[IC] DCS Alps Pingmaster - GB Thread Live
« on: Sun, 04 April 2021, 20:32:10 »

Hi all,

Welcome to the new IC for the 2nd set I designed with Franco, DCS Alps Pingmaster, this time with renders!

**Please note that the renders are done in Cherry profile, which is quite similar to but not exactly the same as DCS. Nevertheless, they should give you a good idea of how the final set will look like.

If you can't already tell, this set was inspired by the legendary IBM Pingmaster, an Alps keyboard manufactured for the Asian market around 1983 and known for the pinging noise that their Alps SKCC Green switches made while typing. For this set, we referenced the Japanese version of the board, as well as an IBM 5556 Multistation from the same era in order to help fill in the missing legends.

IC Form

Please do me a favor and fill out the new form, even if you already filled out the old one.

Specifications

Manufacturer: Signature Plastics
Profile: DCS 1-1-2-3-4-4
Material: PBT
Legends: Dye-sublimated
Colors: SP stock colors
Mount: Alps

**Please note that these caps are for Alps/Matias switches only and are not compatible with MX-style switches.

GB Details

The GB will run from August 16 to September 13 and is estimated to ship in Q1 2022.

Kits

Base

Please note that the longer spacebars will be made in ABS due to warping. Front legends will be pad printed.

JIS & macOS

I know this doesn't cover true JIS layouts, but we wanted to focus compatibility on common Alps layouts while also being constrained by the key sizes that SP currently has due to costing. Also includes macOS bottom row swaps.

Spacebars & 40s

Again, the longer bars will be ABS. Includes complete support for hiney's H60 PCB, as well as 3-key 40s support.

Relegendables & Ortho

For those who want that authentic Pingmaster look. This kit is also designed to be able to cover an ortho board. Due to shrinkage, all relegendable keys will be ABS.

Changelog:

7/23/21
- Added GB details, including dates, US pricing, and shipping ETA

6/23/21
- Added 2nd 2u spacebar to Relegendables/Ortho kit

6/18/21
- Added a 1.50u key and additional 2.75u key in the Spacebars kit to suppport hiney's H60 PCB
- Added a R3 and two R4 keys to the Relegendables kit for more uniform ortho coverage

6/16/21
- Added updated renders (less green, new legends)

6/1/21
- Replaced Shift icons with Japanese text legends and shifted other legends around to accommodate
- Added 3-key 40s support to Spacebars kit

4/20/21
- Merged Numpad and Extension into Base kit
- Removed Numpad accents and moved all remaining accents into a separate kit. This should help with both Base kit and JIS pricing.
- Moved macOS support into JIS kit. Again, this was done to help Base kit pricing (apologies to the Mac users out there).
- Spacebar kit pricing was actually pretty reasonable, so I added very basic 40s support
- No changes to Relegendables kit
- OS icon has been made less wide, in line with the change to the Shift icon

4/5/21:
-Fixed some inconsistencies in the Numpad kit
-Added 2nd B and 2.00u spacebar in Spacebar kit

Once again I’m in!

One question though, are the stabilizer inserts going to be Alps or MX? I can’t quite recall how SPs Alps molds work.

To anyone planning to build Alps in the future, this is a must-buy. Even if you don't end up building, you will have desperate people like me wanting your set.

They were present on the Chinese Pingmaster:

The Japanese Pingmaster had no legended shift keys, with L. Shift reading "Alphanumeric" and R. Shift reading "Kana"

We decided to go with the icon on the Chinese Pingmaster because that style (text mods w/ icon shift) is consistent with other keyboards of the era, including the IBM 5556 Multistation that we referenced for many of the missing legends:

So glad to see some Alps love! I am going to grab 2-3 kits for sure. The list for custom Alps keycaps is way to small - this will be a welcome addition to that list. Love the theme for this set as well. Great work!

Edit: I just realized this is PBT as well?!?! This set just jumped up to the No. 1 spot on my "most excited to buy" list!!! Please make this a reality!

I actually prefer the icons to the Japanese text. Moreover, I prefer the wider legends, too. Seems most people don't feel that way, though. But we do exist!

