Title: [IC] "Hello" M0110 60% reboot - GB Date 10th June
Post by: well_cooper on Sun, 14 February 2021, 04:18:22
"Hello, again" M0110 reboot
Inspired by the OG 0110, M0110 bring some modern touch to the classic design.

Previous run

Popcorn anyone?

This board was previously running on Drop, yes that one. Y0ghurt, who is the original designer (now part of FanC Studio) gave his design to Ryloo to manufacture a small batch for his local group buy ONLY in early 2020. He only became aware at pickup that extra 100+ plus units have been sold through Drop and Ryloo was going to take care of QC, packing, and after-sale service and we all know what happened afterward.
He has been kept out of the loop in their communications and only became aware of all the issues when I presented screen grabs in Drop’s discussion thread. He has since discontinued all relationships with Ryloo.

Moving forward

All “Hello, again” M0110 will be manufactured in-house and provide timely updates through my Discord channel. QC and packing will be done in-house prior to shipping.
If you have purchased a kit or know someone who has previously purchased through Drop please share the word, FanC Studio and I are looking to provide after-sale service to those units. Aftersale form Click Here (https://forms.gle/2NsnixqiKJDFJqzWA)

Title: Re: [IC] "Hello" M0110 60% reboot - April 22 UPDATE (Beige sample and GB DATE)
Post by: well_cooper on Sun, 14 February 2021, 04:23:23
RESERVED

UPDATE:
03 June
GB is pushed back by 5 days (sorry, finalizing purchasing page and testing site links)
Powder-coated Beige prototype has arrived, the colour has a slight greenish.

FanC studio has informed me Beige option in the GB production will be closer to PANTONE 11-0105 TPG Antique White
(https://i.imgur.com/OrNO0B8.jpg)

30 May
GB date set 5th 10 June 2021 @ 7 PM GMT+8 time zone (about 4 weeks GB window however might close early), GB post will be submitted for approval tomorrow

22 April
After many attempts here is the E-Coate Beige sample with GMK Corsa Auto :D
(https://i.imgur.com/AHUldVy.jpg)

PCB prototype has passed QC, it will utilize aio3's unified daughterboard design. Main PCB and Daughte board will have antistatic measure built-in.

GB Date is tentatively set to go live at the end of April through my storefront: Thocc Supply (link will be published at the GB post here

03 Mar
More
1. Beige colour is undergoing testing, more likely to be Electric static coated Beige (smooth matt finish)

2. Properly shaped gasket kit is on order

3. Removed Left, Right, and Spacebar mounting point on the plate due to popular demand

4. New plate will also add in split Spacebar support (Drop's run didn't support split Spacebar)

3. PCB is getting revised completely, mainly to support JST connector cable and outright supporting the latest Unified-Daughterboard design published by ai03. Will also add-in anti-static measure to the main PCB as well.
NOTE
This means the new Daughterboard will not be compatible with cases purchased from Drop in their previous run

17 Feb
Prototype unit has arrived, will build it and upload a sound test video
Badge can be removed in the HHKB version, more on that when GB is ready to start
Gasket conversion kit is currently on hold until after CNY
Beige or warm white variant is a possibility and will have to confirm with surface treatment factory after CNY

Hmmm

1. Would love to see an option to opt out from the badge thing in HHKB version

2. Can you please show an exploded view of the keeb and attach any sound tests? Would be definitely helpful to assess the sound, given that I’m not very familiar with the previous run.

3. Can we agree on timely updates here on Geekhack, and not on Discord server number 10004169000 I’d need to join for no apparent reason at all? Mailing lists would work too.

All in all, kinda interesting. Will follow the thread. Also now I want to read on the Drop drama lol

OK yes I like the design, but a lot of people had issues the 1st time around.  I appreciate you have explained that in your post.  Also I am still very sore from the VN66 that never materialized and was another great take on the Apple board.  I will follow the thread to see how this develops.

1. A plain badge could be a possibility too
2. Pre-production sample has been shipped and is a couple of days away from me, I will record and upload a sound test video here. Exploded view are not up yet since we are still working on the gasket kit, shall put one up when its been finalized.

Thanks for a prompt answer!

Regarding the badge, would still love to have an option to not have it completely. It ruins the symmetry for me and also it’s exactly in a place where I often rest a side of my palm with HHKB-like boards so even the slightest protrusion would end up in an unpleasant feeling for me.

"60% Universal Layout PCB"

I know this is top mount, but do you think is there any chance one could adapt it to use other 60% universal layout PCBs instead? I ask from the point of view of someone who would love to be able to use Alps switches in this case if at all possible (and I don't assume this kit's included PCB would support that).

... of all the issues...

What issues did round 1 have?

I saw the board on drop at the time but did not follow anything related to the buy. So I am out of the loop and would like to hear a bit more about the problems and what will be done to prevent them (besides better QC, support and communication).

Since the PCB is connecting with a daughterboard do you think the USB port could be moved to the center?

Also, the bottom row of the plate is a mess with all of the layouts you're trying to support. I would much prefer a dedicated 7u spacebar bottom row plate, especially for the HHKB version. I would also like to see a half plate option if possible.

