubber "silent ring" goes on the stem of the keycap? Like an O-ring?

Exactly. It is basically an o-ring but a very thin one.

I have used a "stretched" landing pad until now
anyway, excellent idea.

KMK Labs.

Just a question, if you had the gmk clips (plate and pcb mount), would you still consider applying your mod or not?
thanks

I do have GMK Clips but they do shorten the travel distance. This mod here keeps the full travel distance. Otherwise this mod would make no sense. For people who like to keep the full trave distance this is the solution.

Also keep in mind i dont like oring mods or what ever. I suggest to dampen only the spacebar like this. Other keys do sound just fine and the sound of cherry profile bottoming out is very satisfying. Tho if someone wants to make whole board with this method silent then well that will work for sure.

I honestly don't know why the slit spacebar or small spacebar design has not taken hold.  Does anybody here  use both thumbs for the spacebar? There is no need for a spacebar larger than 2.5 units.  This would eliminate a lot of noise, wobble, and chatter that a 6.5 unit has.

I hope this comes at a reasonable price.
