Title: PAY IT FORWARD
Post by: BunnyLake on Wed, 09 September 2015, 09:29:06
hey guys

tomorrow i am sending 10 packages out to 10 random users (well kinda random, people i have addresses for, which is a pretty huge amount with ctrl alt)

each package contains a little something, ranging from a bro cap to a keyboard to keychains, all kindsa bits really

inside each package will be a little note from me, saying pay it forward

these packages are totally unsolicited, so nobody is under any obligation to play along, so if you choose not to continue the chain, please enjoy your gift

if however you would like to play along, please send a little something to one to three more users, with a little note saying pay it forward within the package

i am starting by sending 10 out in the hopes its enough to get this going

please feel free to use this thread as a hub, to post pics etc, and if anyone would like to send packages anonymously, and dont have addresses for certain users, please contact me and ill see what i can do

thanks

Once again Bunny showing why your a legend, we still have to sort out that pint!

But, could I abstain from this please? I know it's random but you have my details (( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)) and I can't afford to do much of anything right now and would feel super guilty if anything arrived!

Soooooo MUCH YESSSSSSSSSSSS love it bunny. Seriously this could save someone's life !!! Imagine some keyboard fanatic so depressed and down decides this is the day I'm gong to kill myself. Poor bastard thinks huh nobody sends me anything but bills so for that extra little bit of depression why don't I go check the mail before I hang myself. Finds package from bunny in the mail with brocap and ctrl alt swag with a note saying PAY IT FORWARD and realizes that life is worth living  :)) it could happen

On a serious note love the idea and very down to participate  :p

I mean beyond this. You know? Like in the more ethereal sense...kind of like we should all try to be less salty and more community minded as a way of "giving back". Beyond the actual paying it forward.

I agree.  I for one really hope this works well and people don't just stop the chain.  A huge part of this hobby is the sharing of the things that you enjoy.

On a side note, what ever happened to the crowdsource keyset from a couple years back?

Post by: Sed8op8 on Wed, 09 September 2015, 21:15:17
Well I for one am really feeling the spirit here and think this is a great idea\platform we could use for some cool projects. I have some ideas of some things I'd like to do for members of this site. I feel like maybe we could award members for different stuff maybe (saying it out loud it sounds cheese but in my head it sounded cool haha) like most dedicated new member, biggest fan, community mvp, best group buy organizer etc etc we could put together awards or prizes for people (sed8 shrugs her shoulders) it wouldn't just be about giving people caps or swag but community recognition. Its a little different I guess then paying it forward but pm me if anyone would like to talk about this or discuss Further as I don't want to derail.... You got me caught uup in the spirit bunny 8)

Edit: I know I have been shown and seen ALOT of kindness and acceptance here and I just want to give back. In not particularly wealthy or amazingly talented like so many of our great members but I can give my time and effort. I have been really trying to think of different ways I can give back/be more active. .  I have a couple of GB INTEREST checks in mind etc something besides the occasional cap giveaway or donation to pay it forward to a hobby and forum/community that has given me so much joy :thumb:

18 international packages sent today for this

and i sent 3 to the uk which are on a separate receipt

so 21 total pay it forwards went out today

uk people should get theirs tomorrow but latest saturday

as a side note, about 10 of these packages i did a little research on, making sure they had the right boards etc, the other 11 are totally random, the contents of the packages vary in value, so please dont think its favouritism if you get something of a different value to someone else

Bam bunny is the man, also I find this highly amusing that's he's saying no and your still giving him things reminds me of my grandma asking me if I want sweets even if I have had something to eat xD

THIS IS AWESOME  Thank you so much for doing this Bunny! The S&H receipt made me cringe a bit at the total but you can't put a price on something like this 8).... Please post pics people    such a great idea I hope people pick this up and run with it   :thumb:

I didn't notice any bitterness to be honest, just answers to personal attacks. This was not really on yourself but rather caused by external causes.

So the [CTRL]ALT network is using data to build profiles of Geekhackers? They have our addresses, switch preferences and t-shirt sizes.... Now they send out their 'care packages' to 'keep us happy'?

WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

They are clearly trying to alter our behavioral habbits! Making a domino effect of more 'care packages' What's next? Artisans in the water supply?!!

Yes. It is Punks.

And I love all the little details and nods towards past, current, and future projects... shotgun shells, miami sunglasses, etc.

Just thought I'd drop in and say thank you Bunny, for the inspiration to include some *extra goodies in some of my packages and to sketch up some artwork for stuff that I'm sending out tomorrow to fellow GH'ers. Saying "pay it forward" in most of these packages might be a bit odd, I could squeeze one or two in (it's extras on top of stuff people bought  - but I meant it in spirit! :/ ), at least now I have enough addresses I can really start playing along. So thanks Bunny, and thank you geekhack!

I got PIF'd at McDonald's once. A lady accidentally cut me off while pulling in. I restrained myself from getting angry and just got in the drive-thru line behind her. When I pulled up to pay for my breakfast, the cashier told me, "the woman in front of you paid for your order and asked me to tell you she was sorry for cutting you off." It was a pretty cool feeling.

So, just putting it out there that I like sausage McGriddles.

Seriously. For me, if my keyboard addiction is over that means I'm dead, and at that point my children, as executors of my estate, will discover the immense value of my collection and I imagine at least one of them will take up my mantle and begin down the path of the wallet hack.

hey guys

tomorrow i am sending 10 packages out to 10 random users (well kinda random, people i have addresses for, which is a pretty huge amount with ctrl alt)

Show Image
(http://i.imgur.com/K8AoFjD.jpg)

each package contains a little something, ranging from a bro cap to a keyboard to keychains, all kindsa bits really

inside each package will be a little note from me, saying pay it forward

these packages are totally unsolicited, so nobody is under any obligation to play along, so if you choose not to continue the chain, please enjoy your gift

if however you would like to play along, please send a little something to one to three more users, with a little note saying pay it forward within the package

i am starting by sending 10 out in the hopes its enough to get this going

please feel free to use this thread as a hub, to post pics etc, and if anyone would like to send packages anonymously, and dont have addresses for certain users, please contact me and ill see what i can do

thanks

Cant wait to see what everyone gets!

I was having a bad day because of my recent car troubles, but i received a package yesterday with a familiar sticker.

I was in a rush to school so, and felt like it would cheer me up to open it when i got home. And so the wait began.

Opened it up and it was an awesome shirt!

I thought to myself, "Well I do love California." and then it hit me, it's for [CTRL]Alt  :p

Also came with a cool little card with the art previously posted (http://i.imgur.com/3CZIv0r.jpg)

This is the back of the shirt and the back of the card

Thought i'd post a photo of me actually wearing the shirt since i never post any pictures.

And then my girlfriend Sarah though I should take "better" photos and made me "model".
I now can see that I really need a hair cut  :-X

Anyway. I really appreciate it Bunny, but I think you may have given me a death sentence because Sarah is going to kill me for this shirt.

I've been having plans on sending some stuff out to people, but school and all. So hopefully I can get some stuff out to people  :D

I've been having plans on sending some stuff out to people, but school and all. So hopefully I can get some stuff out to people  :D

I was having a bad day because of my recent car troubles, but i received a package yesterday with a familiar sticker.

I was in a rush to school so, and felt like it would cheer me up to open it when i got home. And so the wait began.

Opened it up and it was an awesome shirt!

Also came with a cool little card with the art previously posted (http://i.imgur.com/3CZIv0r.jpg)

I came home today to find the most beautiful of surprises waiting for me.

[attachimg=1]

I will admit, I don't really know how this ticket works, but I am pretty sure I get first crack at buying the Bros I want in the next sale.  :)  With all the cool new stuff Bro has been working on, that is pretty exciting.