Hi all,

First round pricing came back and it was a bit...shocking. The vendors and I have decided to target a higher MOQ with a larger base kit (FAIR WARNING: it will still be expensive but hopefully better value). Please see below for kit updates:

1. Merged Numpad and Extension into Base kit
2. Removed Numpad accents and moved all remaining accents into a separate kit. This should help with both Base kit and JIS pricing.
3. Moved macOS support into JIS kit. Again, this was done to help Base kit pricing (apologies to the Mac users out there).
4. Spacebar kit pricing was actually pretty reasonable, so I added very basic 40s support
5. No changes to Relegendables kit
6. OS icon has been made less wide, in line with the change to the Shift icon

Also, I've relooked at the colors and picked some new standards. Part of the reason for this is that the blue that was originally used is no longer available. Fortunately, the new standard is very close. The alpha and modifier colors should also be less green now. All colors are still stock SP PBT standards. Updated renders are being worked on and will be posted later, but the new colors are reflected in the updated kit images.

Looking forward to this getting to GB.

My one concern is the Shift key. The centred fat shift symbol just looks strange to my eyes - although I appreciate the design challenge to keep the caps roughly in line with the Pingmaster.

Would it be more consistent with the Enter key to have the shift mod with the text 'Shift'? I would even be happy to pay for alternative Shift keys if you added them as an option in the kitting.

RIP. I was looking at these caps to replace the pad printed abs ones on my at101w but these don't have support for costar/alps style stabs.

Hey dude, these are 3D printable and convert the MX-style stabilizer hole on the bottom of the newer keycaps so they can accept alps and costar stabs. Hope this helps, and you'll support the GB!

After talking with FRANCO, we've decided to abandon all influence from the Chinese Pingmaster and change the Shift icons to Katakana text as per the Japanese Pingmaster. This necessitated a change to the Caps Lock legend, as well as the removal of the optional bottom row カナ keys, as this legend is now on R. Shift. The 1.25u カナ key is now 拡張機能 (Function). This should help the price of the Base kit.

I've also decided to 1) change SCR LOCK to SCROLL LOCK as per the IBM 5556 Multistation that we were taking inspiration from and to 2) add 3-key 40s support to the Spacebars kit.

Below are the update images for the kits affected by these changes. Updated renders are pending.

Is the h60 a popular alps compatible PCB? It would be nice if the Spacebars kit supported that split layout (2.75 - 1.5 - 2.75). This is all very niche, though, so understood if that isn't feasible.

I can add a 1.5u key for sure. As for the additional 2.75u...I do like the symmetry, and that PCB will probably be a popular one in the future. I'll think about it.

I've decided to add complete support for hiney's H60 PCB to the Spacebar kit by adding a 1.50u key and an additional 2.75u key. I've also added a R3 key and two R4 keys to the Relegendables kit to help cover ortho boards more uniformly.

At this point, I think the kits are pretty much final. I'll be submitting for updated pricing today and hopefully we can get the GB up and running in July.

Alps needs major revival. A set like this paves the way for layouts that we love. Hiney has pcbs and plates supporting alps. All that's really needed is for some manu to spend their time on recreating alps rather than another damn linear that is indistinguishable from all the rest.

be aware that DCS and AEK caps don't have the same slope so this set will not "fit" well on the lunar. I wish it did because id be down for the same combo but AI03 confirmed it in the lunar 2 discord that they wouldn't work. :(

Oh, you mean, the profile of the keycaps from the first row to the fourth row (R1-R4)?
Totally fine! I'd be satisfied with just covering the AEK Lunar Ⅰ with this keycaps!

So, the ortho kit is ONLY re-legendable ABS? No PBT blanks?

One question though, are the stabilizer inserts going to be Alps or MX? I can’t quite recall how SPs Alps molds work.

SP only have MX stab mounts.

hi im pretty unfamiliar with how alps and mx stab mounts work together but hypothetically could i use durock v2 stabilizers on a h87a board and still be all good? if not the case what would type of stabilizers would i need?

It baffles me that only 2x R3 relegendables are in that kit, so I'd need two of them for a 4x6 macropad.

Unfortunately, this comes with the territory. It's either fragile stems or spacebars that don't fit. I highly recommend being extra cautious when removing the ABS keys. Particularly with the spacebars, I suggest removing the Alt keys on either side of them first, then pulling up on each end evenly and simultaneously. In general however, it's good to be more cautious when removing Alps keycaps, as the stems are inherently less durable than the MX design.

All vendors are now live. GB thread will be up shortly, after which I'll be locking this thread. Please continue any further discussion there.

ABS fragility comes from doubleshotting, the spacebars are single shot as they're one colour. I wouldnt worry about it.

FWIW, I've mounted an unmounted yuri several times without damaging a keycap, i think this fragility is overblown if you're using them with SKCM switches, I believe matias stems are much tighter so I could well believe they'll break when pulling from matias.

It's great to see the GB live...congrats!

I'm also happy to see the changes you made to the legends on the shift keys - it looks so much better without the arrow icon.

Time to start buying...
