[attach=24 align=center]This is my first attempt at creating a keyset. I figured entering MD's Keycap Set Design Contest would be a good start. I realize the competition will be tough, but if there is enough interest I will continue DSA Season of the Witch as a traditional IC if it doesn't win.
While DSA SOTW didn't win, it was in good company. I feel it fared well in the contest. I'm really happy for all the feedback I've received so far and I'd like to continue to develop it. Bare with me. I'm trying to learn how this whole process works as I go. I wanted to give a better idea of what the keyset would look like so, for now, added is a render by u/janglad of DSA SOTW on a TKL (Mech27-TKL by 27). Updated 2017-10-25

Hello. As I'm sure you've noticed, things have been slow going for the past few months. This has been due to family matters stacking up during the spring semester. I assure you I haven't dropped the project. Apologies for the silence. Some of you have asked about the project's status. Massdrop will be planning keysets for late 2018/early 2019 and the present aim is for DSA Season of the Witch to find its way into a slot during that timeframe. Is there a backup plan if this doesn't happen? Yes. But first things first. Let's have a shot at dropping this via Massdrop, shall we? Updated 2018-06-15

I'm so happy to be able to say that he's still with us today and doing well despite his injuries. I'd like to get back in the saddle with this and would like to do so by starting off with a poll to gather community feedback on kit design. I have worked on this with a glacial pace in the background, but feel like I'm at a point when some critical choices need to be made and I'd like your input to better visualize in which direction I should steer the keyset. Major kit revision. Mono alphas with an optional kit for secondary numerics. Alphas, modifiers and secondary numerics support ISO UK. Consequently the NORDE kit has fewer keys. Ortho and 40s are one single kit. The Ergodox kit also supports the UniGo66. The second ALT key is replaced with ALT GR consistently throughout all kits. Vortex and Minila keyboards supported as a separate kit. Please note that the kit images are downloaded .png files from KLE and as such are meant first and foremost to illustrate the kit layouts rather than being correct renders of key profile and legend sizes. Looking into offering an artisan raffle as part of the GB. Kits have undergone a few changes and will be up later. The major one being combining the Modifiers kit with the Extension kit. Commissioning novelties took quite some time as the work had to pass hands and real life troubles caused delays. Now they are here and I hope you'll feel it's been well worth the wait. OutragedPudding has done one hell of a job to translate two iconic images from the movie Halloween III, the jack-o'-lantern and the silver shamrock, to doubleshot ABS novelties. Final kit renders by Oblotzky will be added soon. They are getting their final tweaks and with the novelties here, we should be all set to move towards the final countdown [sings Europe in falsetto]. Back from the grave! And with Halloween just around the corner, what better opportunity to unleash the final renders by Oblotzky upon the living! Also, deep apologies for going on a hiatus without prior notice. It's been a heavy year, nothing Covid-19 related, but still very much heavy and tiring. From this point on, I'll resume talks with Signature Plastics and resellers. I think a Halloween release would've been awesome, but insanely hard to time right so that was never on the horizon. A related artisan drop was something I really wanted from the very start, but at this point I just feel it could risk pushing a planned GB even further into the future. When I first got into MK, I assumed DSA would be my favorite profile. I have since learned it is also my least favorite :P

Haha. Ouch. Thing is, at least for now, the profile is heavily adapted to what's available in the contest.
- SP's standard ABS colors already have suitable colors for this keyset, but DSA is the only profile available.
- The other options were either GMK, which would mean custom colors and a really expensive price tag...
- ...or XDA/PBT, which wouldn't work with this colorway.
- Because the chosen colors are standard, the price can also be kept down.
- SA is not an alternative due to currently long lead times.

SA is not allowed in the contest. GMK would be expensive and have high MOQs due to custom colors. If the keyset wins, I could imagine a future R2 in a different profile. If it doesn't win, I'll consider ways forward.

Thank you! I'm trying to prioritize versatility and a daily-driver friendly look while still not compromising on colors. So that makes me really glad to hear! I went for SP's stock ABS colors and kept the amount low. The set is doubleshot ABS. I just noticed I forgot to put it in the presentation.
I feel about novelties the same way I feel about artisans. Most of the time, I just don't feel their style and they feel gimmicky. Then once in a while there's something that'll make my jaw drop in awe (e.g. SA Camping, GMK Nautilus, Seacaps, Rosekey Koicaps).

There's some tough competition in there. Sets that I thought were already about to go into production... like dark sky. And bounty hunter was in there, which already has a 40% kit produced and a full set on the way. Good stuff!
Yeah, there sure is. And a lot more entries than I first thought. It'll be interesting to see how all the sets fare!

Nice combo! I see what you mean. Apart from slight color variations, I assume the big difference is the background colors; black on GMK Charred Orange and dark grey on GMK Hydro.

Actually, no. I thought it'd end up looking more a washed out grey/steel blue too. At first I chalked it up to inconsistencies between KLE, KLE-render, the rendering program, the laptop screen and the ABS color codes, but since I'm not the only one seeing it, I'm following up. If worst comes to worst, maybe I have to look into a different color to come closer to what I'm looking for...

