Hello everyone, welcome to the IC for GMK Fuji.

GB March 15th - April 15th

Inspired by the colours and landscape surrounding the legendary mountain, this set brings a stylish look to your keyboard. The set features dark blue Latin and Katakana legends on white alphas, with lighter blue-grey mods. The pink of the accents resemble the iconic sakura. All colours come from the RAL design catalogue.

Special thanks to BK over the past months for helping me develop this idea.

Without further ado, here are the kits - all renders done by the talented pikku-allu.

Katakana Base:

Pretty straightforward. Provides the compatibility you need for most layouts, while keeping it as trimmed down as possible. Katakana sublegends are there as an homage to the inspiration of the set.

Latin Base:

Pretty straightforward. Provides the compatibility you need for most layouts, while keeping it as trimmed down as possible. For those that prefer a cleaner, sublegendless look.

Addition:

To cover TGR Alice-like layouts and some more niche layouts that weren't in the base kit, as well as giving more legend options. Basic 40s compatibility also included.

Novelties:

Made in collaboration with Sour, to add a bit more personality to your board.

International:

Your standard kit for European layouts - support for British, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and German keyboards.

Sakura:

Accent spacebars, for an extra splash of colour.

Collaborations:

RAMA WORKS x GMK Fuji

Anodised aluminium with enamel infill. All colours will be matched to the approved GMK samples. Both icons designed by my talented friend Sour.

Mount:

Pagoda:

With this set I have again collaborated with the talented Sour for deskmats. I hope you like them all as much as I do:

Landscape:

Paper:

Sakura:

Weave:

And last but not least, some board renders:

TGR Jane V2 CE:

Finder Works Hyphen:

Cannon Keys Satisfaction 75:

Colours:

Comparison between similar sets, with BoW and WoB for reference. Exact RAL values for GMK Fuji to be released at a later date.

Pricing:

Much love to Sour and pikku-allu especially for all your hard work - you two have truly gone above and beyond to make this project what it is. Also ilikerustoo for the early support and all the feedback.

Also many thanks to biip for giving permission to use his katakana moulds for this project.

I’m in. Some suggestions:

Move R3 pg up and R4 pg down into base kit.
Coloured arrows may work better in the spacebar kit than the novelties kit.

I think that with icons it's not overly necessary. Should this be text, or text+icon - 100% I'd have it in there.

Excited for this, didn't expect the GB to be so soon after the annoucement.

It looks very pretty but I would have never guessed it's based on Mt.Fuji (or it's surrounding landscape) when I look at this set.
Not really sure where the grey comes from.

Being a Fuji set I would have expected to see Mt.Fuji somewhere on a novelty at the very least (Maybe that's where the Rama will come in).

I really like the set, and the deskmats are especially gorgeous.
But I expect more from the Novelties like: Pink Novelty ESC, Pink Spacebar with Mt.Fuji design for example and maybe some stylized Pink arrows instead of just Pink arrows.

Edit: just saw the accent F5-F8 that is amazing, well done

Awesome set... knocked it out of the park Ttom.  Love the colors.  I do agree w/ the previous poster that having a pink novelty esc would be really nice!  Also having a few extra keys in the addition set would be great to fill out some 40% keyboards (1.75 backspace, 1.50 enter)

Also would love to see some more renders... maybe on an isla?

Love the look and Latin base set. It looks like you've gone for Apple/Mac OS ISO layout in the base? I've never seen this before, I think something less specific would be better.

Got some more renders coming up - will be on a Finder Works Hyphen.

Love the look and Latin base set. It looks like you've gone for Apple/Mac OS ISO layout in the base? I've never seen this before, I think something less specific would be better.

This was something I thought a lot about in the kitting process. It's the most complete ISO layout I can make with 3 keycaps (that extra R1 keycap I'd include in katakana anyway with a different ISO setup, to mitigate duplicate legends). As long as you're not doing full UK ISO in base you're compromising with the support you do, and I prefer this setup much more to something like R4 >< and R3 |\. Besides, the International kit is there for a reason.

