Smashed PS/2 cable
« on: Tue, 06 April 2010, 07:54:15 »
So, the PS/2 cable on my G84-4100 got smashed in my suitcase while on vacation. I've tried bending the metal back into shape, but it's no use. The connector is futzed.

So is there any way to fix this? Say, cut off the connector, take a connector from another keyboard, braid, solder, electric tape them together?

Well, you've answered your own question...but it's probably easier/cleaner looking to just take the whole cord off another keyboard so the uglies of the repair are hidden inside the case (assuming that keyboard has the space inside to accomodate said uglies of the repair).

Hm... Do you think I could just take the whole cord off the controller PCB of another keyboard?

It'd have to have the same connector on the PCB and that same connector would need to have the same pinout unless you know how to rearrange pins in the connector.

Guidelines:
-Never trust colour codes.
-Do not connect it and hope for the best.
-Always check pinouts with a multimeter or equivalent.

Find 2 PS/2 extension leads. Cut the male connector off one and attach it to the keyboard with only an inch or so of the original cable. Voila, quick release connection.

Fixed, I think. Managed to bend it into shape using some pliers. I've tried it with my Socket A file server and am using it through a USB adapter on my main PC. I'll try it straight to the motherboard next time I reboot.

Thanks for the tips, all. ;)
