YMDK 40% keyboard
« on: Tue, 17 August 2021, 10:50:24 »
I have been looking at 40% keyboards for a good while and have of course considered getting a Planck. But it is rather pricey so I have been wondering about alternatives and was recommended the much cheaper YMD40 v2, which also uses QMK:

https://ymdkey.com/products/ymd40-v2-diy-kit-qmk-type-c-pcb-cnc-case-plate-for-40-mini-cute-mechanical-keyboard-similar-to-planck-layout?variant=32990382915645

But I don't have any experience with YMDK boards. Does anyone know how the quality is? Would it be a similar user experience to a Planck? Anything else to be aware of?

Any thoughts would be very welcome. Thanks!

I have an AMJ40 which uses a different layout but it's very similar to the YMDK40 (AFAIK), and my case is from YMDK. Most of the issues I have with the AMJ are specific to the it's PCB, which wouldn't be an issue with the YMDK40. The case is very solid and well made and I would assume the plate would be as well.

Can't tell about the keyboard. But I almost bought it at some time point.
Although after some research I've found the Koolertron keyboard which is also 48 keys
and has a better layout and form-factor in my opinion and similar price. Just saying.

Thank you for the replies! I'm still considering what to get so I don't have much to add myself at this point.

(and sorry for the late reply, haven't been around much lately)
