i know there's another thread for this but, for the sake of simplicity, will these be sold in kit form post beta testing?

ok sorry for the bad pic, ive had this about an hour and just wanted to get a snapShow Image(http://i.imgur.com/Jp6DRrp.jpg)
im gonna use it as my primary board for a week or so and give a better review, but as some of you may have seen from my typing style, this board should suit me perfectly, my initial impression however were great, took to it right away and even more happy with it than i thought i would be, sadly i havent had a chance and wont have a chance to have a really good go on it until tonight, but its certainly getting a big thumbs up from me

I have no idea how that's practical - but more power to you! ;D A cute board, for sure.
I also have no idea why smileys aren't appearing
Maybe a silly question..Probably FN+shift+A or something. I might be wrong though, i don't know how to program keyboards or anything
If there's two layers of FN on certain keys, but only one FN button... how do you input the second character?
For example if I hit FN+A it looks like it inputs "1", what do I do to input the exclamation?

You'll have to ask JD! I have no clue how much they cost to make. I bought it along with the PCB, teensy, and some labor from JD (he soldered diodes and teensy for me), so it's hard to tell which portion of the cost was the case.

Checking in to say I will buy one of these whenever a GB starts. Not sure how much more 1337 we can get after eliminating the number row.Make spacebar really small and move all of the shift, enter, etc keys to the bottom row :P
I would really like to see someone here actually use this in real life.
Maybe post a video of using the Fn key while normal typing.

Would anyone mind posting their layouts? I'm curious how different people have configured theirs.
The next step after that: a onehanded keyboard with two keys for your left index and middle finger. The middle finger operates 0, and the index operates 1. You have to type in the the number of the keycode you want to send in binary. Pressing the two buttons together sends the message and resets for the next keycode.

Your layout is definitely a unique, novel approach. I don't know that I could ever get used to using it, but some things about it are very intuitive. I hope I programmed it correctly. I tested it, so it should be. :)It's certainly different and will take a lot of getting used to, but everything is working properly. :thumb:

According to JD (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47133.msg1093046#msg1093046) these are the modifiers:
Row 2: 1u Esc, 1u Del or Backspace
Row 3: 1.25u Tab, 1.75u Return or Enter
Row 4: 1.75u Shift, 1.25u Shift, 1u Fn
Row 4 (SA Row 3): 1.25u Ctrl, 1u Win or Del, 1u Alt; optional layout: 1.25u >., 1.25u ?/

because we arent doing it to make money
so we purchased a ton of boards, and sold everything at cost ( a dollar or 2 is added to a couple bits just to cover ourselves against any issues)

about 15 of them will be shipping in the morning, so lots will start showing up soon

Such a neat project. Has anyone spent enough time on the 40% to know whether they can use it as a comfortable daily tool?I used it as my daily driver for two or so months. It is not that hard to use as a main board, you just need to make a good FN layer.

Where you been buddy? Welcome back!!
Glad you like it. :D
I actually designed it with gamers in mind, more than for typing. You can map your commonly used keys to any key you like, and even program macros, etc. Keyboard for one hand, and plenty of desk space for your mouse.

This might sound odd but is there a reason that this "minimal" board has two ctrl and two alt buttons? I just figured that's more room for extra function/etc.
If you take switches and keycaps out of the equation what does it cost to build a 40%?https://ctrlalt.io/store/items/jd40

The standoffs seem a little tall - can they be replaced with shorter ones for lower profile? (maybe a 50% reduction in height?)

ISO Enter? No, it's too small to support such a large key. The layout is fixed. What you see in everyone's photos is what you get. :)

I moved the arrows from WASD to FCVB because otherwise the W key would have way too many modes.

Thank you, I just really like making/working on things with my hands.
Does someone have an idea what happened to GB thread of JD40? I can't find it on search and even in google search. I would really love to complete my JD40 but can't due to a defective plate.

Thank you! I made that wrist rest, and I am quite proud of it. I found that with a 40% board, it is most comfortable to use a rest that is just about sized for a 60%, which this one is.

i guess it depends alot on what one would use it for, but in my opinion the only thing i would "really" want to change is the left shift to a 1.25+1u setup instead :)
but then i mostly just use the mobik for irc or messaging.

