[GB] Matias Stabilizer Sets
« on: Sun, 04 October 2015, 19:16:09 »
This is a Group Buy for Sets of Stabilizers produced by Matias.  This is intended to be an Add-on afterthought to the Alps Party 60% GB.  I didn't remember we would need these, and no one reminded me until the main deal was underway.  So if you want stabs, let's get some.

This is going to be super quick.  The ordering phase will close on October 10th.  It needs to be this quick so I can get the timing right with the Alps Party, making only a single order of tons of things from Matias.  Nothing fancy.  No giveaways, no photoshops, only stabs.

So what you are ordering is this:

pic courtesy of JDCarpe

From the description from Matias, this contains:
Quote
Stabilizers:
(Note: Stabilizers are also called Balance Bars)

1 pc for 1 x 7 Alps keycap
1 pc for 1 x 6.25 Alps keycap
1 pc for 1 x 2.75 Alps keycap
6 pcs for 1 x 2 or 1 x 2.25 Alps keycap

Top Hooks:
(These are the parts that connect to the underside of the keycap. You need 2 top hooks per keycap.)

Minimum 14 pcs (usually around 18 pcs) Alps style (grey)
Minimum 4 pcs (usually around 5 pcs) Cherry style (white)

Bottom Hooks:
(These are the parts that connect to the steel plate of the keyboard. You need 2 bottom hooks per keycap.)

Minimum 14 pcs (usually around 18 pcs) Alps style (grey)
Minimum 4 pcs (usually no more than 4 pcs) Cherry style (white)

This set is enough to fill out one board with a Dell or AEK style plate.  Infinity and HHKB plates use the 6u spacebar, so that part will not be compatible without modification.

The cost:
The guys at Matias have given us a pretty good bulk deal.
Quote
Bulk Pricing MOQ (all pricing in U.S. Dollars):
1 pc to 4 pcs - $9.95 each
5 pcs to 9 pcs - $9.50 each
10 pcs to 14 pcs - $9.25 each
15 pcs to 19 pcs - $9.00 each
20 pcs to 29 pcs - $8.50 each
30 pcs to 39 pcs - $8.00 each
40 pcs to 49 pcs - $7.50 each
50 pcs or more - $7.00 each

The price to ship to me from the Matias HQ will be $30-$40 for a 50 unit set, and that price will be spread out among the participants.  So if we order 50 units total, each set will cost the participant ~$7.70 if we average it out.

Is 50 units manageable?  Hell yes.  We hit 50 just doing the IC on geekhack, and the GB available to the members of Deskthority and /r/mk as well.

I grabbed a set, but can we get some clarification on what exactly is included in the set? Do we have to specify how many top hooks/bottom hooks we need to get? It sounds that way but that seems kind of silly to do that for every kit.

In each set you will get at least the minimum number of hooks listed.  You might get lucky and get some bonus ones too though.

Oh that's neat. A little weird, but neat. Sounds like there's more than enough for compatibility with just about every alps keyset.

I bought one of this direct from Matias while Alps Party was still active.

Gonna order another through this GB anyway. Why? Because ALPS IS LOVE, ALPS IS LIFE yo!
The Alps cover 65% of Switzerland's surface area (41,285 km²), making it one of the most alpine countries. Despite the fact that Switzerland covers only 14% of the Alps total area (192,753 km²),[2][3] many alpine four-thousanders (48 of 82) are located in the Swiss Alps and practically all of the remaining few are within 20 km of the country's border.

It should be pretty straightforward just to bend the ends in a bit. It's only the difference between 6.25U and 6U, which means each end only needs to bend in half that amount, which is less than 0.1" per side.

On Geekhack, the answer to the question, "do I need this?" is always the opposite of the answer to the question, "do I already have ten of this?"

For just the stab sets to Sweden, the shipping cost would probably hover around $10.

Tonight has been devoted to buying makeup for Halloween.  I may know more about makeup than my gf, but that doesn't mean it is easy.