I'm trying to figure this one out. It seems this is what the color codes from KLE will end up looking like in a render. So I'm following up and have ordered color chips from Signature Plastics to see what the actual colors will look like when manufactured.
I live in Sweden so it might take a while for the samples to reach me by regular international mail. Espcecially if the package get stuck in customs. I'll update with a white balanced image of the chips as soon as I can!

It's difficult to give a truthful representation when colors show up differently in KLE, KLE-render, a professional render, depending on a screen's calibration, on photo quality and the intended manufactured plastic. Seeing these colors on sample chips will help a lot. Let me know what you think once they are up!

I have received color samples from Signature Plastics now. BFR is one hell of a tricky color to represent! I'm still trying to get it at least somewhat right in a picture. It's what I wanted for the keyset though! So that's good. :)
It's a dark, but still kinda washed out, steel gray with a hint of blue. The hue is much closer to KLE, but the tone is much closer to the render posted so far. In fact all images I've seen online where the hue is right, the tone looks too light.
I'll post a pic soon of the chips. Even if it turns out potato.

However, I'd argue this keyset is very different from GMK Nautilus. Unfortunately there are color matching issues in the render on the top of the page which has resulted in a more ultramarine blue hue than it is. The color is much closer to the dark steel grey in the KLE renders, but the tone is much closer to the dark in the render. I attached a pic of Signature Plastics color chips for these color codes in a comment just above. It's very hard to get the color matching right so that's my priority right now.
I'll have to look into barred F/J. Not sure if SP offers that option. If possible, I'd like that as well though.
A proper kit breakdown is in the works. So far, the kits presented is the layout that was used in Massdrop's contest, but this will be updated. I intend to offer ortho support so that feedback is much appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion and for showing interest in this project! I didn't even consider icon mods before, but now that you mention it, I think it would look great too. It's certainly something I will consider. :)
A small status update. There will be stuff coming up soon. I have a first render I'll upload soon, I'm slowly working on updated kits (the initial layout of kits was adapted to the MD keyset contest) and I'm currently looking into possible novelties as well as something special. ;)
I haven't dropped the project and I still very much would like to hear what people in the community would like to see from DSA SOTW.

I also wanted to do a uniform profile because it's more cost efficient layout-wise; i.e. fewer keycaps necessary for covering alternative layouts (like Dvorak, Colemak, Colmak Mod-DH, Workman, Norman etc.) and other languages (Scandinavian, German, UK layouts etc.).
Also, DSA feels very retro-industrial to me. I dig that and I also feel that it works well with the Halloween III theme (I'm thinking about the scenes towards the end with all the industrial computers set up to summon Samhain). :)
What was your thoughts on choice of profile?

Glad you like the colorway and thanks for the input! Were there any specific keys you wondered about or had suggestions for? I'm continuously tweaking the 40%/ortho kit.
In your link I see you've added arrow keys. If you'd be satisfied with directional legends, you could cut a kit right there already.
You knowm lately I've been wondering about whether to split the kit into two, but there are two things that have prompted me so far to keep it as one: 1) looking at previous drops, while dedicated ortho and 40% kits would likely reach MOQ, they also seem less likely to reach higher drop points and lower prices; 2) 40% and ortho boards share a lot of 1u keys and both are flexible in their use of layouts; i.e. more keys to choose from for user customization.
These are just some of my thoughts at the moment and I'd appreciate any feedback and/or suggestions to make this kit (or kits) better and more compatible.

Just feel the kit design is kind of out of date. More recent sets include split Rshift and Backspace in base mod kit (like R2 canvas) which will immediately improve the capability a lot. Also hope to see a split spacebar set available.
I've noticed recent kits include these keys, but I wonder why split LShift + split Backspace is included in a mod kit meant to cover standard layouts? HHKB-layouts are still dependent on extension and spacebar kits so is it because it's become more common with 60% form factors including arrow clusters? That would at least account for split RShift. I think could include it. I'm still tweaking the kits. :)

I hear you, but unfortunately that would defeat one of the driving ideas behind this keyset. I'm a Swedish ISO layout user and happen to really like alternative layouts. To me, that's something custom keyboards have the ability and opportunity to do and to boldly go wher no QWERTY has gone before. A uniform profile is an absolute necessity for that.
As for a small update. Currently working on novelty key design. This is one keyset that definitely needs at least one novelty key, don't you agree? ;)

You know, in the beginning I did! I was since talked out of it by someone more experienced in the keycap design community though. I believe the reason was that it wasn't popular enough and DSA was a better bet. For now, I feel the lower, uniform profile of DSA suits the keyset well, but if there's ever a future round 2 of DSA SOTW, I could imagine it reincarnating in SA R3 or another profile.
I've been toying with the idea though of going full mono numericals, to fit with the ideas of minimalism, cost efficiency and layout coverage. Like what ChrisSwires is doing with his excellent DSA Alchemy (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=94310.0). This would lower the key count of otherwise quite expensive kits like NORDE for one. However, I worry that DSA SOTW has been in IC for so long now, such a major change in aesthetics would alienate those who've followed the project for a long time.
Currently only working on one novelty keycap. A friend of mine who's a graphic designer by trade will design the graphics (he hasn't done keycaps before, but has done other AAA work). The technical details are a bit hard to grasps though so it's a bit slow going, but I hope we'll have something nice to show for it in the end. :)