I have ideas for a couple packages to send on to others.  I need to do a bit of research to see who exactly I am going to send them to.  Bunny, I will probably bug you to see if you have addresses for them once I figure it out because the surprise aspect of this is awesome.  :P

I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but I am blown away by your generosity Bunny.  Pretty soon we are going to have to petition Webster's to have BunnyLake added as a footnote to the definition of philanthropists.  :)

Edit: BTW, the artwork on that card looks so cool in person.  There is something about that candle that is so bloody cool.  I can't even put my finger on it, but damn...

Wow! So cool!

I'm wanting a dibs ticket just for the ticket and not the dibs. Those these are sweet :D

But those packages are sweet as well. I still have my silver one from a while back.

CtrlAlt keychain

And the ctrl alt business card that hipster drew up(by the way I want no NEED a blown up version of this I can frame on my wall it is AMAZING  :))....

Also I am just waiting on the address for one of my pay it forwards and I am seriously excited to get the package out. Seriously sending stuff to people and surprising/hooking people up is just as much if not more exciting and fulfilling for me then getting stuff myself  :thumb:

Is there a way to get a list of people as they post so that those of us that want to jump in without receiving can do so and not just start a round robin thing, but get more people involved?

I was thinking about how to handle this as well.  I know some people will be interested in participating, while others would rather not participate because they don't feel like they have anything they can give.  I was finding this a big hard to navigate when I was figuring out who to send stuff to.  I ended up just PMing the people and saying "if you are interested in participating in PayItForward (http://ctrlalt.io/payitforward), send me your address".  That worked, but now the people know they have something coming.  Half of the fun of this is getting mystery packages though, so this approach takes some of the fun out of it.

I was thinking about doing something similar to what I did with, http://gh60-market.swillkb.com/, where people could opt-in to PayItForward.  Obviously we would not want everyone's address published, but I think it would be cool if they could add their address and then if someone wants to send them a gift they could PM me and get the address.  I don't know if you all trust me with your addresses, but at least we would not be showing the whole internetz...

I would expect the public to be able see something like:

Willing to participate in PayItForward

The classified link would be optional, but would help people give stuff to people that they are interested in.  Submitting an address would also be optional.  If they submitted an address then anyone could PM me to get their address so they could be surprised by the gift.  If they don't enter an address then the giver would have to PM them directly to get the address, but they would at least know that the person is interested in doing it.

Would something like this be interesting?  I could build this tonight and have it up and running tomorrow morning if this is of interest...

======================================

---------------------------------------------------------------------
| username  | country | classified | gave address | contact         |
---------------------------------------------------------------------

This would work for those that are willing to participate for future, but it would need a way to include those that already recieved so that we don't just keep piling on stuff to one or two people.

If you put that together, you can add me.

Also, not sure if people putting their name on a list takes away from the spirit of this.  Looking back now, I think it would be better to just have a list of those that received something.

Haha. Because I had my username in there and didn't want to confuse things with the 'pm swill' function, so I made up a dummy name. So that dummy is just an alias for me.

Ya, its not an easy thing to figure out a nice way to handle this.  If people have to pm me to get the address, I can try to keep track of whose addresses get requested and notify the people that someone has sent something to that person. Starting to add a bunch of manual process in this, but that is just an opportunity to get creative with software. :)

Not that I am expecting a package, but I recently moved and I would feel bad if someone sent something to my old address.. So swill's idea would definitely help with that!

Before people start spamming me with their addresses, I just want to clear something up.  I would not be collecting this information from everyone.  Each person would be able to fill out a google form with the details and I would only expose the fields I mentioned previously via a website.  Similar to how the http://gh60-market.swillkb.com/ website works.  You would click a link on the website I create.  You would then enter the details you would like to share and then you would show up in the list of people who are willing to participate.

I could have another form that would be a list of people who got stuff and they could enter that so people know that they have already participated.  As Badwrench points out, this information is also useful.

