if you plan on sealing the pot with that model M, then i would say no. all that will happen is a slight hissing as the environment pressure in your garage rises < 1mmhg from atm

sir... do you know what the average rating on the safety valve is on that pot?

I have to upgrade the safety valve on mine because it sometime pops... keep that in mind.
also make sure that you use teflon tape on every single piece.

if the top leaks.... I removed mine and put in silicone molding as a gasket. just don't cure the silicone material with the top on the pot. it will never come off.

The safety valve is rated for 80 PSI, the top has a silicon gasket installed, and all of the parts have been installed with teflon tape :)

Tested some of the equipment earlier.  I need to make sure I understand how the compressor works.  It has a gauge for tank pressure and a gauge for pressure in the line.  Would that line pressure also mean tank pressure at some point?  I bought the compressor that I did in hopes that I could install fewer parts, but I don't mind buying a gauge for the pot as well.

I have 2 gauges on my pot. one before the valve to let the air in and one on the pot where the paint is supposed to blow out.

pressure test the tank over night. if you get over 10 psi drop overnight then you have a major leak.

mix some dawn dish soap in some water and rub this on all the areas that could have a leak. it will blow little bubbles from the area that leaks.

not all silicone sealant is the same! READ THE DATASHEET FOR YOUR SILICONE CAREFULLY. good rtv silicone sealants/gasket makers will give you ultimate tensile strength at their thickest allowable application most silicones can't stand up to that kind of heat and pressure.

the heavy duty permatex and motivative silicones are exactly what the doctor ordered for this application. in fact, i have this insane RTV159 that you could probably set a pressure pot cap out of.

I know the picture above really sucks, but I thought it was worth illustrating what is happening with these molds.

Legos are pretty cool.  When pouring into legos the connection "bumps" are all accessible to the silicon.  This means that the silicon mold can be used in conjunction with regular legos.

In picture 1, I create a mold for my keycap tops.  The keycap bottoms are hollow and do not accept any silicon.  When the mold is released there is still air under the keys.

after the silicon cures the mold is flipped over and a lego structure is built on the mold to use as a large inlet for pouring.  That's right... I built a lego structure into the mold.  Why?  BECAUSE IT COULD WORK REALLY WELL >:O

Oh my gosh we could all use one >.<  Gave the first Wasdson cap to my local financial backer.  He was thrilled with the results.  Prompted me to make a V3 hand-e-cap.  Keep your eyes peeled for updates.

Yes!  I am very excited for all of the progress here.  :D

Yes the difference is pretty intense.  We should skype sometime and compare experiences.  I've been messing around with more of smooth-on's materials and came across a few great options.

You're getting better with every new update!  I really like those molded caps!!  Very well done!

so binge, remember how we were talking about partially cured thermosets? here's the thermoset bible in abridged form. the short answer is that most thermosets can be partially cured. what actually happens it that a thermoset is defined as a poly that goes from a goo full of monomers and slag and what have you and then as you put energy into it goes into a glass transition and then eventually becomes a gel. hence, there are three distinct phases to most thermosets during the application of energy

A: no energy. goo

B: vitrification. some monomers have joined into polymer networks. however, the compound is generally considered glass and the thermoset has not set, which is marked by:

C: gelification. this is a full cure and means that the thermoset has become a single infinitely long polymer network (that is, unlike say thermoplastics and most other polymers, there are no end-caps to the polymer chains, thermosets are defined by the fact that they form cyclical polymer networks at full cure, and actually less by the fact that energy makes them hard. what it specifically does to them is make these cyclical polymer networks.

you can suspend a thermoset in a state of vitrification with impurities (eg, air) removed. since it's glass at this point (B), it shouldn't take on additional air bubbles. obviously this depends on the thermoset material properties. sets for which state B is very soft are obviously going to have a harder time being partially set, for example.

so in short, all you need is one compession pot and a carefully chosen thermoset for an entire community to have molding material. pretty cool considering we went from 0 to 2 in a flash ;)

see: http://www.primethermosets.com/introtothermosets.pdf

I'm interested in the process of how you made the latest caps, mind sharing?

This entire thread is all about how I've been making the caps.  I also did a live demo at keycon where I discussed a bit of the process.  Without making things too hard for me would you be able to narrow down your point on inquiry?  It would really help me deliver useful information :D

*SNIP*

Why work with thermosets that are partially cured instead of the two part chemicals domo and I have been using?  Maybe I missed something, and I'll do a bit more reading, but I'm really just trying to grasp the more learned understanding and try to apply it to what creative process exists.

nothing to see here... move along.

I get how you made the top of the keycap. I'm interested in how you did the stem.