Being a Fuji set I would have expected to see Mt.Fuji somewhere on a novelty at the very least (Maybe that's where the Rama will come in).

This is the plan for the RAMA R1 keycap.

That R4 `~ key (in both kits) looks really out of place. It's as if the ghoXTs of the paXT were trying to pull a faXT one on us... but were misled by A Particularly Poor Layout Entrée into doing evil things.

Why katakana??????? Why are you slapping on katakana to something that is a Japanese icon??????? Katakana is meant to be used for objects that are foreign from the country, not to mention that it looks abysmal compared to the curves of Latin letters. Please for the love of god consider hiragana instead of katakana if you really want to pay homage to the country and/or the mountain.

In for the novs and deskmat, but this feels like it needs a pink novelty ESC, and maybe some more variety in the designs for the arrows? Basically what CookieFlow said, and I think it's a bit ridiculous that there's no Fuji novelty in any of these sets. For a set called GMK Fuji, it's not a great look to have to buy a $60 artisan for a design the set was based on. Please reconsider  :)

Re: 40s - got nothing against 40s, but was just a situation where we weren't confident in a kit like that reaching MOQ for this set. I have heard your thoughts about the kitting as it stands and am open to edits - I do urge you to fill out the form as it is there for a reason  :D

Should I include more support in the Addition kit, 1.75u backspace and 1.50u enter are certainly on my mind.

Definitely hearing a lot of the requests for a Mt. Fuji novelty as well as a pink R1 novelty too, so those are under consideration.

Anyway, thanks for the support today too. I'll probably have a couple minor kit changes here and there over the coming days.

It didn't cross my mind when I saw the IC this morning, but I will agree with the people mentioning Hiraganas.
Hiraganas should be the logical choice considering it is based on a Japanese area and not a foreign theme.

And just aesthetically the rounder shape of Hiraganas imo is more suited for the theme and colors.

When I started working on the set it was meant to be how you described, but when I looked at comparisons between the two it was clear that the white worked a whole lot better (also fwiw it's a dark shade of blue). I don't plan to change the colours at all.

Just caught up on the 40s discord about the kitting... not having minivan support is definitely disappointing.  Anyways, gl w/ the GB!

That's great to hear!  I actually just found out like an hr ago that there's all this silly nerd drama over the minivan layout (i'm just a simple consumer here...).  So in hindsight thank you for having a civil discussion in the 40s discord about the kitting!

I also would never guess it's based on Fuji. I think other colors would have been much better for representing Fuji itself. I also agree that with naming the set after an iconic Japanese mountain, hiragana would have been the better choice for sub legends. The only people who would want katakana on this set are those who already have several hiragana sets. Otherwise, there's no justification for it. I was hyped when I saw a kit coming for Fuji, I love the mountain and I thought it would be an absolute must buy for me. However, with this set I just gotta hope another one comes around that will better represent the mountain itself...

A pink R1 novelty esc would be nice

This. There should be at least one R1 pink novelty since most people will probably use the accent color for Esc especially when the only novelty enter keys are in the accent color. Also agree with people on the hiragana sublegends.

Overall love the colors and looks like a promising set. GLWIC

Thanks for all the feedback. We have an R1 sakura novelty which will be in the next kit update, along with a couple other changes.

So, as for sublegends: I started work on this set in September last year at which point the existing hiragana moulds irked me a lot, however these will be improved with Serika 2 (see here for differences: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=109505.msg2978430#msg2978430). I do have some gripes with the public katakana moulds being made for Mecha-01, so changing the sublegends is actually a direction I may be interested in going. I've made a form for you to vote for your favourite, and so changing will be considered depending on results.

Thank you very much for considering the Hiraganas.
I sincerely hope they make it, as I feel it would be really sad if a Mt.Fuji set, one of the most iconic place in Japan (if not the most) uses Katakanas which is only used for foreign names.

