I've been quietly following this for a while, but now I'm left wondering... what's the status on this? Are we just compiling decent photos?

original project been dead for a while it just gets necro'd every few months lol

I mean all in all, it can't be that hard to follow up. Aside from sourcing nice photos, it's just a matter of formatting pages, getting it printing, distrobu........ yeah I can see why this hasn't been followed up on.

Is someone spearheading this at the moment?

Here's a teaser of some (really) early designs. Full IC post sometime next month (we're getting rekt by convention season).

Cool to see this back from the dead!

Are there community pics of boards being sourced from somewhere? There were the handful in the OP but I'm wondering where the rest came from.

The Dark covers would also better hide coffee stains that will inevitably occur haha.

This looks so awesome, if you guys ever decide to make a magazine about it, you should call it PlayBoard Magazine =)

I think the key now is not to give it the thumbs up, but to see how we can help make this a production reality.

So doooostin, what works needs to be done / is there anything we can do?

Oh wow, the response is very encouraging! :D.

Our first step is developing a full 10 page spread, and finalizing the cover. We'll be posting on deskauthority, reddit, and here, along with details regarding how to submit photos, etc.

We're figuring out what's the best way collect community photos, i.e which platform since hq photos are hard to xfer. We're also  thinking of offering a keyboard to anyone who submits. Probably a hhkb or a kustom.

Our goal is at least 50 pages :). We're also considering ad buy ins to help reduce costs. We have ties with major keyboard companies that would probably be interested. Could also throw in goodies each order....being part of the only mechanical keyboard book in the world is a nice pr draw.

I do have a question, would people prefer a super high quality book, with a sleeve cover, embossing, hard cover 13x9, all the bells and whistles? Or something slimmer, such as paperback, smaller, less pages? We're not sure what this community would be willing to shell out.... This project could cost as much as $110 per book. It could cost $30 each but would be a lot smaller and lower quality.

We're currently tackling it as luxury photobook. If we get enough interest and support, I'll also be looking into embedding an actual switch into the book (yes it's possible, but will add a ton of cost). But if no one wants to pay that much for a bigger book, we could have the book be smaller, allowing us to use more pictures of lower quality. There's a lot of options. (I personally want the more expensive one)

Stay tuned guys! This project is definitely happening :).

I'd pay ~$80-100 for a premium book. A few art books and Collector's Edition art books for games that I have were in that range.

I would prefer both a paperback and a hardcover. That way I can leave the paperback out on an actual coffee table or at work and not fear about people spilling actual coffee on it.

Psh who uses their coffee table for coffee? It's for remote controls and feet. ;P

But yeah having the option would be nice

From a cost perspective I'd be happy with a paperback - but I'm easy either way.

It may be worth putting a survey together with a few options like preferred cover, size, price willing to pay etc, just to gauge the market and interest levels?

I'd pay about the same price range for a hardcover premium book. I don't think I could make myself pay more than $100.

I'm personally more interested in a more expensive hardcover than a cheaper softcover. Softcover books don't look as nice out on coffee tables.

I want to sincerely apologize for not being able to follow through on this project and make it happen.  Since this was originally posted, work went from busy to insane and hasn't let up, my family has had considerable health issues including a death, and we've had to move twice.

What is really great is that even after more than a year, the idea is still solid and the demand is there.  We all want it to happen--so it's not a matter of if, but just when everything will pan out to make it happen.

My own personal schedule will not allow me to commit any time to this at the moment, while my heart yearns to devote a serious month or two to make it reality.  We'll see what happens.  I'm very happy to see others that are willing to take the reigns as well--combining these efforts is how I see this project eventually bearing fruit.

Oh wow, the response is very encouraging! :D.

I'm so glad you were able to make more progress on this than I did.  The same method I was using to gather the originals still works and we could use that as the gathering platform.  Let me know.  Progress, even if slow, is still progress.  :thumb:

I just went through the gallery of submissions and OMG I loved what I saw!  :thumb: :p  Please encourage more submissions as without the submissions, there can't be a book.  (I also changed the way the gallery displays the thumbnails so it stopped cutting off the pictures.)

