Kittens Favorite Switches
« on: Tue, 17 December 2013, 23:33:47 »
So - to all my fellow kittens, what is your favorite switch? It could be a specific MX (like MX blue), or alps, topre, buckling spring, ect. I'm really curious how many people out there prefer something other than MX. It also would be helpful if you've listed which switches you've tried for comparison.

I've tried mx blue, brown, and black. I didn't like black and all. Blue is my favorite, but I use brown because I need to be able to double tap keys for gaming - something much easier on brown than blue. I really like browns too, but my next mx keyboard will likely have blues so I can use it if I need to type something that's going to be very time consuming.

i like my blues the best currently. I'm waiting on an ergo-clear modded board though, we'll see how that goes.

also, why are you calling us kittens?

I have used topre, BS, browns, blues, blacks, ergo clears and greens.

I like BS > 55g blacks > stock greens > 62g clears > blues >>>>>>>>>> browns.

I have no opinion on Topre, I used it for about 30 key presses.

Yea - I'd be really interested to try buckling springs. Are they anything like blues?

I've only tried 3 mx switches (Red,Blue,Green) and white alps but I like mx reds and blues the best. I like blues for typing and reds for gaming. White alps feel similar to blues but the white alps feel kind of ...meh?  I don't know how to describe it but it doesn't quite add up to how blues feel. Greens were just not my style but I can see how some people like it. :p

Well topre is just one type of switch, either you like it or not.

But ergodox is custom and theres alot of switches to choose, a novice might not be able to tell clears from blacks.

Dont get me wrong its a good board, just not for newbies

I think I may have neglected to partition newbies in the past..

There are n00bs who are young children and new to keyboards

There are n00bs who are adults and new to keyboards..

I think MOST adults can handle an EGDX and putting it together..

Kids,, maybe not without supervision.

I REALLY want to try beamspring, but haven't. I have tried: Buckling spring (M and F), Cherry blue, Cherry brown, Cherry blacks (I believe), Monterey blue, Topre (waterfall weighted RealForce), foam and foil, unknown linear typewriter switch.

F buckling springs > Monterey Blue = topre > M buckling springs > unknown linear switch = cherry black = cherry blue > cherry brown > sharpened nails > foam and foil

I've tried neither Alps, nor Topre (shame on me), and BS is not really my cup of tea, but I could see myself using them occasionally.

Of the mx series, my favourite is by far Jailhouse modded blues, with no click. Second to that comes browns.

Yea - I've heard good things about beam spring. I wish there was like, a huge board out there where you could put a whole hand on each type of switch to really try it out. I really can't tell much of anything from just one switch on a tester kit. Just because you can push something with one finger and you like it doesn't mean it'll feel the same when you type on it.

Do they even make new keyboards with alps / beam / buckling? Or do you have to buy used?

I guess you can't do a topre ergodox ey? :) I really want to try topre and the ergo. I'd be interested to see how "ergonomic" it is. Does it really reduce that much strain? I'm sure it doesn't work well at all for gaming, right?

You should get a Matias keyboard with his latest switches you will be amazed at how far ALPs switches have come.  Also get a spare REALFORCE or HHKB too as this is another switch far removed from the general population when it comes to using a different style of keyboard.  Even though I'm not a crazed Thorpie fan like some here on GH, it's still a nice piece of tech to type on.

Trampoline and latex modded, lubed and stickered ErgoClears with Originative 62g Limited springs and thick POM caps!

They're very quiet, tactile and feel simply awesome.

Best I've ever used. Though I haven't used Topre (just tested in the shop and didn't like) and I like to be able to mod my boards and there aren't enough aftermarket keycaps. I had an Apple IIc with Alps switches, but I don't know how they compare to modern Alps variants.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Duuude, is this a kitten GIF thread now?

BS is ultimately my favorite switch, but since the only BS board to have anything above 2KRO is the Model F (and I can't seem to find an AT at a decent price) I settle for MX Blues on my daily drivers. Clears are good switches as well...

There are no new boards that use alps buckling or beam springs. There is Matias which uses switches inspired by alps (and compatible with alps). So it is possible to put vintage alps on what might as well be a new alps board.

There are projects here to make both buckling spring over capacitive and buckling spring over membrane, but I've yet to see a beam spring project due to the lack of switches available (we don't have a company to produce them, and people don't like ripping apart existing beam spring boards to harvest them for parts. Although given enough money, I'd gladly do that to rearrange them into a modern layout with reproduction double shot caps).

When you say "used" I assume you mean "old" because you can always buy a NIB keyboard or one that looks and feels so good, it might as well be new.

I'm at the beginning of my mechanical keyboard journey, but of what I've tried so far:

buckling springs > 67g ergo-clears > clears > browns

I don't think I'd like linear switches, but there are some obvious tactile omissions like blues. The next switch I try will actually be whites.

I hope to eventually, but to be honest after using the stock clears for a couple weeks, the 67g ergo-clears already seem really light. They're light enough that my fingers don't get tired at all, but heavy enough that I mistype significantly less than, e.g. browns.

What differences in feel should I expect with 62g clears?

I felt like I couldn't relax on the 67 so I dropped to 62

I rolled stock clears a while after 62s for some fun-factor, but it really is too tiring for extended sessions.

Generally I don't believe Typing should be a feat of strength..  So I went to 62 ergo blacks which are reds.

Awesome, thanks for your thoughts. It seems like more people go with 62g than 67g, but nubbinator convinced me with his excitement. I'll try 62g eventually.

Bull****. I've got 2 NIB 1990 G80 Terminals which are butter smooth. Smoother than brand new MX Reds and well worn Reds (to the point where filco labels fade away). I actually opened few of those switches and I can confirm they're lubed by factory. It's hard to say if they're smoother than Topre as I'm no longer using Topre on my primary keyboard, but when switching from Topre after one week of using it to those blacks I don't feel the scratchiness you can always feel when switching to Reds or Browns.

I don't know if you had mentioned that yours were NIB here:
http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49636.120

but if not, you should.  We don't really have any other reports from people with NIB keyboards with Blacks.  Most are used, so it becomes difficult to discern whether the smoothness is a result of wear or not.  I still stand by physical differences, because even modern batches of different switches exhibit significant variation in smoothness straight from the factory.  Start with smoother switches + some wear = super smooth.

I wouldn't say physical differences but there could be some difference in plastic which could have changed by removing some environment dangerous components from it over time. The only obvious thing that you can see after opening the switch is that it's definitely lubed with some kind of oil, something you can't see on a new cherries.
Unfortunately I can't reply to the other thread for some reason.

I'm loving the thopre atm. I really want to try 55g topre and 62g ergoclears. My opinion on mx blues: meh.

Ive tried it before :)

55g Topres are too hard and 62g Ergoclears are perfect

So you prefer 45g thopre to 55g?
