GeekHack Key Caps
« on: Mon, 07 January 2013, 12:10:34 »
UPDATE:
Thanks to sth, this post has been moved to the GeekHack Wiki and is being updated there. You can find the post at this link.

This thread will be kept open for further discussion, but the OP will not be kept up-to-date.

Original Post:
Since the launch of GeekHack, there have been many homages to our beloved community in the form of novelty keys with the "GH" branding on them.

Below is a list of the various GeekHack key caps that have been created. It's broken down by format (cherry, topre, etc.), then by type (doubleshot, dyesub) and finally by style. If you know of one that is missing, please speak up and provide as much detail as you can. Specifically, if you could include a link to the Group Buy that the key is from, or what specific SP colors were used, that would be a big help.

I'm currently on the final leg of my journey, and it's the damn RA2.0 red on white. Should be here from Singapore soon though!
Also, do you already have the valentine white on pink/white on dark pink? Don't forget those!

There are a few that aren't in that style as well. I have a black on red geek hack from keyboard story. I'll have to take some pics.
And there are also some lasered ones around. Like white gh on black.

At some point I may decided I must have the WASD etched, but for now I'm focused on the doubleshots.

More updates! There's CCnG green on white, and an older green on white that's a darker green.
And the backspace is actually dark grey.
The three modifiers I know of are white on red, black on red and orange on grey.
The secret alps I have is orange on black.

Potato of the collection. The CCnG is a little overexposed, but you can see the difference in green.

The bottom right one is the alps cap.
The top right that's black/orange/white is from qwerkeys.

@ Halverson - Congrats man . That really is an impressive collection. I can't imagine the time and effort that went into it. From that perspective, to me, it is as impressive as any of the clack collections. You are to be commended.

On a different note, does anyone know who made the key caps listed?  What made me think about that is when I added the QWERkeys edition, I wondered who else has made these in the past. Anyone know?

Ok, I updated the list and included the manufacturers for those that have been mentioned. I also broke out the R4 into three different "styles" all based on the picture Halverson posted as well as Glissant's two images from this thread.

Here's Another Question
Do most of these keys come from complete sets?  For example, is the "White on RA Red" and "RA Red on White" from the Red Alert set? I know the Toxic Set features two GEEK HACK keys for example.

I'm guessing that the answer is yes, but there are still single caps printed as well which makes me think we should also include where they came from -- if we even have that information. Do we?

Most of the variations came from individual group buys, not from sets.  demik was running them monthly for a while.  Before that, iMav did them sporadically.  You should be able to find the threads in the GB subforum.

I can take one of those 1800s off your hands. Also, still have not heard back from that site that sells army surplus items in bulk :(

When glissant was searching to complete his collection I had the same idea and no one had any keys for me. glissant was able to get everything he wanted I believe, but I think everyone likes him and I was a relative nooblet at the time before I did the Lambda key group buy. It is going to be a near impossible journey but good luck! Don't give up after a couple months like I did.

The kiwi ALPS ones came from the GHSS or GeekHack Space Saver. This keyboard was availible for a very short amount of time on a site (57something or another). They are in the WYSE font, include a matching Star key, G and H keys, as well as a small bag that acompanied the Siig Minitouch that the keys came atop of.
There is also the MKC aluminum keys, here.

Potato of the collection. The CCnG is a little overexposed, but you can see the difference in green.

The bottom right one is the alps cap.
The top right that's black/orange/white is from qwerkeys.
are you still missing the RA 2.0 GH key?

I've seen a bucklingspring geekhack keycap somewhere, but as far as I know it was selfmade from a mx one. Or does anybody know if there was a real one?

BTW, the 'geek hack' style black on grey, black on blue, orange on grey dye subbed PBT caps (as seen from Halverson's picture) are manufactured from imsto, not SP.

Are you also collecting 'G' and 'H' keys made by various manufacturers that sold to GH? (Both imsto and SP did these)

He has it at the bottom of the list, and it was part of a Siig mini touch geekhack thing. Which I need to put up a wtb thread for....
On another note! There is indeed a white on red geekhack alps cap! Can add that to the list.

I'm sorry Acetrak, I'm not tracking.

I added numbers to the list -- there are 60! -- anyway, can you tell me what numbers you're referring to?

Well, I thought about that, but since every key cap set has a "G" and an "H", wouldn't that include them all? I'm new here, so if there were specific packs made, I suppose we should add those to the list. I just don't know what they are, or how many.

Green text on white, like the one above. I don't remember exactly which GEEK HA CK keys came in ALPS. (Yes, it is GEEK HA CK) See how the letters are spaced on the keys:))

Do you mind taking a picture? I'm assuming Round 1 has the same color scheme as Round 4 but I'm not quite sure.