The next step for me will be to start working on the license agreement for publishing.  That's kind of where I left off before.  No real timeframe other than by the end of 2017 as to when I might complete this, but please bump the thread and ask and I'll at least try to give updates.  :thumb:

It feels good to still be here. :D  It's not been easy, but you know what they say about that which doesn't kill you...it didn't kill you.  :))

I can't wait to be able to really hit this hard.  I know it can be done, the demand is there, and I have a funny feeling there will be more than one edition over the years.  :thumb:

In the meantime, look at all the great images uploaded so far!  That's what inspires me.

I just stopped in the thread myself hoping to see something like this.  I haven't even had a chance to think about the license agreement, so if you want to draft something and then PM it to me (just in the body is fine), that will be a start.  I also have a license agreement I was going to use as a start so I can send that to you first if you want.  Just let me know!

The next step for me will be to start working on the license agreement for publishing.  That's kind of where I left off before.

I always come back to this thread hoping for updates. Slow and steady wins the race I guess  :p. If you want any help with the license agreement etc, I'd be happy to pitch in.

Now is a very busy time for me, but I would totally take a stab at this. Send over what you have, and I'll see what I can add (albeit I'm no lawyer...)
Sounds good!  Although it's going to end up being after Dec 5th as the system I have it on isn't allowing me to remote access it. :(

If there isn't a post on this thread that I sent the document by the 6th, someone bump this thread to get me back on it!  :thumb:

Every few months someone bumps the thread and a few new people get excited. It's slow moving at the moment, but tons of people are interested.

And that's why it lives on and is not a matter of if it will happen, but when:thumb:

I just spent some time checking out the current submissions and OMG there are some seriously ridiculously GORGEOUS images in there!!  :thumb:  Definitely have a look see just to drool at what can end up in the final product, and continue to encourage everyone to submit images.  :thumb:

Hopefully by Christmas we'll be knee deep in getting the photography release prepared, so we'll be moving along...turtle's pace, but moving along.

I'm glad you posted!  I didn't send the document I had for the photo release to rubik...and now it's sent.  :thumb:

Once he and I have reviewed it, do we have any attorneys specializing in intellectual property rights that can review the final before it's posted for execution by the image owners?

The ball is rolling... :thumb:

Received. I'll look it over tonight and see what I can add. I'll do some looking around on the GH irc channel for anyone with legal chops.

Anyone want to regularly encourage great photos in the Keycap and Keyboard Photography thread to submit for the book?  There's always some really awesome stuff in there:

As this gets back up and rolling, would you mind reviewing the original post of this thread for accuracy?  Is the link in the OP still where we should be posting photos for the project, or will that be reworked at any point?

Agh!!  I don't know why I didn't see this post.  :'(

Yes, the links are all still correct.  If anyone has problems with them, please let me know.

A few years later and here will still are.  :-[ Keyboards are still awesome and I hope everyone still thinks this idea is too.  :thumb:

My schedule for working on this in a major way may materialize early 2019 or hopefully at least by the end of 2019/early 2020 (when I finally get my own life back).

I know, I know--those dates sound crazy!!  But right after I posted this idea (with the intention of being able to spend time on it), things went south in a big way for my family and I've been busy helping them for the last few years.  (Even my own site and photography has fallen by the wayside.  Actually, everything in my own life has fallen by the wayside.  :'()

Last thing we were working on was the release which Rubik reviewed and didn't have anything really to add, and I want to make sure it's sound so everyone is solid before we move forward (both the publisher and the artists with the products and photographers).  What would be ideal is a sample publishing contract if anyone has their hands on one.  That would really help shed the light on what's missing and what we already have covered.  :thumb:

And as always, excitement, encouragement, ideas, and resources welcome!  :thumb:
