[IC] KAMistry - Group Buy October 10th - November 10th, 2022!
« on: Sat, 18 September 2021, 11:00:03 »

GB DATE: October 10th, 2022 - November 10th, 2022

Previously, the set had been delayed, but we have now received confirmation from zFrontier/Keyreative that October 10th will be the GB date!

Hello fellow keeb enthusiasts! Straight from the realms of my overworked, sleep deprived grad student brain, I want to finally introduce you to a keycap set I have been working on all year, called KAMistry. KAMistry aims to bring elements (pun fully intended) of chemistry (and biology) into your keeb. The four main colors of the set (teal, light blue, light grey, and dark grey) were inspired by my repeated trips to my lab’s trusty -80 freezer. Because you can’t tell me you haven’t just looked at a freezer before and thought to yourself “Damn, that’s a nice looking freezer.” Complete with a grey face and a bright blue LED screen graced with a teal bezel, this gargantuan freezing lab companion was just begging to be used as an inspiration for pieces of matte PBT plastic.

As the name implies, this set will be in KAM profile. For those that are not familiar with the KAM profile, here is a diagram for you compared to KAT and Cherry. You can compare other profiles to it as well here: https://www.keycaps.info/stack

I have done my best to ensure the colors look accurate to the Pantones. However, do keep in mind that color can vary depending on the screen that it is viewed on. The best way to see what a color will look like as the end product is to check the pantone code in a physical guide. Samples will be ordered for comparison to those pantones!

Digital Carpentry wrist rest collab!
KAMistry has teamed up with the amazing Digital Carpentry to design a professional, wooden, science-themed wrist rest. Samples are below! I decided to go with the benzene ring icon for mine, but you will have an option of a couple icons, including the benzene ring and atom novelty, along with an option of walnut or maple. Even cooler, you'll have options on size of the wrist rest and where you want the icon! For this sample, I wanted the hexane ring to always be visible, even when typing (top image).

The following design will be a third option available. No, it's not an actual element, but it looks darn good as one if I do say so myself.

Follow this project!

Forget needing a paid subscription to a journal. For once in science, you can get the latest updates for free! Join my NA vendor’s discord to follow updates of KAMistry.

While I may not have done something spectacular enough to receive the Nobel Prize, I do feel as though I need to thank some people for help with creating this set. So, like any good scientific paper, I would like to acknowledge the following for their help and support:

The entire PDXKBC discord. There are too many of y’all there who helped me, so I can’t list all of you unfortunately, but you have been the driving force behind this set coming to fruition.
SJ for his case file and for bouncing ideas off of.
Nathan (of GMK Iceberg fame) for answering my dumb questions about rendering.
Cadvahn for doing post-processing edits on the renders for color accuracy.
GentleBear for making materials for me in blender. He isn’t a keyboard nerd like us (yet) so I’m not sure he’ll ever see this, but his help was invaluable.
ThiccWicc for helping me with all aspects of making this set.
And of course RocketCables for answering my questions and putting up with me as I slowly figure this process out.

To-do list
Select and announce vendors
Announce wrist rest collab
Add second deskmat option
Add more renders, especially of the periodic alphas kit
Announce artisans and artisan collabs
Announce GB date
Announce pricing
Group Buy!!!

Someone else has mentioned this as well in the IC form. I will see what I can do with that. The icons there sort of make that difficult but I appreciate the suggestion!

Chemistry themed novelty text on the 40s and Ergo Text kits would be great and would lower the number of keys needed in each kit.

Sublegends on the periodic alpha kit will probably ruin the look.

Checking IC ... colors are fine .. checking IC ... lots of KAM kitting - thats totally normal ... checking IC ... Novelties match theme - mmmmok ... checking IC... accent kits are pretty interesting - whatever ... checking IC.... QAZ Kit?!

**** - uh that is pretty awesome. Any set that straight up convinces me to 3d print a board and nab a PCB is fun times. Saw Elmo's QEZ PCB and open source project and now I am over here scheming.

Really solid set - lots of cool things to check out.
It would be cool to see a QAZ render - since most images of QAZ just have mods instead of Alphas. I can use my imagination but it might be fun for others to see.

Totally agree! I have been working on a QAZ render for quite some time, just trying to get the lighting better in it, but one will definitely be up in the near future.

I'm always astounded with how fine you can make legends on KAM sets. Maybe I've been brainwashed by double-shot caps, but holy smokes those periodic legends are small.

Lots of interesting quirks with this set  :thumb:

I still need to get samples of these to make sure that they're legible, but I have been told by Keyreative that fine lines should work fine, so fingers crossed!

If only we had an element that had a Q as part of its abbreviation. I was curious so I looked it up and apparently Jod is the german word for the element iodine.

As a biochemist, I feel as though I must buy this set, looking forward to how it turns out!

Interesting, I've never heard of this. Do people just use one homing bar per hand or do they use both?

Usually just one per hand, although I have seen a few sets that offer a QWERTY homing kit with six keys, leaving only G and H as non-homing.

Middle finger homing was an Apple thing many years ago.  I find I can feel the homing keys better with my middle fingers since that’s the longest finger so it has the highest finger tip pressure.  Also, since it doesn’t have to cover as many keys, it’s a good anchor.

Agreed! It was originally much brighter in color, but contrasted too much with the blue so I found a darker shade and love it. I know there are orange keycap sets out there, but I haven't seen one in this shade.

I'd like to see the inclusion of dual 3u minibars. Also accent minibars and maybe a 1.25/1.5/1.75u accent key in each of the kits as well.

The dual 3u bars are in the spacebar kit. I was really trying to keep the price of the 40s kit down so I didn't have them in there. I don't suspect the spacebar kit will be too expensive, judging by the price quotes I have received and previously ran KAM sets, so hopefully that isnt a deal breaker for anyone who really needs them!

Oh I somehow scrolled right on by that.
I agree that they probably shouldn't be included in a 40's kit because they're not pervasive enough for that. Plus I'm hoping that 3-1-3 becomes a thing for 60's too.