From a sender's perspective it would have been good to have a list of all those who've already been sent something, but then potential recipients could look at the list and ruin the surprise.  Though they wouldn't know what was incoming or from who, so maybe that just adds to the excitement?

personally, whilst i appreciate the work, something feels slightly off about having people sign up for this as it were

whilst i understand the point of it, i feel there is some more middle ground between it being blind and whats proposed

that being said, this isnt my thing, it is everyones, and its great to see people getting in to the spirit of it, i want it to grow organically, and if that is the way its gonna grow, more power to it

Ya, I hear ya.  I kind of feel the same way to be honest.  Something does not feel right about signing up for this.  I will hold off on publishing anything unless there is overwhelming interest in it.  It is literally an hour of work for me to have something ready, so it is something we can decide to do later if it is wanted.

On the same page I was thinking of doing a form to allow people to post that they got something.  Maybe this is more inline with the spirit of what we are doing here.  The fields I was considering adding where Receiver, Sender and Pictures (a link to where they posted pictures of the gift).  I would suggest people post pictures in the PayItForward thread and then just post the link to the post they posted the pictures in.  This might keep some excitement around it and let people quickly click through and see a bunch of pictures of stuff people have been getting.  Not sure if that is interesting...

Sorry I am a software developer, so when I have my hammer out, everything looks like a nail.  :P

Wouldn't it possible to have a system behind the page that raffle people together. I mean you fill a database with the info people put in, then the system raffle people together and send them an email with the info regarding the person they need to PIF to. That way the system could keep track of those who already received something so they would be drawn out of the raffle until everyone has something and then it could just start over. ^^

Truth be told, it wasn't 100% a surprise since massdrop had to step in and ruin it by posting the sanctuary buy so suicidal had to pm me and tell me not to buy in.  It was still a huge surprise to even be told and then to open it up and see it for the first time, so awesome!
Thank you again suicidal_orange, I am super stoked.

hey guys

tomorrow i am sending 10 packages out to 10 random users (well kinda random, people i have addresses for, which is a pretty huge amount with ctrl alt)

Show Image
(http://i.imgur.com/K8AoFjD.jpg)

each package contains a little something, ranging from a bro cap to a keyboard to keychains, all kindsa bits really

inside each package will be a little note from me, saying pay it forward

these packages are totally unsolicited, so nobody is under any obligation to play along, so if you choose not to continue the chain, please enjoy your gift

if however you would like to play along, please send a little something to one to three more users, with a little note saying pay it forward within the package

i am starting by sending 10 out in the hopes its enough to get this going

please feel free to use this thread as a hub, to post pics etc, and if anyone would like to send packages anonymously, and dont have addresses for certain users, please contact me and ill see what i can do

thanks
This inspires me to do great things. I'm glad that you are doing great things for the community  :thumb:

This post is woefully late because well, life . . . BUT!!!! I was the lucky recipient of BadWrench's awesome generosity and love. That week, I was having an especially rough time at work and was pretty much as stressed out as I've ever been at my job. Suddenly I get a random message from BadWrench telling me that I had a package. I raced downstairs to my mailroom and since it was Monday, the weekend mail and not been sorted. So together the mail guy and I unearth this mysterious package and I race back to my desk to open it.

HOLY

FREAKIN

*(&(^%%!!!!!!

BadWrench, through whatever voodoo/psychic power he possesses, knew I had been on the never-ending search for a Binge keythulu. So, he ended my quest by fullfilling one of my dreams at GH. He sent me Keythulu. And it wasn't just any Keythulu, it was one of Binge's firsts.

Not only that, he also sent me a plethora of other awesome goodies such as a HKP warmaster and a GH pack from Techkeys. OH, and also this super awesome TRON Christmas ornament. Because he's an awesome fellow.

Words cannot describe the feeling of disbelief, amazement, and wonder that such a random act of (personal) kindness was bequeathed upon me. As a female working in STEM, I've had to fight tooth, nail, and claw to get to where I am. I'm not used to simply asking for what I want and getting it, and this really made me stop and contemplate the things going on around me. I was able to realize that whatever work **** I had going on ultimately didn't matter because in the end, all that matters is our relationships with each other. How if we treat each other with kindness, we'd all be in a better place.

So, here are some pics of my Pay It Forward package from Badwrench. Thank you my friend, you really are one of the good guys and you made that week so much better. Truly, I cannot tell you how much it meant to me. <3
