« on: Mon, 30 September 2019, 19:21:36 »
Neuron GB is now closed. Thanks for your support!

Hey Geekhack,

Group-Buy for the Neuron is Closed. The GB was open from October 1st until November 1st, 2019. All valid entries to the GB form received an invoice. Additionally, one (1) RNG-selected order will receive a GOLDEN TICKET! If you are the recipient of this GOLDEN TICKET, your entire order will be refunded. If you're the lucky order, all you have to do is post a picture of your ticket on Reddit, Geekhack, Instagram, etc. and tag me in the post to verify. The expected turnaround is 3 months without unanticipated delays. Prices, pictures, and features can be found below. Thanks for reading!

Prototype Pictures:
227405-0
227407-1
227410-2
227413-3
227415-4

Anodizing Color Renders:
227883-6

Anodizing Sample Pictures:

Above L to R: Drank, Cool Ranch, Space Grey, Gamer Grrl. Bushido Red requires more tweaking, and the picture above in the render is most accurate to what I want to achieve.

Standard Plate Supported Layouts:
227421-8

Features:
  • 2.5 degree polycarbonate or anodized aluminum case. Same price. (No separate top and bottom piece: all one piece.)
  • Top-mount plate available in sandblasted brass, polycarbonate plate, or 3mm acrylic for the same price.
  • 5mm thick sandblasted brass weight with NEURON engraving.
  • QMK-compatible black PCB designed by Worldspawn; on-board atmega with USB-C.
  • Standard plate supports full-size 6.25u space or 2.25u/2.75u split space layouts. No ortho on the standard plate or PCB.
  • By popular request, an optional ortho plate is available for +$40. Compatible with the Niu Mini and Panc40 Anconda PCBs (provide your own). Ortho plate layouts here: https://imgur.com/a/7WwgNnZ
  • No LEDs. No in-switch or RGB. Sorry gamers.
  • Aluminum case weights ~2lbs 7oz built, Polycarbonate version weights ~1 lb 15oz built.

Prices:
  • Full Kit $229.99/ea + tax (if applicable) and shipping. Choice of PC or Aluminum case. Choice of sandblasted brass, polycarbonate, or 3mm acrylic plate. No price difference for material choice.
  • US shipping is $20 flat rate. International shipping will be estimated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Sandblasted brass ortho plates available for $40/ea.
  • Additional plates are $40/ea.
  • Additional PCBs are $30/ea.
  • EVA foam inserts for between PCB and plate for $15/ea. These only fit the staggered plate.

Post-GB Updates:
  • GB Closed at midnight on Nov. 1st. 102 orders with paid invoices. Thanks for all the support!
  • Final PCB assembly and CNC factory quotes requested on Nov 3rd, with payment to follow after final tallies with extras are calculated.
  • Factory paid on Nov 6th, with an earliest shipping estimate of December 30th. This means Neurons should be shipping to customers in January.
  • Confirmed with factory during the last week of November that production is going smoothly, and we should be on track for a late December to early January shipping from the factory, followed by QC and shipping on my end, then boards out to everyone in late January.
  • Shipping notification on PCBs received 12/5/2019. PCBs should be here next week, then QC to follow.
  • PC cases almost done machining, then on to the finishing and the aluminum cases. Still on track from CNC factory.
  • PCBs received 12/9/19, QC underway.
  • 12/18/19: PC cases done machining and on to finishing. Aluminum cases are being anodized. PCBs are working perfectly; will flash all of them with a default layout after the holidays. Acrylic plates and EVA foam inserts are cut and arrived this morning. Everything still on track for a January ship date to customers. Smooth sailing so far.
  • 12/31/19: Polycarbonate cases and plates are completed, but brass weights and plates are still undergoing finishing and machining. Aluminum cases are all machined and undergoing anodizing now.
  • 1/14/20: CNC parts have shipped from the factory! Awaiting receipt in the US, followed by QC and packing.
  • 1/21/20: First of packages received. QC and sorting will continue this week into the weekend, followed by packing and shipping over the next week(s).
  • 1/23/20: All parts counted and sorted, and everything appears here. First pass QC done on parts and they look fantastic. Will start final QC and packing this weekend. Next update will likely be when they ship.
  • 2/6/20: First wave of packages went out today! Will be shipping over the next week at the rate I can double-check and pack the boxes. Domestic orders will go out first, followed by international orders.
  • 2/21/20: Shipping is complete to domestic and international orders! Check your PayPal emails for tracking information. PM me if you run into any issues. Thanks for your support!!!

This is a nice looking board. I love how you've worked the weight and case together to keep it down to one alu piece and still retain the top mount plate. Very cool.

Thanks! That was definitely a design priority for me. I think it helps with sound and makes the polycarb version look better than 2-piece designs.

What's the price of individual cases? I'm seeing the option for PC case + PCB, or Aluminum. I'm guessing that you intended for the first case option to include a PCB regardless of material? Does that mean I can buy another case for it?

The kit price includes 1 case, 1 weight, 1 plate, and 1 pcb. Additional plates, pcbs, ortho plate, and eva foam inserts are available as add-ons, but cases are not available on their own.

Just preference; the acrylic has an intermediate amount of flex compared to the PC, and I prefer that for tactile switches.

Good eye. Yes! All the bottom screws are counterbored, and while I used taller button screws for the prototype in the pictures, the production run screws are flatter M2s. There are also sunk holes for the bumpons in the corners on the production Neuron too, so it sits on a mm or two of rubber cushioning, not on its screw heads.

Yes! I ordered more extras than I anticipate needing for B-stocks (20 boards), and the extras will be sold off. Any B-stocks will be labeled as such. PC and Alu in all colors should be available, barring some act of god or an absurdly high B-stock rate.

Yup, no change in ship date from the factory. PCBs should be here Monday. Working on ways to make QC and packing time as efficient as possible, but yes, late January shipping seems totally reasonable at this time. :D

definitely. i ordered ~20% more Neurons than i needed in case of b-stocks. there should be ~10 PC extras on sale after QC and the GB orders go out, which will be sold on my new site, https://www.walletburner.co. the cases/weights/plates are in town as of yesterday, so they should be delivered tomorrow or tuesday. that means the total turnaround for the GB will be around 3 months on the dot for domestic customers, and a tad longer for international customers depending on the postal service. not bad for a first run.

Yes!
235035-0

Here are half of the orders, QC'd and boxed, ready to go out later this week as domestic orders ship. The quality on this run is superb. A change in my shipping method required ordering some new packing supplies for domestic orders and caused a temporary delay, but I have everything figured out now and I will start sending out boards on a rolling basis this week. Domestic shipments will go out first, followed by international orders. This means the total turnaround for the board should be ~3.5 months or so for US customers and a tad longer for international customers, depending on their postal service/customs.

the first packages went out today! everyone should receive an email with tracking information to their PayPal email addresses the day before their order ships. Domestic orders will go out first in waves, then international orders. Aiming to get everything out to GB participants within a week.

All domestic (US) packages have gone out! I will try to finish all international orders this weekend. Sorry for the delay; it turns out packing 102 packages as one person makes my back spasm, and I can only fit 25 packages in my car at a time. As of today, we are 105 days after the GB, so I think this turnaround is still a resounding success, especially given the quality of machining and anodizing. Expect an email to your PayPal address when your order is packed and ready to ship, international peeps!!!