This is due to KLE not handling that particular symbol well. When typing the character, or entering its ALT code, into the field, it shows correctly as "ß", but in the image it turns up as "ss". I haven't found a workaround to this so I have it down to a bug in KLE. The manufactured legend would naturally be "ß".
As for third alt graph symbolds, these are usually not included in custom keysets due to costs.
I'm currently reworking the kits following some new ideas and feedback I've gotten. It'll be up sometime soon.

Mono alphas usually, and in this context, refer to mono legends (for the alphanumerical keys). This means the alphanumerical keys would only have one legend per key. This would mean cheaper production costs, but also wider compatibility since for many layouts, like various language layouts, it's the secondary legends that cause incompatibility.
Also, it looks uniform and pretty, especially on ortholinear layouts. ;)

That's why I left an opening in the poll for respondents to say "both". ;) But yeah, it's a tough choice. I think this keyset could benefit from mono alphas quite a lot, both in terms of a minimalist aesthetics, cost efficiency and compatibility. However, I realize DSA SOTW has been in IC for so damn long now, it's not a change I could make to the set without at the very least opening up for a discussion and gauging interest first. I'm hoping as many as possible will take the poll to give me an idea of what they're looking for in this keyset. So thanks for taking the poll! :)

Keep in mind that Vortex and Minila users are a very small usergroup. The poll results so far reflect this as well. That is why brand specific keys ended up in a Vortex/Minila kit.

Hey! I noticed you, and some others, have left comments regarding keys you'd like to see included in the kits. Actually, I realized earlier I forgot to upload the updated kit layouts. Don’t know about the others but IIRC there’s already a 1.5u DEL, so only 1 key missing for Vortex. Whichever way you go, I’d prefer not to buy another kit just for one key, especially since I’d need the Extension Kit for the 1u CTRL/ALT/FN. Just noticed a 1u PN would be useful too.

Race 3 needs a 1u ALT, CTRL and/or CODE/SUPER/CMD key for right side of Spacebar. Mac users would need 1u CMD/SUPER + Fn + CTRL, while others would need 1u ALT + Fn + CTRL. Some other layouts needs this too.
Check out the attached image. Bottom one is XDA Canvas needed to cover Vortex Race 3.
1u ALT, CTRL, CODE, FN keys and 1.75u RSHIFT are covered by the Extension kit.
It's true that 1x 1u CTRL is sometimes used for 60-65 % layouts with bottom right nav clusters, just as Vortex Race 3. I'll add this to the Extension kit. :thumb:

Update!
Everything is moving ahead. Proxies are ready for the EU (mykeyboard.eu), the US (TKC) and Australia (Daily Clack). An Asian proxy is hopefully underway soon. I've gotten a first quote from Melissa at Signature Plastics. Work on novelties will hopefully start during this week. I closed the poll a few days later than planned because I forgot about it. I've gone through your responses and hope I have addressed most in kit rev. 2 already, but there'll be a few more tweaks down the road as well. We have exciting times ahead!

Hello. DSA SOTW is still alive. Here is the long awaited novelties update. This is a keyset that would've felt awkward to release without novelties. Commissioning novelties took quite some time as the work had to pass hands and real life troubles caused delays. Now they are here and I hope you'll feel it's been well worth the wait. OutragedPudding has done one hell of a job to translate two iconic images from the movie Halloween III, the jack-o'-lantern and the silver shamrock, to doubleshot ABS novelties. Final kit renders by Oblotzky will be added soon. They are getting their final tweaks and with the novelties here, we should be all set to move towards the final countdown [sings Europe in falsetto].

I don't think it would take any more time invested and they seem to be quite responsive to designers looking into this profile. The sculpture is quite nice. I own both the Dolch and Honeywell 40s sets in DSS profile, and I've purchased two kits of the newly released Tecla DSS.

Yeah, but it's too early to tell yet what it will be. Just sketching on different ideas at this point. Besides, I want to see DSA SOTW finalized first.

Also happy to hear you're stoked about the 40s kit! That was the kit I put the most effort into actually. Quite early on, this keyset started out as oriented towards alternative layouts, especially Nordic, Colemak, Dvorak, 40s and ortho layouts. I hope most will find something in it to cover their needs, be it full size battleships or Nordic Dvorak 40%! :)

When the kit prices have been decided and the proxies are ready, I guess. Can't say anything now since I assume it also depends on what GB:s are lined up in their pipelines before this can run. Up until this point though, the slowest process has been commissioning renders. Now that we're past that, we'll see if we can't pick up the pace a bit. :)