I hope people voting can take this into consideration and not make their vote based on if they already own too many sets with Hiraganas.  :thumb:

Ooh the old 20 day IC trick with vendors already in place!  Well, guess I’ll set money aside for March. Not sure why we call these interest checks.  Maybe we need a new “pre release notice” category? Maybe the vendors have to see how many they want to commit to based on feedback to establish pricing?  No complaints from this guy though.  Kits suit me and the colors are an instant classic.

First: I saw your comment on 1.75 control and I get the point with the icon mods.

But I still disagree, there are probably more people out there than just me that prefer to use the right key instead of a wrong one with an icon.
The HHKB layout is very common probably half of all 60% users or so use it and even with other layouts it is pretty common to use R3 control.

To use an HHKB with R3 control you would have to buy 2 Kits here and while prices are not finalized I think it is predictable to pay over 150$ for Base and Addition.
Just to (correctly) cover the 60 keys of HHKB... I dont know, not a fan of that.

I really agree with this idea for a new category. People get absolutely shat on when they propose an early idea here, when really they are staying true to the name of the forum — checking general interest before moving on with development. Perhaps we need two new subforums and to rename this subforum: "interest checks" "design refinement" "pre-release" or something to that effect?

I think the 40s support could still use some help. Notable missing keys include a 1u R2 Esc, a 1u R2 Tab, a 1u R4 Raise and Lower keys, and 1-2 1u R3 Shift keys.

I think you would be okay to remove one or both 3u spacebars. I also think that the 1u R1 Backspace key would fit better in base. Also, does there need to be an alpha-colored 6u spacebar in there, or is the pink 6u bar in the sakura kit good enough?

I would definitely prefer that the addition kit be changed to a 40s kit, and the actual addition keys be moved into base (assuming they don't affect base price all that much). However, I'm definitely biased here as a 40s user, and I would love to hear the opinion of those that are interested in the bob-40s keys in the addition kit.

Maybe I'm looking too much into this, but I assume this means the Katakanas are staying.
If that is the case, would you consider a Hiragana only kit? (similar to what Hanami Dango did for example, so just Hiraganas as the only legend).

Fun idea, and in an ideal world where everything reaches MOQ it would be done. However, new moulds are expensive and with International perhaps requiring vendor buyout splitting those numbers over two kits / making that one kit far more pricey isn't a possibility.

However, the "Pagoda" artisan is very Chinese-looking and it would be great if you could consider revising it.

Agreed.

Hope you’ve all been having a good day. Made some kit changes (and they’ve been updated in the OP).

Katakana base kit:
- sublegends changed slightly - biip has kindly given permission to use his katakana moulds for this project (see: GMK Honor, GMK Bushido, GMK Bentō R2)
- added R3 1.75 Control

Latin base kit:
- added R3 1.75 Control

Addition kit:
- added R2 1.75 Backspace
- added R3 1.50 Enter
- added R3 1.75 stepped Control
- removed R3 1.75 Control

Novelties kit:
- added R1 1.00 sakura novelty

International kit:
- R1 ´` tertiary legend changed from ¦ to |

Sakura kit:
- removed 1.00 spacebars

More announcements to be made soon.

Text mod "Control" doesn't work if the other mods are icons, it just looks out of place. Could you consider to changing it to ^ ? Someone made a visual comparison https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=107383.msg2930291#msg2930291

Text 'Control' is fully intentional design choice and will not be changing, sorry.

text mod control R3 works, imo, as it ties with R4 text (alpha) mods. at some point I’d like to see a set with R3 code or system (instead of control or, rarely, function) to differentiate from R4 and indicate ‘layers’ but i’m not holding my breath.

I somewhat share that sentiment in that as a Mac user I would like to include a kit with R3 Command (full 1.75 + stepped 1.75) in one of my future sets. Function is a nice halfway point between Control and an OS key but I didn't think I could justify adding it here

I don't know how I hadn't found this till now but I'm a fan though I defo have some queries.

