I Bought a GTX 980 Founders' Edition For $160
« on: Fri, 14 June 2019, 23:49:03 »
Was this a bad decision?

From what I have seen, I may have over paid slightly given current market prices. I also probably could have bought a 980 TI for $180-200.

I had a GTX 760 for several years, and, because it died, I now have a GTX 660 that I bummed off a friend. So I was tired of having wimpy cards. Most AAA stuff runs pretty decently on the 660, but anything even slightly indie runs like poop unless I turn every single setting down.

I kept telling myself I'd get the top of the line card after a few generations, but the prices kept going up, and I don't think I could ever stomach paying $800+ for a single component. I'm still on an Ivy Bridge CPU anyway, so I'm not sure a new GPU would get fully utilized anyway.

Still waiting for it in the mail, btw.

Nah, it's a decent choice. You're probably right about slightly overpaying for it, but only a little. 980's still a pretty good card in terms of its raw horsepower, but the 4gb vram will start showing its age for newer games (especially when going for hi-res textures is a popular way of getting better looking graphics without much of a performance hit). Still, I think you'd be happy with the increased performance.

I was in the same boat as you (was previously running a ATI 5870; it still works but I'd pretty much given up playing games on it since around 2016). Swapped it out for a cheap rx 580 (previously used by a miner) a couple of months back. Couldn't be happier with how it performs at 1080p vs what I paid.

I think RX 570's are going for less than that new and I'm not 100% but I've heard even RX 580's are going for about those prices in the US.

Of course if it needs to be Nvidia then it's alright. It's not much of an improvement over the GTX 970 at 1080p though and those are probably a fair bit cheaper, dunno your local used gpu market prices.

In terms of performance vs $$,   the 580/ 1060 used are slightly better buys.

the 580/1060  970/980  are very likely miner cards, so you have to know Precisely what model to buy which (Survive) mining.

For example Sapphire 580 and Evga FTW/FTW+ 1060

These models have m0ar VRM chips, which means they will have reliable power delivery as there's much less wear when power is distributed.

OVERALL though, wouldn't recommend any of them. The New ATI cards are coming  out JULY 7th.  You'd at least wait till then to see how the market settles..

You must understand that there's better options from AMD that will perform as good. I think you got ripped off

I wouldn't say ripped off,   But , July 7th , that's pretty close for a possible market shake.

I think of a GTX 980 as just... dated.

Yeah, I didn't even think to check what AMD has. I have never understood AMD's naming conventions for GPUs, so I don't have a frame of reference. I also don't follow computer tech stuff much lately since my interests have shifted, so I didn't know new stuff is coming in July. I was a bit hasty in the purchase because most deals on /r/hardwareswap get spoken for really fast.

Oh well, considering my current card situation, I'll probably be happy with it. I can always get the latest greatest later on. I'll probably need to build a new PC in the next couple years anyway since I built mine in 2013 with 2012 parts.

Nvidia parts have nvidia tax,  and they hold value pretty well .. so at worst, you can flip it for a $10-$20 loss.

You'll be fine.. no one iz gonna die o' nothin'

Ripped off? No.
Was a deal?. No.

You could say it's a better deal if you know it wasn't used for mining, however at the age of these at this point, I would imagine wear and tear is similar to what you would get from a newer mining card.

I think I paid $80 more for 2x 970s. $240 for two SLI'd ones from Amazon Warehouse on Prime Day in 2016 which at the time was a great deal. Still is.

The listing says it was never used for mining. It is a reference card though, so the fan will be crap probably. I'll have to keep an eye on temps.

You can buy replacement fans on Ebay and Amazon. Contrary to popular belief it's actually pretty easy to find them.