I just need the 10u for dvorak and split space because a full size cap wastes so much space on a 40% imo. Also just realized that the Mobik has a different layout than the JD40.

ah, yeah, as Gon told me the mobik was designed to use pretty much all standard caps, making it a bit nisched to people like me who only uses it for simpler tasks :)

These are all so beautiful. What's the best way to get a 40% keyboard without paying 250 dollars these days?Buy a used JD40, wait for the JD45, buy a Planck, or build your own. The cheapest way would probably be to get a case cut and hand wire it.

Ohhh, milled aluminum. In a tray-type casing? The common JD40 cases are the plate style cases that are either laser or waterjet cut, and are not terribly expensive (~$100 or less).

Another logical Unifying 40% keyboard.
It is totally hand wired. I use a usb to usb keyboard converter for TMK firmware support.
This one is just a experimental try. Later I will build a new wireless one with improved layout for myself and a smaller converter.
It works perfect and the keyboard itself only weights 270g with keycaps.

My new YD40_Wireless. The PCB and case are designed by myself.
Maybe it's the miniest 40% mech keyboard. The top layer and bottom layer are 2.4mm, middle layer 7mm.
It uses logitek unifying microcontroller of k230 with two 2032 batteries and can last for more than half a year use.
I use USB to USB keyboard converter for TMK firmware support.
Here are some pics. Later I will write a build log. It is not completed yet. I am still waiting for some screws.

Oh, can't wait the build log! Really interested about the Logitech Unifying microcontroller. You really can get 6 month usage out of it? Man, that's awesome! Off topic - the two "spacebars" are a space & enter or space & backspace? And which one is which? Just thinking about switching my "space" thumb. Now I hit it with my left but I see a lot of 40% defaults to right.
So i got a new camera, and i really wanted to test it out, so i took pictures of my Atreus
I didn't get much reception when i originally shared it but maybe it will get some attention with keyboad pr0n shots (these are really high res shots, click on them)

I need one of these 40%s - looks like the website is down - did I miss the train?
is possible still can take a order for those?
Just built it. Everything works as expected. I went with the in-switch leds (couldn't get underside LEDs to light up when I added them, too much of a drain on the system).
I'm using blank 'Ghost White' PBT caps.

I lurk around here from time to time, but just discovered this thread so thought I'd share some of mine. The purple one is indeed the minivan, really a great keyboard, my go to 40. Surprisingly practical for it' size.

What are you building?

This may be a bit off topic due to it being a bunch of questions not a keyboard photo but:
- How many of you use a 40% at work or even as a daily driver?
- What type of work do you do? Programming, data inputs, architecture?
Want to know because I used mine daily & it was damn fine but then I got HHKB (really the size is what matters here) and I stopped using my MA42 after that. Thinking about making a new 40% layout for myself but can't decide if the multiple FN layers are worth it.

minivan. it's already built it's the prototype that I won, I love it lots and use it at work cuz it fits in the drawer.
but I got neat case made for it coming soon and ofc the light cycle caps on MD, whenever those come. it's alps too :D

Use a JD45 at work programming, troubleshooting etc. I'll probably switch back to my HHKB-layout B.face once I got Xondat's X60. JD45's case has weird proportion -- thicker bezel at the front and thiner on the back -- and this always bugs me. :(

The JD45 looks like something I would like but I'm leaning toward making an HHKB-layout 60% MX keyboard. 40%'s are fun but I don't travel that much.
I've used a MA42, JD40, and JD45 as daily drivers. Usually for papers, excel, MATLAB, and NX/ other school stuff. The most important part of using a 40% as a daily is getting the layout perfect for how you plan to use it. As soon as you find a comfortable set of function layers/ fn keys there isn't too much difference between 40% and 60%. That being said, 90% of the time I use a 60% because having numbers on a function layer can get tiring if you always need them.

Yeap, that must be it. I had made the perfect layout for my MA42 but it must've been that number row why I switched to HHKB. BTW, how's it going with MA52?
Since I don't think I've posted this before, and this got bumped I'll post a shot of my JD-45.

However I might recommend against whatever thing I read that led me to buy heavy-duty resistors. These puppies barely fit under there, and in fact do most of the work holding it off the table.

I used this regularly when I had a working laptop. But it died so I set it aside until I was trying to rebuild two surplus-sale bought Optiplexes at once.

Only my second build. A JD40 kit from 1Up keyboards. It's also, as you can tell, my first experience at covering a 40% with caps. But, what the heck, it's mine & I built it myself!