1: Any chance of an accent Esc key in the addition kit? As it is there are no R2 Novelties so its kind of disappointing knowing I wouldn't be able to have any variation on the Esc key, this is also something I'd like to see with alot of the other keys in the addition kit but its understandable not wanting to make it too big due to pricing.
2: I agree with some other users that the arrow keys seem a better fit for the Sakura kit moreso than the Novelties kit or even the base kit because especially as a 40's user, its a pain to have to buy an entire kit when all I really want from it is the arrow keys while half the others don't even fit onto boards.
3: I also agree with users pointing out the lack of a Fuji Novelty but equally the other novelties seem kind of lackluster in the amount of designs, with only identical novelties available for R3 and R4 (not including arrow keys) with no change in novelty design or colour, and currently no novelties for R2 other than part of an ISO space, I feel like some extra variety here would make it far more appealing.

Looking forward to seeing this set rip my wallet apart because damn those colours are nice.  ;D

I do agree with you on some of those and have already expressed my opinion previously.
The novelties are pretty lackluster and lack variety, at least we managed to get a Pink Escape novelty.
Maybe they could have been improved if there had been more time between IC and GB.

Don't get me wrong I really like the set and I will go pretty much all in on it.
I will just ignore the fact that it's called Fuji considering some choices like the Katakanas and Mt.Fuji only being present on a Rama and a Mat.

Any way to get Õ and ˇ~ keys into the international kit to support EST language layout as well? I've never seen them in GMK kits, only in KAT so far. Would love to see a GMK set offer full support.

I guess we will never know the polls results.

I saw you deleted your [IC] reddit post, not really sure why.
But seems like half the comments were about asking for Hiraganas instead of Katakanas, and those comments were also heavily upvoted.

But I guess you have your reason.

The reddit post was deleted as I'd rather just make one closer to GB with more information and details on kitting, and didn't feel that one yesterday was as necessary. At this point kits are all locked in and not open to changes, and though I understand your criticisms and have thought about your feedback, katakanas are my personal choice with this set.

Re: your comments about novelties and length of the IC - this set's been in the works for around half a year now, and Sour can attest to the fact that we've spent countless hours going over the novelties and details.

Out of curiosity. Why did you make a form for people to vote on sublegends if you were just gonna go with your personal preference? And you say you deleted the post because you want to have more info on kitting etc, which info has not been released yet?

Hey, sorry about that. We've pushed the GB date back to the 15th as we're still communicating with GMK regarding a couple things, though we do have quotes now.

I think a lot of people do think they are grey and might be surprised when they receive the set.
The renders (at least on my monitor) looks grey and not blue.

I edited it to say 'blue-grey' as opposed to just blue. Rest assured, this has nothing to do with the renders which we've spent some time on making accurate to the colour. The comparison is also included so you'll have the best idea of what the set will turn out as in real life  ;D

if the pics and renders are true to color, i'd say the mods look like a cooler-temperature grey.

Small updates today:

- Keebstuff has made a cable in collaboration with GMK Fuji. For more information see here: https://www.keebstuff.com/en/c/cables/gmk-fuji-presale
- swagkeys.com will be Korean vendor for the set!
- Some edits to some legends in the base and novelties kits. Nothing very noticeable, but felt like saying here just in case.
- Added some renders on the Satisfaction 75! See below for those ;D

This is a very good point.  I hope this can be adjusted to be more "Japanese" looking please

As a Japanese, I do like the overall design of the set.
However, the "Pagoda" artisan is very Chinese-looking and it would be great if you could consider revising it.

That R4 `~ key (in both kits) looks really out of place. It's as if the ghoXTs of the paXT were trying to pull a faXT one on us... but were misled by A Particularly Poor Layout Entrée into doing evil things.

Apple UK ISO is an interesting route to take, I have never seen this before in a custom set.

I enjoy the colorway very much!