Ok but I think it'd probably be easier (and faster) to start a group buy for them.  SP made these so they should have all the colors down already.  Shoot, I'll probably join the GB just to get a few more myself. lol

Added Reaper's White on Blue key cap and did a few other tweaks to the list.

If anyone has any blanks they can fill on the list, I would be most appreciated. For example:
- Color Codes
- Where a key came from
- Link to the group buy (if available)
- Font used

Was just on the R4 wiki, and noticed something interesting that I think was part of the R3 GB.

"key with GEEK HACK or Geek Hack on it (depending on style).
GEEKHACK 1 unit function row

Colors per style:
ROUND3/* white on very dark gray
RETRO/* lightblue on dark gray
NOIR/* white on black
DARK/* black on very dark gray
DARK/*/ORANGE orange on very dark gray"

If those were all made, I have not seen a white on black or black on very dark gray. Anyone have any pics, or know if they were even made?

I don't see it listed, but a long time ago, there was a SP pad print keycap white lettering on black.
You can see it in halverson's picture. it's the "gh" one near the top.

It might be mis-listed as #32. Mine is not doublshot, it's pad print (I believe)

Bytheway, the manufacturer of the Gh fundraier keycap was imsto's china source.

Also, keypop does not make keycaps, I believe that one was manuf. by SP.

There's also a recent blue/clear ABS/PC one that techkeys just released (GH january pack). I received mine today. It includes a GEEK HACK esc key and geekhack 1.25 mods.

Good to know and I've created a new section for Pad Printed keys.

I updated #39, which is the key I think you were referring to. If I'm mistaken, or if it's all the keys in that set, please let me know.

Also, keypop does not make keycaps, I believe that one was manuf. by SP.

*Updated* Yep and KeyPop just informed me that they were all part of the Demik's GB.

My pleasure and thank you for moving the thread!

You have basically 2 choices.  One is to wait for someone to start a group buy or look for some in Classifieds since you can't start your own thread there yet (need to have 60 posts or more before you can start a thread in Classifieds).

Good luck.

Do you guys really want to Re-Issue old keys? I think it would be cooler to do new ones monthly.

I like the idea of a GB but then it takes the fun away from building a collection!

Let's just get a new monthly cap GB going in aid of GH!

Just make a new GB with all the ones that are already made, so everyone has the oppertunity to own them if they want to.

Was just on the R4 wiki, and noticed something interesting that I think was part of the R3 GB.

"key with GEEK HACK or Geek Hack on it (depending on style).
GEEKHACK 1 unit function row

Colors per style:
ROUND3/* white on very dark gray
RETRO/* lightblue on dark gray
NOIR/* white on black
DARK/* black on very dark gray
DARK/*/ORANGE orange on very dark gray"

If those were all made, I have not seen a white on black or black on very dark gray. Anyone have any pics, or know if they were even made?

I have a white on very dark grey which came from a crap bag.

Hey y'all, I have added the table from OP to the wiki: http://wiki.geekhack.org/index.php?title=GeekHack_Keys

Yes, it needs some cleanup work :) That's the next step.

Hopefully Mashby can get a wiki account soon; otherwise I am more than happy to keep adding info to the wiki page. Just PM me if you see any problems or have any additions :)

Just a heads up -- I am currently working on the markup for the wikitable (since the converter I used totally parsed it all weird-like) so please refrain from adding anything until I finish that part or the changes might get discarded.

I agree that the next step needs to be taking photos of each key to add to the list so it's easy to discern which key is which. So that we have consistency, I think everyone should just send me their collection so that I can take a proper photo with my instamatic camera:))

Seriously though, if there was one collector who wouldn't mind take individual photos of his collection, that would be a great way to start.

I'm new to the Wiki, so I'm not exactly sure. I would imagine the Wiki can host the images, otherwise, I'd have to post them on Flickr, or my own server.

Updates

Looking For Sources
If you can find links to any of the earlier Group Buys, we still have a few slots we're missing. For example, if you know where the Black on Red "GEEK HACK" key came from, please post a reply. Even if you don't have the link, knowing what to look for would be a big help.

The biggest gap we have is on the "geek hack" style keys.

OK, well, maybe I'm confused.  :-[ I just got a black on red, but it's the lower case "geek hack" not the upper case, so maybe that's where I got it from?

Edit: OK, I reviewed your photos and Glissant's and I don't see any Black on Red, so I've removed it from the wiki.

Also, under alps, I don't think you have the white on red GEEK HACK one.

Yep! It's at the bottom of the page and links to webwit's giveaway post.

Also, do you know where the lower case "geek hack" keys came from? I have no info on that.