Have been thinking about the Planck add-on of the Borealis key set also.
Ideally of course is to also have the base set but then only the alpha keys will be used with a spending of another $90... So I'm still thinking.
Thanks for sharing.
... Wanna get a Dasher/Dancer modifier set together? Maybe I can even proxy it to you :p

I stared at the Dasher & Dancer set massdrop for quite a while mesmerized by its simplistic beauty and its blue color also matches the blue theme of the 40% that I want to build...
But I came to my senses quite quickly: Dasher & Dancer is going to be here at the earliest Q3 2017, and I'm already plotting to get another SA set: DT Round 7 for a 'gigantic' ortholinear board.MoreShow Image(http://www.diskont24.com/readimage.php?id=56504)
On the other hand, Borealis is real - it will be shipped within a month and it's blue also and even GiD. :D

Nice board. I presume it's not meant for programming or at least not primarily? Would you be so kind and share your keymapping? Don't have a JD45 but this makes me think about getting one. :D

The JD40 is great but it doesn't work with dvorak so I made my own 42%. :thumb:
I'd love to see it next to a JD40 at some point!
I don't have any extra PCBs but my friend who built one may want to sell it. There will never be an ortholinear MA42 unless someone else decides to design one, I've never been a fan of non staggered boards.(Attachment Link)

Are you interested in making one of these for me-- I already have switches, keycaps and USB cable (I'd need the stabilizers). This is just the sort of rig I need, a 40% that's Dvorak compliant. In fact if you make it an ortholinear PCB that would be even better.

Cool! Sorry, just seeing this now. Let me know, otherwise I'll just get a Planck kit. Do you use the numpad more than the characters that your forty keyboard is missing?
Numbers are on layer 2 of the top row, but I really like using the numpad. Makes things a lot easier.

I'm in the middle of a similar build myself. Casual usage isn't bad with numbers on a different layer, but sometimes you need heavier data entry and nothing beats a dedicated numpad you can quickly pull out and utilize.
Your set looks great!

I put my jelly POMs on some silent blacks and ended up pulling a few stems out of the housings  I've lubed them with some thin krytox and they fit much better nowMy daily driver! I didn't! They fit quite well. Did people need to lube them in the past? I've found that they are not too tight.

I've no idea how you all can get used to arrow keys being in one row. It just doesn't seem intuitive to me and I've tried them before on vintage Apple boards in the past.Use Vim. You'll get used to it real fast :)

We’ll allow it. It’s too beautiful to be a one-and-done.
Here’s what I’m using as my daily drivers over the last couple weeks. UT47 from a group buy on Keyhive. They are really likeable boards, with a delightfully intelligent layout. The white one makes a racket because Kailh Box Clickies, but the blue one makes a smug thock (because it has no right to sound this nice when it only cost ~$25). “Click” and “Clack”, you might say.

(Attachment Link)I really like this board. It's just too bad that 40% is a bit too limiting for me. It's not even that the number row is gone that is the problem, its that the [];'./ keys are gone. It just throws it off too much for me when trying to touch type.

Seems to be a sandwich construction. Would you offer HHKB-style top piece if that's the case? Not that it would be practical but it definitely looks cute.
I'm still adjusting and trying things with 40% keyboards, but I think this is getting close to my own endgame. Like before, this has face plates that you can swap out for new looks at a cheaper price than a new set of keycaps. It's also my first PCB design that has backlighting! It was a little tricky to do, since I'm still very much a beginner, but I'm super proud that I accomplished it as well. This is is going to have a pretty short life on my desktop however, since it's being shipped to a friend of mine as a present for them.Really cool! That alpha/mod combo is really nice as well.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/EZ6CbKq.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/TZ6OxpO.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/4XAVijA.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/Hm033rv.jpg)

Reaching the spacebar is a bit hard at first, but you get used to it. And yeah the layout is quite complicated with a lot of tap dance :)
I swap these boards weekly.
the one with mt3 susuwatari uses cherry mx black while the vomit one uses gateron black. I like the sound of mx black better, though.

Very nice! I've never gotten used to home-row-mods (hrm). Are you using hrm or macros? Would be interesting to hear how you converged to your layout!

I see! Yeah, I've been using a Corne now for some months, have tried to only use 5 columns, but I type so irregular and to me it seems hrm are not optimal for that.
i'm using homerow mods and combos on these keyboards [1]. to be honest, i cannot really remember when i started using those features. perhaps when i started using <40 keys keyboards. but i remember that i struggled for a week or so to tune my typing time and tempo. i was a slow typist and still is, though.