+1 to beige

I like the badge, but it maybe it's a little too close to the caps? It feels a little cramped to me.

alps support?

I have personally thought about ALPS support, tho 3rd party PCB could be a good alternative option and since plate file is open source that can be altered to support Alps switches.

The reason not to officially support Alps is that since FanC and I never designed PCB for this type of switches means there is a good chance more thing will go wrong and pushing GB date wayyyy back

Both pic are E-white, second pic colour look different is due to lighting set-up in renders

The fact your PCB will be open source is highly appreciated in this case!
How will the kit's PCB be attached to the plate in this design? Are the screw holes the same as a regular standard 60% PCB (Vortex style)?

What is the specific hotswap layout? Bonus points if Backspace and RShift are split by default; that'd be an instant buy.

Otherwise, really like the form factor, and everything about this board checks my boxes. It would be cool to pair this with XDA Oblique.

Just the plate file will be open source atm
PCB will be held on either with solder joints or hot-swap sockets pressure when switches are installed, avoiding standoff and screws that create still typing experience at certain places

Most likely it will be a standard 60% to be compatible with both HHKB top case and standard top case but you do have a legit point. I'll pitch the idea to FanC

We are already talking about removing those mounting points, it's all depending on if the gasket conversion kit provides stable typing feedback with just 4 contact surfaces

I joined for the Drop run and I'm very pleased with the board overall, the packaging was poor but I had no issues with my product.

However the price point being $100+ above the Drop run feels a bit off.

Would be nice if the compatibility was kept with the daughter boards that Evelien-Lillian (anykeys.eu) designed so that one could use plain-60 with this board as well.

I've also joined the Drop run of this board. Still one of my favorite designs so far. If I didn't already own the board, I'd join this GB in a heartbeat!

Good Luck!

Overall, I actually love the look of the board a lot.  I was lucky enough to not have my case scratched.  Good luck with the new GB.  I hope you guys could fix some of the problems I pointed out.

Can we please get Alps support and Apple key cap support?
"60% Universal Layout PCB"

I know this is top mount, but do you think is there any chance one could adapt it to use other 60% universal layout PCBs instead? I ask from the point of view of someone who would love to be able to use Alps switches in this case if at all possible (and I don't assume this kit's included PCB would support that).
+1 for Alps support and option for no badge.

alps support?

I have personally thought about ALPS support, tho 3rd party PCB could be a good alternative option and since plate file is open source that can be altered to support Alps switches.

The reason not to officially support Alps is that since FanC and I never designed PCB for this type of switches means there is a good chance more thing will go wrong and pushing GB date wayyyy back

For everyone asking for Alps support, you can literally modify the plate file and throw a Hineybush H60 PCB in it. That's what I did with the Hello v1 from Drop.

Hiney H60 has MX/Alps support, along with a JST connector. If anyone needs help with a plate file, let me know when the v2 file becomes available.

So, I joined the Drop GB.  There were a few of problems that I ran into:

  • the plate didn't actually support split space bar layouts.
  • QMK firmware was not merged into the mainline.  It was just in some random Google Drive buried in the Drop comment thread...  I actually had to spent a lot of time porting the firmware back into QMK's main repo: https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/pull/11050 (https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/pull/11050).  But still, VIA support is not in there since I don't know much about VIA and left it out of the port.  I also skipped the split space bar layouts since the plate actually doesn't support them.  There is also an active fix waiting to be merged: https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/pull/11685#pullrequestreview-579728709 (https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/pull/11685#pullrequestreview-579728709).  I think you guys really shouldn't overlook details like the QMK firmware and be more active working within the QMK main repo.
  • The PCB design is also a bit sketchy as I broke connector strip for the daughter board and had to order some from ebay...
  • The case is quite pingy and could definitely use some foams (both plate & case).

Overall, I actually love the look of the board a lot.  I was lucky enough to not have my case scratched.  Good luck with the new GB.  I hope you guys could fix some of the problems I pointed out.
wow, what a mess that been left to us. we try to pick up the pieces that were left unattended by ryloo and Drop. Not a coder myself but I'll try to look into github repo issues, thank you for bringing it up

Nice update, I am glad you removed the plate mounting points.

Why are rows 3-5 so much more squished together?

Pretty sure those keycaps aren't mounted, but just sitting on the plate

If you're keeping the badge are there any options for a custom design request of the badge? Or release of the badge dimensions so I can commission someone for one.

is it just me or is the beige prototype a bit greenish or is that just the lighting/background tricking me? Board looks very pretty though and I am definitely interested!

Yeah, those keys with stabs aren't mounted but placed on the plate, so it looks more crampted

From what I read on the discord, there will be NO badges available.

Any more deets on the GB? Are the number of units capped at anything? Where it will be sold?

That is correct, no badge will be on the HHKB version.

GB will be going through my site Thocc.Supply (https://thocc.supply) and time frame will be 4 weeks. A soft cap will be around 250 units to keep production in reasonalbe time frames.

Thats awesome. Now I just need to find what to do with my drop e-white one so I can grab this beige case. Speaking of the drop case will the usb daughterboard of this run be compatible with that case (like screw placement the same?)
